Log analysis has become clearer and faster but visualization and extensibility still need work
The problem was with the complexity and the cost to add extensions. We found this very expensive to buy another version with additional features. I think that Graylog Enterprise does not have customizable dashboards. I did not see them in Graylog Enterprise because most of the time we used the open source free version, which is limited. I think Graylog Enterprise should improve some things that they have in the paid version and perhaps provide users with a menu that gives examples of parsing logs and draws graphics so that people do not need to improve another system such as Grafana. This would be interesting. When it comes to functionalities, I found the log management in Graylog Enterprise acceptable. It is very simple to use and to collect logs. It has support for different protocols and different ports, and the sidecar is easy to use. However, in visualization, I think it needs to be much better.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would consider myself Graylog2's number one fan or at least a big advocate of the utility of this product."
"Message forwarding through the in-built module."
"Troubleshooting is straightforward with Graylog Enterprise."
"We have scaled from a single machine installation (a VM with a Graylog + ES + MongoDB) to (2 Graylog + 2 ES + 3 MongoDB). This was done smoothly with a minimal impact on logging."
"The build is stable and requires little maintenance, even compared to some extremely expensive products."
"Storing logs in Elasticsearch means log retrieval is extremely fast, and full text search is available by default."
"We run a containerized microservices environment, and being able to set up streams and search for errors and anomalies across hundreds of containers is why a log aggregation platform like Graylog is valuable to us."
"The build is stable and requires little maintenance, even compared to some extremely expensive products."
"The pricing and licensing are at its best in the market when compared with other vendor's SIEM products."
"All companies should buy an AlienVault SIEM, as it is well worth the investment."
"AlienVault is willing to offer flexible and competitive pricing."
"The dashboards are very descriptive and contain just the right amount of information. The activity alarms and events contain a plethora of data that is very descriptive and useful."
"AlienVault's reporting is good. I like that vulnerability assessment is part of the solution, and the UI is intuitive. Also, the overhead is low, which is to say we don't need a dedicated SOC team to manage and analyze things constantly. We're a small company that doesn't have those resources."
"The UI is clean and easy to use."
"Undoubtedly having all security core technology under one roof, as provided by the all-in-one USM solution from AlienVault, is a big advantage for day-to-day business security operations."
"I think this has a lot of valuable functions that really could be leveraged quite nicely."

Cons

"The biggest problem is the collector application, as we wanted to avoid using Graylog Collector Sidecar due to its architecture."
"I would like to see a default dashboard widget that shows the topology of the clusters defined for the graylog install."
"When it comes to configuring the processing pipeline, writing the rules can be very tedious, especially since the documentation isn't extensive on how the functions provided for these rules work."
"We ran into problems with Elasticsearch throwing a circuit-breaking exception due to field data size being too large. It turned out that the heap size directly impacted this size in a high-throughput environment, causing unexplained instability in Graylog. We were able to troubleshoot on the Elasticsearch size, but we should have been able to reference some minimum requirements for Graylog to know that our settings weren't sufficient."
"Graylog can improve the index rotation as it's quite a complex solution."
"Over six months, I had two similar issues where searches were performed on field "messages". It exhausted all the memory of the ES node causing an ES crash and a Graylog halt."
"The alerting system could be more flexible."
"Dashboards, stream alerts and parsing could be improved."
"The one thing I continue to dislike about the USM is the limitation on reports."
"Most of the troubleshooting requires going through the Linux command line and bypassing the GUI."
"There were deployment issues. At the time, it was right after USM Anywhere had been released, and not all of the documentation was posted."
"I'd like to see a dashboard that's a little more descriptive."
"This solution could be easier to use."
"The configuration is somewhat complex and the interface a bit non-intuitive."
"The Log Management and configuration of email notifications should be user-friendly."
"Product stability: The biggest issue we have seen with the product is its poor stability. Every version upgrade is a nightmare."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you want something that works and do not have the money for Splunk or QRadar, take Graylog."
"There is an open source version and an enterprise version. I wouldn't recommend the enterprise version, but as an open source solution, it is solid and works really well."
"I use the free version of Graylog."
"You get a lot out-of-the-box with the non-enterprise version, so give it a try first."
"It's an open-source solution that can be used free of charge."
"Having paid official support is wise for projects."
"We are using the free version of the product. However, the paid version is expensive."
"We're using the Community edition."
"AlienVault is flexible on their pricing for unlimited licenses."
"They charge a license based on the storage. ATT AlienVault USM is a less expensive solution than IBM QRadar."
"We pay around $12,000 a year including storage."
"QRadar, ArcSight and Splunk are some of the most expensive SIEM products out there in the market and not everyone has the budget to buy them. In such cases, AV USM is a very cost effective alternative."
"It is affordable, and it also has many features that the premium products such as ArcSight and QRadar have. It is a very good platform for a SIEM solution. Everything is included in the price."
"The price point is good."
"AT&T AlienVault USM is an expensive solution and we pay for the license and the support separately. We paid for the license and support for three years."
"AlienVault is certainly not nearly as expensive as Splunk or QRadar. It's decently priced, but I don't have the exact figure."
