Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Fast data recovery for large scale datasets
The Infiniguard (dedicated disc storage), offers a petabyte of storage space for on-site disc storage for backups. Because of this, we were able to get rid of our tapes. Essentially, it replaced our tape backups. We're definitely going to be buying another INFINIDAT array. We do have another location that is going to be needing a new array sometime soon, so we'll be buying another one. The beautiful thing about them is that you can set them up to replicate for disaster recovery between the two of them and set up some nice replication jobs, site to site, for automatic database replication.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features."
"Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable; we're doing more than 3,000 VMs, and every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours."
"Its stability and deduplication capabilities are most valuable."
"The installation process is pretty straightforward."
"The solution is always coming up with new features year over year, consistently updating their offering to continuously offer better and broader functionality in their product."
"The solution is very stable."
"In general, when you look at the spec sheet for Dell EMC Avamar, it's a very good product."
"We have a lot of backups, and this tool helps us with the RMAN Backup."
"Overall, this solution has been very cost-effective for us."
"Essentially, it replaced our tape backups."

Cons

"In my opinion, the user interface and the user friendliness could be improved. The specific thing I have in mind are the graphics, which are not quite user-friendly."
"Avamar is a good product with a lot of potential, but if Dell isn't willing to put more effort into developing it, my advice would be to look elsewhere."
"The UI is quite old. We've been using this UI since last year, and they haven't changed it. It would be better to update the UI periodically and create attractive dashboards from an administrative point of view."
"The only concern is the cost."
"The product could be easier to troubleshoot. When I had a problem with the software, I invested a lot of time to find out what the problem was."
"Avamar needs a greater emphasis on storage targets. If it's going to keep pace with the times, it needs more ability to leverage cloud storage."
"The stability could improve, a lot of scheduled backups failed at one time."
"The configuration and expansion aspects of the solution need improvement. They're complicated and don't really integrate well."
"I would like to see more improvement in the GUI; for example, better graphs and statistics so that you have a better vision of what exactly you have stored."
"I would like to see more improvement in the GUI."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There are licensing costs for Dell EMC Avamar and it is paid annually."
"When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
"It's an expensive tool"
"Dell's pricing structure is not overly expensive."
"It is expensive. The maintenance comes with it for five years. So, you buy the whole thing for five years, and your maintenance is included with it, but it's a big chunk of change upfront. We like capital expenses because we can CapEx them. We pay once every five years, so we spend a big chunk of change. You'd have to divide that out by the five years to come up with how much it costs. It's just about three-quarters of a million dollars for five years."
"Dell EMC needs to lower Avamar's price and add more features to stay competitive."
"Regarding pricing, I would say Avamar is slightly expensive compared to its functionalities. It's not high-priced or low-priced but somewhere in between."
"It is easy to use."
