Has improved incident response with better root cause visibility and supports flexible on-call scheduling
Datadog needs to introduce more hard limits to cost. If we see a huge log spike, administrators should have more control over what happens to save costs. If a service starts logging extensively, I want the ability to automatically direct that log into the cheapest log bucket. This should be the case with many offerings. If we're seeing too much APM, we need to be aware of it and able to stop it rather than having administrators reach out to specific teams. Datadog has become significantly slower over the last year. They could improve performance at the risk of slowing down feature work. More resources need to go into Fleet Automation because we face many problems with things such as the Ansible role to install Datadog in non-containerized hosts. We mainly want to see performance improvements, less time spent looking at costs, the ability to trust that costs will stay reasonable, and an easier way to manage our agents. It is such a powerful tool with much potential on the horizon, but cost control, performance, and agent management need improvement. The main issues are with the administrative side rather than the actual application.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I really enjoy the RUM monitoring features of Datadog. It allows us to monitor user behavior in a way we couldn't before."
"It has scaled great. I haven't run into any problems anywhere that I've used it. They have handled everything that we have needed them to."
"We've been able to glean from the monitors what servers are down, and can alert the team in Slack."
"Datadog has positively impacted my organization by shortening our time to resolve incidents because it's a central place for getting all the data that we need for troubleshooting."
"Dashboards and their versatility are among the most valuable features."
"The many dozens of integrations that the solution brings out of the box are excellent."
"The greatest impact it has had is on the ability to democratize observability and put monitoring into the hands of the people."
"I have found error reporting and log centralization the most valuable features. Overall, Datadog provides a full package solution."
"The product has the best firewall features."

Cons

"Support via tickets is absolutely terrible. It's the one obvious bad spot for Datadog."
"Deploying the agents is still very manual."
"While the tool is robust with many different capabilities, users would greatly benefit from more examples in the documentation."
"We need more advanced querying against logs."
"I found the documentation can sometimes be confusing."
"It is very difficult to make the solutions fit perfectly for large organizations, especially in terms of high cardinality objects and multi-tenancy, where the data needs to be rolled up to a summarized level while maintaining its individual data granularity and identifiers."
"I would like to see the integration between PagerDuty and Datadog improved. The tags in Datadog don't match those in PagerDuty, and we have to make it work."
"We primarily use the log management functionality, and the only feedback I have there is better fuzzy text searching in logs (the kind that Kibana has)."
"The product is not suitable for small businesses. Its price needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Licensing is based on the retention period of logs and metrics."
"The price of Datadog is reasonable. Other solutions are more expensive, such as AppDynamics."
"This solution is budget friendly."
"The price is better than some competing products."
"The tool is open-source."
"Pricing and licensing are reasonable for what they give you. You get the first five hosts free, which is fun to play around with. Then it's about four dollars a month per host, which is very affordable for what you get out of it. We have a lot of hosts that we put a lot of custom metrics into, and every host gives you an allowance for the number of custom metrics."
"While it is an expensive product, I would rate the pricing level at four out of five."
"At my last company, we did see ROI, specifically around response time. We could get to mission critical things that were down and losing revenue on immediately. So, the product paid itself back."
"WatchTower Security Management App is an expensive product."
