Flexibility and reliability have supported seamless data growth
I cannot think of anything to improve about Dell PowerScale (Isilon). The hardest challenge we have is due to how we've bought things over time. The way that we moved to the PowerEdge platform for the newer systems creates a scale problem as I still buy the older style systems, which are more dense storage. They're different chassis, so the problem we run into in the data center is the depth of the actual equipment. The newer equipment, if we buy an FX910 or a 900, it's a lot shorter in scale than if I buy an 83,000, which is much bigger. This makes it more complicated for deployment.

They can make more solutions for cloud integration in NetApp Private Storage. It should be easier to use the cloud S3 integration, maybe from a NetApp interface, where users can choose the type of storage before sending to S3. I would like to see more audit and performance logs via cloud integrations and ONTAP. Without the need for separate software.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution allows me to use SSMDS to store data for end users and share it within different locations."
"Dell PowerScale (Isilon) actually combined a shared file system that scales seamlessly and works effectively, making the blocking and tackling exactly what was advertised."
"My experience when deploying Dell PowerScale (Isilon) was very straightforward, as we had Dell come on site to do all the actual setup, which was a big help."
"The reliability and stability of Dell PowerScale (Isilon) is good, with no downtime."
"The solution has simplified management by consolidating our workloads. Rather than managing all the different workloads on different storage arrays, Windows Servers, etc., we just have one place per data centre where we manage all their unstructured data, saving us time."
"Dell PowerScale (Isilon) stability is solid as a rock."
"PowerScale helps our clients consolidate data storage and multiple applications onto a single platform for easier manageability."
"It's easy to manage. The web UI is very intuitive, and there's CLI also that you can use to manage it."
"Integration with other NetApp solutions and merging them is manageable."
"It gave us a platform which could clearly arrange all our files and volumes."
"The most valuable feature of NetApp Private Storage is out-of-the-box integration with the SAN switches; they are much easier compared to Dell solutions, and the connector that comes with the solution that allows connection back to the Cisco SAN switches is very good."
"NetApp has its own dedicated operating system, so it will not be affected by any wireless piggybacking or malware. That's the beauty of NetApp's operating system."
"NetApp has really added a lot of features over the years to improve the product and performance. They can do things now like control ingress. They can control egress."
"NetApp has its own dedicated operating system, so it will not be affected by any wireless piggybacking or malware."
"NetApp is faster than other storage brands."
"When it came time to replace, we evaluated EMC, NetApp, IBM again and chose NetApp and have not regretted it."

Cons

"Data storage performance needs to be improved."
"The cost of Dell PowerScale is currently high and there is room for improvement."
"It would be nice to see tools like Superna Eyeglass built into PowerScale."
"The portal is really complicated to figure out features and functions, and it could be easier to navigate."
"The solution isn't suitable for small environments or small customers."
"Technical support could be improved. Whenever we have a hiccup, we'd like to get it fixed maybe quicker."
"The UID mapping and how to configure mapping-related things is a struggle."
"The management and monitoring tools comprise a disparate suite of products and the roadmap is very unclear."
"They need a little more technical people in Akola. Most of the NetApp people are in Bangalore, Mumbai, or Delhi, but there are very few in Akola. I think NetApp has few technicians in Akola because they mostly rely on partners to service this area."
"If you overthink provisioning, if you over-allocate, if it gets full, or if something crazy happens and you haven't been watching, then you can lose data."
"It is not the fastest storage solution."
"They can make more solutions for cloud integration in NetApp Private Storage. It should be easier to use the cloud S3 integration, maybe from a NetApp interface, where users can choose the type of storage before sending to S3."
"I would like to see the GUI management simplified in the next release."
"The users find the new version's GUI complicated to use."
"I'm not sure how easy it is to use on the cloud versus on-prem. If they have different user experiences, they should work to make the two as similar as possible to make it easy for a user to understand both even if they only deal mainly with one."
"They need a little more technical people in Akola."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The platform is not cheap. However, on the software side, you can choose what you want license. So, you can start your licensing with the features that you need, then after buying the platform add some other features."
"Price was also a significant factor in our decision to go with PowerScale. The team at EMC, now Dell EMC, came through with a highly competitive offer that tipped the scales towards their solution. There was only one other solution around the same price point, but it could not match PowerScale on features. That other solution is no longer on the market."
"Dell PowerScale (Isilon) is an expensive solution."
"We paid an additional fee to have Dell's ProDeploy Plus team implement it."
"It is an expensive solution."
"Dell PowerScale is an expensive solution compared to other products like Qumulo."
"Dell PowerScale is expensive on the start-up side but we can recoup those costs quickly by not having to reapply the savings to other equipment."
"The general cost for a system like this is expensive. The total cost depends on your use case. You need to pay for every additional feature that you use."
"The price could be lower."
"In general, I am pleased with the pricing, though it is a little high."
"The price of NetApp Private Storage is similar to other solutions. There is typically an annual license required for this solution."
"The product is costly."
"It is an expensive solution."
"NetApp Private Storage is cheaper here in India compared to other solutions, such as Dell."
"We negotiate whatever deal we can get on the type of storage that it is, but it's totally under our control,."
