Monitoring has become centralized and management now sees real‑time health of key network assets
The time investment required is significant, not because of difficulty but because of the need for free time to invest in it. We need to get the knowledge. We know there are many options, but we took an external vendor to install and make the customization. If we want to make others changes without paying for customization, we need to learn it deeply by ourselves. The tutorials are very complicated. They could work on that area. The tutorial part could be more simplified. I know there are many explanations, and you can get help or documents in one click on the current page in the product, but it is not very clear. If you want to do something new that you did not see from the vendor in the installation, it is not very simple. The documents are good for people that know how to operate the product well, but for new users, it is not simple.

A small, convenient tool that is very stable, but needs to have a longer battery life
They could make it easier to set up originally, because the initial setup can be quite hit and miss. It is also quite battery intensive, so it might last a bit longer if it had a lithium battery. You're always having to replace the batteries, so it would be good if it could be USB-charged or something like that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Thanks to Spectrum, we are able to monitor (and send out alarms for) our whole IT infrastructure 7/24 without having more than a minimal number of technical persons."
"This is a very good, refined product that, in the fault-tolerant configuration, approaches being bulletproof."
"Definitely consider Spectrum."
"The most valuable features of DX Spectrum are the comprehensive alerts."
"It is very stable. We have not had any major issues in over 10 years."
"The network mapping functionality."
"The capability of handling and monitoring with SNMP and working with the SNMP traps is much better than other products."
"The valuable features of this tool are its scalability and ability to automate inputs and outputs of a closed system."
"The tool fits in your pocket, so it's easy to carry and you don't have to have a big bag of tools."
"The solution provides switch port and VLAN information."
"Less downtime, quick results and fast repairs saves money and keeps our users happy - This tool helps us do that and more!"

Cons

"From the users perspective the looks and feel of dashboards of Spectrum would be easier to use and for understanding as APM will be in 10.5 version which we saw in CA World."
"I would say integration between performance monitoring and CA Spectrum, as well as improved graphing capabilities."
"Integration with some other tools, and integration with some Network Packet Broker, need some improvement."
"Code is very complex."
"Event correlation only works on one server, rather than on all of the servers in the same cluster environment."
"We have had some issues with the spec server and the high availability replication of data. It fails over well, but it does not come back very well. We get duplicated events."
"I think the interface needs a bit of a revamp. They need to adapt it to the new app world that it is now ruling (iOS, Android Apps), and it needs to offer more."
"From a functionality perspective, the product is not doing what it should. Also, there are some concerns about the accessibility. I would appreciate additional out-of-the-box troubleshooting scripts, like templates for addressing various issues. Currently, when troubleshooting online, I need to create my scripts. It would be beneficial if the platform could provide pre-built scripts or templates to help automate certain troubleshooting tasks."
"The solution should improve cable testing."
"They could make it easier to set up originally, because the initial setup can be quite hit and miss."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"DX Spectrum's pricing depends on the license number. It is affordable."
"DX Spectrum's pricing is neither expensive nor cheap."
"Spectrum is expensive."
"It is very pricey. With the current trend of enterprises moving towards cheaper and more modern looking solutions like ManageEngine, SevOne, ServicePilot, and Paesller."
"The solution's pricing could be better."
"The price is very high."
"The product, support, and maintenance are all expensive, which is another reason that we are switching to another solution."
"The cost of some of these products are a little cost prohibitive, which is unfortunate. We have to find lower cost solutions for some of the things that we have to pull in. For the most part, CA has capabilities in pretty much everything that you would need. You just have to figure out where are you going to spend the most money for what you have to actually get done. You can do all these things but, which ones do you have to do? And that's hard to choose sometimes because you want to do them all."
"The product is a little bit overpriced."
"You pay for the device, but you don't have to pay for the app."
