Centralized monitoring has simplified multi-database oversight and improved query analysis
Foglight for Databases is very useful; however, the negative side we face is that customer care support is not frequent. If any issues related to Foglight arise, we cannot reach customer care support as soon as possible. It takes much longer compared to other third-party tools, and that is a major issue we are facing with Foglight for Databases. Foglight for Databases is good for monitoring, and we can fetch problematic issues and queries. However, the only main drawback is the customer care support. It is available only during the general shift, so if any issue occurs after 6:00 p.m. or before 9:00 a.m., there is usually no one to handle it. I think there are only two or three people handling customer care for Foglight for Databases.

Facilitating real-time business insights with enhanced data querying
Coherence is beneficial due to its multi-indexing to the same object and filtering based on data attributes within the object, followed by aggregation. These features facilitate querying data with multiple keys rather than just a single key. Its real-time data processing capabilities provide insights for business decisions with up-to-date information.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"My impressions of Foglight for Databases' ability to help me monitor a variety of aspects such as the OS, hybrid clouds, hardware, and databases across different platforms have been great so far."
"Foglight offers a lot of out-of-the-box, database-related metrics, which the DB teams here are looking for."
"The real-time activity screens are also helpful... if there is something that is running slowly, we can eliminate the database as being an issue and perhaps look at the server, network activity, or something outside of the realm of the database as being the issue."
"The ability to monitor multiple database platforms streamlines our database operations. The single pane of glass is what we were really after when we picked Foglight. We knew we wanted something that could monitor cross-platform because it does save a lot of time to use the same tool. The one thing that I like with Foglight is that we don't have to install anything locally, like agents, directly on the database servers. That was also a big seller because it simplifies things."
"If you used to work without it, once you've used it, I'm not sure you'd want to do your job without it anymore."
"Foglight for Databases provides real-time data that is invaluable for analyzing ongoing issues with database servers."
"The PI module allows [my colleague] to identify which new indexes or modified indexes are going to make the biggest impact."
"I do not find anything I dislike about Foglight for Databases."
"It has allowed us to greatly improve our response times in several services by caching part of the database into Coherence and executing complex queries using EntryProcessors."
"Portable object format (POF serialization) allows objects to be serialized and deserialized between Java and .NET so the two platforms can exchange data seamlessly."
"A single logical cache scattered across various geographies ensured we had only one cache to look against (location transparency) at the same time, ensuring high availability."
"I have used Oracle Coherence for more than 10 years, from version 3.5 through 12.1.2.1."
"Oracle Coherence is a very good product which helps to create internet-scale applications using a high-performance grid."
"Introducing a data grid, we moved from a vertically scalable solution to full scalability."
"A robust standalone caching solution that prioritized speed of data serialization and data integrity was a must, and Coherence delivered on that front."
"Technical support from Oracle is okay."

Cons

"The version that I'm using is not the latest version, so there might have been some improvement, but the OS monitoring is a bit lacking, and the high-availability option is a bit complicated to set up and it doesn't work all the time."
"Quest must release a Spanish version. That's critical because not everyone speaks English in Latin America. It's an excellent product, so it's super important that they offer the application and customer service in Spanish."
"The tool could be somewhat more user-friendly, as proper knowledge is required to set up servers and use it effectively."
"Over this past weekend I had 400 emails from Foglight. That's a lot. And at least 395 of them were white noise."
"One thing that I would like, and it's probably something that I could set up internally, is something other than a dashboard which I have to look at to know that a server is down. I'd like bells and whistles to go off... If I look at the dashboard I know there's a server down. But if I'm not looking at it, if I'm looking at some other problem, I want to know about it. You can do that, you can use SMSs and alerts to your phone, and I could set it up to handle that, but it would be nice if, out-of-the-box, Foglight did that."
"It would be amazing if they could enable the "Performance Investigator" functionality across all database platforms."
"The system is not that stable. We have been facing a lot of issues. We built a new store environment of Foglight, an environment for monitoring the Lowe's store servers, which are all Db2 servers. The objective is to monitor 800 Db2 servers in each Foglight instance. Up to 150 Db2 servers, the environment was working fine. The moment it crossed 150 or 160, we started having a lot of stability issues."
"The system is not that stable; we started having a lot of stability issues once the environment crossed 150 or 160 Db2 servers, with the Agent Manager restarting every five minutes and generating a lot of alerts."
"This platform has issues with stability and performance."
"Monitoring API needs to be improved and needs to be user friendly. Also, the error and exception handling is not that great as it can be difficult to debug issues."
"Cluster management tools that are independent of WebLogic. Dynamic cluster config rollout and rollback."
"It is very expensive. It might not work well for small business people."
"Price is very high - as for any Oracle product."
"The product is the best, but it's absurdly expensive because licensing is according to the number of CPUs."
"Initial setup is very complex; specifically, a lot of XML effort is required."
"The price is high. I believe there should be a cheaper version for only the caching solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is worth it, if you have the time to go through the information."
"This is like the "Cadillac" of performance monitoring software. It's not cheap... I am currently with a company that I was able to convince that the product is worth the cost."
"Compared to the other tools on the market, Foglight is okay in terms of pricing and licensing."
"Pricing is very reasonable. We were able to construct a pretty easy contract with Quest, who were very easy to work with and very amenable to what we are trying to do. It worked out well for us."
"The price of Foglight could be a little more competitive in Chile, and it should be lowered for long-time customers— at least by 20 percent. Sometimes the price is a limitation. We have seven instances and nearly 5 million users. If Quest Foglight could reduce its prices for the clients that have been with it for a long time, we would be able to have more instances."
"It is cost-effective. With our EA, it is really based on the scale of our database environment. We found the Quest team to be reasonable and flexible when it comes to pricing and scaling of licenses."
