Advantageous from a sustainability perspective since the networking, storage, and compute are all located within one unit
Hyperconverged is used in an environment where the footprint in the data center is restricted. It is advantageous from a sustainability perspective since the networking, storage, and compute are all located within one unit The most beneficial feature is the life cycle management. I haven't had…

Has a deployment phase that is straightforward but needs improvement in the area of scalability
The main issue with HPE SimpliVity is that you are very attached to VMware or VMware dependencies because the tool works with VMware technology. HPE SimpliVity is an add-on from VMware. Nowadays, my company has a lot of concerns about VMware's licensing policy. Another big concern of the tool is related to security because one has to continuously update patch vulnerabilities that are appearing continuously in VMware's different versions. Actually, the foundation of all the architecture is VMware and that is one of the main issues with the tool. My company is analyzing our virtual infrastructure strategy to see if we can move to Nutanix because maybe it may work better and might have another approach. Nutanix is absolutely independent of VMware. I could add that since HPE SimpliVity is very precisely dependent on VMware, it is not open to containers unlike Nutanix, for example. The aforementioned area is a concern that needs to be resolved by HPE.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's a very complete product with residencies to protect data and secure it end-to-end. It includes storage, computing, and networking, offering a fully ten-key solution."
"Reasonably priced and easy to manage for small to medium size companies that don't have an IT department."
"The solution has many good features."
"We like the fact that the hyper-converged infrastructure provides a simple to grow, easy to configure platform."
"No concerns or issues with stability."
"The product enables me to use any software or database."
"I've found the data protection features the most valuable."
"If you were comparing this solution to VMware, it has more features, and it's very fast on the recovery."
"The most valuable feature is that the product has an inborn backup."
"Technical support is perfect. They explain to us the solution in a very clear and simple way. When we call them, they know the right answer and get the right person automatically."
"Its performance and availability are most valuable."
"Disaster Recovery (DR) with very minimal effort."
"The built-in backup and quick restore are good features."
"SimpliVity works well in a UAT environment.."
"Stability is pretty good. We have no complaints as it has been running seamlessly with no downtime."
"SimpliVity has provided our organization with a cost effective DR/data protection solution."

Cons

"The solution would be better served if it integrated with other solutions better."
"In my country, the biggest issue is probably pricing."
"Could be more secure and more economical."
"Scalability is an issue because it becomes very expensive. When you need to upgrade memory, you have to upgrade memory across the nodes. Suppose a customer has gone with a three-node HCI solution, then to increase the memory, you have to do it across the three nodes."
"I would like to see a more intuitive, user-friendly UI."
"The solution needs to add a module or plugin of vCenter for clear monitoring and insights."
"One of the things that can be improved is that today, is supporting VMware, maybe as a hypervisor. But it would be good to have an open kind of platform for other hypervisors, maybe. Like Nutanix is doing, it's very open."
"Data protection and optimization: It is really weak. They do not offer deduplication or compression."
"SimpliVity needs to add support for Hyper-V and KVM."
"The main issue with HPE SimpliVity is that you are very attached to VMware or VMware dependencies because the tool works with VMware technology."
"There are a lot of different components to choose from in the chassis. This could be easier by providing a standard or a base model to create and configure from."
"Our customers are always looking or a discount on the product."
"The initial setup was a little complex because we were in the first version, fresh releases."
"It crashes often. When one particular VM has random, large IOPS requests, it will bog down the node, and there isn't enough time for the replica to be brought up. So all the VMs on that one particular node will essentially become offline."
"Once you select the size of SimpliVity, it could be risky for you to downsize it because you may need maybe to reimplement some things."
"I would like them to add more connection capability, a hub and spoke model, to improve the number of connections that it can handle."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solutions cost us a lot."
"It could be cheaper, everything could be cheaper."
"The solution is too expensive for our customers. The pricing should be lower."
"The product's pricing is very competitive because HPE provides a buyback policy to users...Users can make either monthly or yearly payments towards the licensing cause of the solution."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Pricing with Dell EMC is double the price which I paid for HPE. However, in the end, Dell EMC is double in performance. This is not an apple to apple comparison though, as I have a four node from Dell EMC and a three node."
"There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"The solution is expensive - not only the hardware costs but server costs too. And the more you scale, the more expensive it gets."
"The licenses from the product are expensive compared to the other solutions in the market."
"Its licensing is yearly."
"There are additional costs for storage."
"This solution, while costly as all these solutions are, was in fact less expensive than upgrading my old SAN."
"For most use cases, look to see if you can use all-flash as the price point, as it has come down significantly."
"Customers always complain that SimpliVity is a little bit higher in price point as compared to other solutions available in the market."
"The pricing of HPE SimpliVity is comparable with other solutions so the price is good."
"ESXi licensing is a big part of initial investment if you do not already have that covered."
