Streamlined Data engineering and built-in lineages
The best features of dbt include lineage and Jinja templating languages that make it easy for creating pipelines. The built-in lineage feature provides a good understanding of the several layers where data is being loaded in dbt, allowing visibility from different layers into the end product. dbt has positively impacted version controlling as it has different version control steps involved. The specific improvements seen with version control in dbt are that it has helped trace the data lineage, enabled faster trace and rollbacks, and enabled safe collaboration at every scale, which has improved data quality. A return on investment has been seen from using dbt as the time has reduced while utilizing dbt in the form of data pipelines and ETL scripting. There is operational efficiency achieved, and data quality and governance have also been achieved with modular SQL and version controlling, which reduced duplication of data and data errors.

Has supported complex data pipeline creation but performance tuning and monitoring responsiveness need improvement
Sometimes, I see various performance issues with Informatica PowerCenter, including caching concerns, whether it's a joiner transformation or other transformations, so I believe the team can enhance the performance perspectives of these transformations. Additionally, sometimes the Informatica Monitor hangs or takes time to open the current run or logs, which the team can also look into. Informatica is transitioning to cloud solutions and discontinuing on-premise support after 2026, so when we discuss Informatica Cloud and its support, it becomes quite expensive for the organization compared to peers such as SnapLogic or Netezza, which offer lower pricing. Informatica Cloud Intelligence's pricing is notably high.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"dbt has positively impacted my organization by allowing us to create our data pipelines much faster, going from ingestion of data to creating a data product in weeks instead of months, and we can do it in-house with the skillset we already have."
"There is operational efficiency achieved, and data quality and governance have also been achieved with modular SQL and version controlling, which reduced duplication of data and data errors."
"The product is developer-friendly."
"Since we migrated from SSIS to dbt model architecture, it takes around four hours only to complete a full refresh, and the client is now happy because our downtime was drastically reduced when we perform a complete refresh of the data."
"Technical support is great. It's one of the reasons we really like them. When you compare support from IBM and support from Informatica, Informatica is much better."
"The features I find most valuable is that the solution is very user-friendly and the graphical design is very easy to understand."
"The technical support is excellent."
"The setup is very simple."
"Among all the solutions I have used, I found Informatica PowerCenter to be much more stable in terms of application."
"The setup is straightforward."
"The most valuable features are the metadata repository and the data warehouse application console."
"Once you have learned Informatica, it is very easy to use."

Cons

"Since dbt has a license cost, if a company is small and does not have much budget, they can explore other tools because there are other tools that provide the same functionality at a lower cost."
"dbt can be improved as I find the co-pilot in dbt is not very good, and my team has tried using it but opted to move off it and use other co-pilots such as GitHub."
"The solution must add more Python-based implementations."
"Dbt is not as stable as preferred, as it has had a few outages in the current year itself, so improvement should be made in the outages section as it is not stable."
"I would like to see it be able to import data from NoSQL."
"The solution must improve the integration with new services."
"If we could have the option of performance improvement within Informatica, and if it could have more features, that would be ideal."
"There can be scalability issues. Huge amounts of data ingestion will impact performance."
"We need another tool for monitoring. It would be easier if all the features were consolidated into one tool."
"Informatica are very rigid when it comes to cloud migrations which discourages customers in moving their solution to the cloud."
"The real-time database connectivity when getting the real-time data using the VPN is an area that needs improvement."
"The initial setup is not straightforward. You need expertise to do it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution’s pricing is affordable."
"Pricing for Informatica PowerCenter isn't cheap, but if I compare it with IBM, it's as expensive as IBM, however, Informatica PowerCenter is more innovative, especially when compared to a giant company such as IBM that has thousands of products. Informatica PowerCenter is limited only to data management, but it has new features that come out every quarter. Points for ease of use and flexibility go to Informatica PowerCenter, but price-wise, IBM and Informatica are equal because they're both expensive."
"I consider this to be an expensive product."
"Our client has purchased the license, and we are using it."
"According to what I've heard and read on various blogs, it's quite expensive when compared to similar competitive products."
"Its licensing is expensive in terms of scaling."
"The price is mostly reasonable."
"A basic setup can be from $100,000 and up annually."
"I rate the solution's pricing a four out of ten. The price is very high, and it doesn't understand the market now."
