Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Centrally-managed and stable, but the initial setup could be made simpler and technical support can be improved
There is a different platform and there are different interfaces for different parts of the product. Although there are some centralized components, you still manage each component using its own set of tools. There is definitely room for improvement in this regard. I would like to have a catalogue like menu where you simply define your end computing needs and the rest would be taken care of internally. The initial setup could be unified to make it simpler.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is easy to deploy, works well, the reps are good, and the support is great."
"This solution has definitely simplified our infrastructure from edge to core to cloud."
"Prior to FlexPod, we only had a physical environment; from a physical environment, we were able to work into the FlexPod where we leverage all the virtualizations, and it provides us with a lot of agility, on-demand or through orchestrations, as we deliver hundreds of servers."
"For FlexPod, it is always trustworthy."
"FlexPod simplifies our deployments and the automation and enables us to handle mission-critical workloads and applications."
"Each component is best of breed, and better than the competition"
"For our DR, we rely heavily on SnapMirror technologies to accomplish our disaster recovery in VMware SRM."
"Literally, it's been in our situation pretty flawless."
"We used to have different departments, each with their own IT section, everybody was making their own IT investments and running different applications and tools in a multi-vendor environment, and now it is all coordinated and synchronized in one solution, reducing the risk of equipment and costs as well."
"We have seen measurable increases in our system performance. Those increases have been directly measurable in application performance and the delivery of critical business information to our users."
"This solution has rock-solid reliability."
"The component integration means I don't have to worry about technology mismatches."
"The most valuable feature is that it is centrally managed, as it is quite easy for our customers to manage everything, end-to-end."
"Legacy built architecture disappeared with VCE converged infrastructure, as only one person with transversal knowledge can achieve the Logical Configuration Survey, resulting in a strong and powerful infrastructure with nearly no downtime, and this is well known by the VCE technical support."
"Many times I personally felt that while this is a good product to implement in any environment, the one key factor is knowing the environment that this is going to go, know the purpose it is going to serve, and plan ahead a minimum of two years ahead what you might see are areas that might need extra upgrading."
"It's been very reliable, the support is very good, and it fit our needs very well, but our needs are constantly changing."

Cons

"Hardware stability needs improvement. We replaced a lot of RAM this past year."
"I think it could be a little bit more flexible and if they found a way to implement more of a supported cloud solution to it, I think that could help a lot."
"As the industry as a whole is moving more toward the simplification of IT, that is something where both Cisco and NetApp could look to improve further. Just simplifying the day to day management, the day to day issues that arise, and building more intuitiveness into the interfaces would help."
"One touch upgrades would be nice."
"I would like them to scale more to rack unit servers instead of blade servers."
"It is overkill for our environment."
"I would be interested to see more integration with other applications."
"The biggest problem we have seen is, we were using the vStorage which comes with the NetApp environment, a kind of fiber connect. We were missing fibre channel connectivity and we got lots of I/O errors."
"I'm not so excited with Vblock solution."
"Paid support is expensive so the cost of operation could be lowered."
"RCM upgrades are painful."
"I would like to see them improve their switching infrastructure and rely on Cisco configurations. They are a bit more complex and technical, but result in a slightly reduced cost in terms of switching on the network side of it."
"The only thing I would like to see is that although they strongly advocate that you cannot change any of its parts, and that would undermine its performance, but a little allowance should be allowed for disassembly within certain areas, which would be nice."
"The user control could be more advanced. They should work to improve this in future releases."
"Troublesome relationships with VCE at the beginning of our use came undone quickly after we went live."
"It's pretty good, but not great."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I have saved time on new service deployments. I've done deployments in under a week, and if it's a cloud-based deployment, it's even faster."
"As a startup, for the amount of budget we have and the amount we spend, we are getting what we expected."
"It is not going to save you money, but that is not the point. The opportunity to stay competitive in the marketplace is not a cost."
"The scalability is very expensive."
"We have saved time with Snapshots, SnapMirrors, and backup and DR capabilities versus other platforms that we have looked at in the past."
"The investment has been great. We put our money into it and it has given us something that we have been able to rely on for years."
"As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
"We would like everything in one piece of hardware. This way we can just sell the product like a silo by putting everything in a stack together."
"Strive for a consolidated ELA."
"Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
"The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
"I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
"Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
"Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."
"I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
"It is not cheap."
