An open-source database to hold customer data, but its performance should be improved
Firebird SQL significantly improved our data management in many parts of our self-developed ERP system. I rate the solution's performance and speed a six out of ten. Two or three database administrators are needed to maintain the solution. A few years ago, migrating data to or from Firebird SQL was a little bit difficult because the identifier names for tables or stored procedures were limited to 20 to 30 characters. Transferring the structure to Firebird SQL was difficult, but they fixed it in version 3, which was much easier. We are developing software with Delphi, and Delphi is also by Embarcadero. Using InterBase or Firebird SQL databases is very common, and you have some good tools for developing with Firebird SQL. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

While MongoDB is a good product, it is also an expensive product for support, and its scalability is acceptable, but the big problem with MongoDB is the cost. For security in MongoDB, we work with encrypted databases by default, but we have not contracted the security options in our contract because it is too expensive, so we only implement encrypted databases without the security pack, which is very expensive for us; in security, we are at the first steps, just using encrypted databases. I think additional features needed in MongoDB include perhaps vector databases, as I think they are not supported right now.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Firebird SQL is an open-source solution."
"Robustness is the absolutely main feature."
"The most valuable feature of Firebird SQL is the creation of databases."
"I like that we don't have to pay external fees to migrate this data. So, we are looking to relocate from Postgres or EDB."
"Firebird SQL is an open-source solution and can run on most operating systems, such as Linux, Unix, and Windows."
"I appreciate the fact that, once the database is embedded, it doesn't need to be administered, and removes the requirement for a specific server."
"It helps us in detecting all kinds of problems in the code, such as bad quality, unclear code, or any violation in the code or best practices."
"The documentation is very well written."
"MongoDB's dashboards offer more functionalities and allow you to create a dashboard with MongoDB database data."
"MongoDB is a NoSQL tool that gives us much freedom to manipulate how the data works."
"MongoDB is simpler to learn and implement than traditional SQL solutions like MySQL."
"The solution's most important aspect is its seamless database."
"MongoDB's best features are scalability, document management, and data security."
"The most valuable feature of MongoDB is the predefined functions available when using Node.js. These functions simplify the query process, making it user-friendly and straightforward."
"It stores historical data with ease. For example, if you are a healthcare member, then you will have multiple records of visits to the doctors. To store such data in Oracle Database, you have to create many records. You might also have duplication problems because your records are going in again and again, because of which the data warehouse and the maintenance cost will be huge. MongoDB is comparatively lightweight. It is a JSON extract. Once you define a schema and extract it, you can push all the relationships in any way you want. It is easier to define and get different types of transactions into MongoDB. It is also easier to set it up as compared to other solutions. MongoDB is a NoSQL database, which means it is a document DB in which you can store documents that you created in BSON. It is pretty fast in response. It is faster than relational databases because it does not define any primary keys, secondary keys, tertiary keys, and all those kinds of things."
"MongoDB has a simple data-loading interface."

Cons

"The security of the users could improve in Firebird SQL."
"This solution isn't very user-friendly, or intuitive, which could be improved when it is developed."
"The solution could improve by providing partitioning and encryption. It is not at the higher level of database solution but it could be with some upgrades."
"It is not easy to integrate the tool with Visual Studio."
"It would be nice to have a graphical user interface to handle the product."
"Firebird SQL's performance has slowed since Firebird SQL 3 or 3.5 versions, where they developed over-the-wire encryption."
"I don't think the solution is very scalable, because the scalability of the performance when using more than one process is not very good."
"Database sharing is a capability that Firebird SQL lacks."
"MongoDB would be improved with more integration, particularly for cloud environments like Google BigQuery."
"I think that MongoDB's search engine should be improved."
"MongoDB should support TypeScript."
"MongoDB is a very useful and convenient choice, but sometimes for more complex projects, there are certain niche requirements that appear, so using a different tool could be beneficial. It raises the complexity of the architecture, but it could be beneficial to the world, the features, the ease of the features which are being implemented."
"MongoDB should incorporate more features, particularly search functionality, and real-time communication capabilities, to improve the database and provide data listening services. Currently, we rely on the Atlas offering, but it would be fantastic if MongoDB could develop a new solution or updated version that includes these features within its internal database and driver. However, I am uncertain if this would be a viable or profitable move for them, and I am speaking from a mobile-centric viewpoint."
"Its security features can be better. Sometimes, my higher authority says that we are not going to use MongoDB because it doesn't provide that much security for the RDBMS or relational data that we use for transactions. Instead of MongoDB, we will use Oracle Database because for a transactional service, you have to rely on RDBMS ACID properties. I would love to work on MongoDB by using my mobile phone. When I am working remotely or traveling and have some instances deployed on my server, I should be able to check through my mobile whether all the data is being pulled. GitHub has a similar feature, where it lets you read from the laptop, and you can also pull and push with your mobile phone. I would request MongoDB to provide such a feature. Basically, I want a mobile version for both iOS and Android versions."
"They could improve the UI and the analytics part."
"I rate the support from MongoDB a four out of five."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's open-source and free."
"It is okay."
"There is a yearly maintenance fee for the use of the solution."
"The tool is open source."
"We are using the free solution, so there is no cost involved."
"There is no licensing cost for this solution, as it is open-source."
"It is a public domain system as every customer can install it on their system without paying any license fee."
"I was using the free version of Firebird SQL."
"MongoDB is a free solution. We wanted to have high availability and the subscription cost was quite expensive because the basic one is free and then when you want to have some other replications or other features you will need to pay money. Overall the solution is expensive."
"I only used the open-source version."
"There is an enterprise license and it could be cheaper. We are using the free open source version."
"MongoDB's pricing is reasonable."
"It is rather expensive."
"I chose MongoDB because it is cost-effective compared to Oracle, which can be expensive. In addition, MongoDB has good performance and has not caused any issues while working with it. It has been a good choice for me."
"I don't know, but I have heard from people who procure it that it is much cheaper than Oracle."
"MongoDB is not expensive."
