AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have identified and solved "mystery" issues that we have experienced for a long time, including sporadic latency issues on storage volumes and SQL databases not scaling properly when under certain loads."
"Since we moved to OneAgent, we are much quicker to address live incidents and problems that occur in our systems."
"It is really comfortable and easy to use for application monitoring, and we are able to see and go deep into the problem."
"The visibility that it provides through the application's behavior allows us to find trends based on our customized metrics."
"Real time monitoring helps reduce downtime and saves a lot of time in determining what is the likely cause of an issue an end user may be experiencing."
"Dynatrace is stable."
"We display it on a big dashboard, allowing the teams to look at performance for each app within a group, creating a bit of competition while allowing us to see issues sooner rather than later and quickly identify correlated issues across our integrated systems and shared infrastructure."
"Dynatrace makes it so much easier to proactively solve problems before they become big headaches, and easily pinpoint the root cause of an issue."
"The dashboard is a valuable feature."

Cons

"The one thing I do not like about Dynatrace is that their web dashboards are very very slow. They seriously have to improve their web dashboard configuration and SSL timeouts."
"The integration between the web monitoring of Dynatrace and OneAgent. "
"Pricing and the license model could be improved."
"Make sure older frameworks, like PHP 5.3, are supported."
"I don't much like the Java Management Extension. I would rather do administration tasks in a web GUI."
"The one thing I am really missing is the final Azure dashboard."
"The heavy client is not really user-friendly and the concepts (while powerful) are unintuitive."
"Dashboards are too clumsy, so it is good to keep less on dashboards and be easier to find the sections."
"The solution is pricy and has room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Dynatrace is usually paid on a yearly basis."
"You get a really well-planned out monitoring suite for the money spent."
"They could improve their price ranges, as there is no option for startups or testing."
"The pricing is a bit on the higher end."
"The licensing for Dynatrace is high. If you want to go for monitoring solutions, then why Dynatrace? If you have a particular budget, you can go for many other monitoring tools - apart from Dynatrace - and they can help you more and give more data than Dynatrace can. It's not worth the money that you spend for Dynatrace."
"There are additional Professional Services costs which ensure the solution is configured with meaningful names so you're getting the most money for your investment."
"We found a tool that can be utilized by testing, DevOps, marketing, software engineering, and monitoring. Before, we always had everybody doing their own thing. Now, everybody's utilizing one tool, which is huge. That is a huge savings."
"There is time savings. People's times have been cut in half using this solution because we were previously doing a lot of that manual work. Now, it's a lot more automated, and the data is just there."
