Automation platforms streamline processes and offer flexibility, but AI integration and version upgrades pose challenges
In the technology world, there is always room for improvement. Technologies evolve day by day, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence and generative AI models. Although IBM BPM is a substantial product, adopting and integrating new technologies quickly is not easy due to the migration and upgrade paths involved. Every time new versions are released, we face business and production challenges that make rapid adoption challenging. The main concern bothering me today regarding IBM BPM is the integration of AI components.

Lightweight clustering has improved banking channels and delivers faster, reliable deployments
JBoss Enterprise Application Platform's best features include that it was very simple to install and enabling clustering between two instances was simpler than compared to WebSphere or WebLogic. Clustering became very much easier, and setup was very straightforward. I used other products such as WebSphere and WebLogic, and I saw JBoss Enterprise Application Platform as a very lightweight container rather than a heavy container. The startup time was much faster compared to other application servers, and debugging was reliable. We did not see the application going into a hang state. It never happened in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. Other application servers typically degrade over time, and the application resources can become hung. The memory utilization and the heap garbage collection that was running was very efficient, so the resource utilization was better. The robust security model of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform contributed positively to our data integrity and compliance in our development processes, and it was very good.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One of the reasons for adopting this solution ten years ago was its ease of use. It had a lot of off-the-shelf functionality, and it did not need to be developed specifically for the project that we were implementing. That was the main reason for adopting it in the beginning."
"IBM BPM's best features include document sharing, management document creation, widget and barcode creation, and integration."
"By automating several tasks, we have already reduced a lot of work for the business."
"Enabled us to convert most of the paper-based work into an automated workflow process, and some of them were converted into straight-through processing, with no human interaction involved whatsoever."
"The most valuable features come in the bundle, the design process, creating services, creating BPDs, creating coaches, and UI/UX."
"It is efficient in reducing costs."
"It is transparent to business users because it is mostly picture based modelling."
"The case management and its integration with process design are good features."
"The best feature for JBoss Enterprise Application Platform for me is high availability, and it is very strong."
"The deployment and initial setup is easy, it is easier than the previous version."
"JBoss Enterprise Application Platform works very well."
"Stable and easy to handle in terms of hosting applications."
"It's convenient and barebone."
"Its technical support is excellent."
"The robust security model of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform contributed positively to our data integrity and compliance in our development processes, and it was very good."
"The most valuable features of this solution are scalability and performance."

Cons

"If the processing gets better, it would be more efficient."
"Our developers are complaining that it's too complex to maintain."
"The solution can improve integration with SAP, CRM, and Salesforce, which is not capital-intensive."
"The engine itself tends to accumulate a lot of data that needs to be cleaned up, and that's the kind of thing that keeps it from, in some scenarios, scaling as much as it needs to. And then, when you're building solutions, if you're not careful to keep the screens from being associated with too much data, if you're going to just do things the way that a lot of people would just assume that they can do, without having experience of having made those mistakes before, it will accumulate a lot of data, and that will cause it to perform very badly."
"I think the best way it can be improved is to make it easier to install. It's a very complicated piece of software, and there are a lot of things you have to do to get it set up."
"Except for the Lucene the index - we had a couple of issues in the Process Portal where the Lucene index went out of sync, and we had to work at least 15 - 20 hours to have it back in sync with the database."
"The configuration is not that easy, and the initial deployment took three months."
"The options for customization could be improved. More customization using your own code would be beneficial."
"It was too expensive to license JBoss Enterprise Application Platform for each process."
"This solution needs better management UI."
"Lacks some functional requirements."
"It's hard to find out the root cause of errors."
"Sometimes, I observe the memory usage at 100% for the server, and this issue could be improved."
"Its architecture needs improvement."
"In my opinion, there are areas that could be improved with JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, such as the management console."
"A graphic user interface can be added."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Our customers do see ROI. They'll identify some particularly painful or uncoordinated processes to start with, then build out from there, picking off low hanging fruit."
"I wish it was less expensive. I don't know why their pricing model is so high for a piece of software that could benefit so many. It just seems to me that they could have a lower cost, maybe with fewer features or whatever, but it should be possible to do a lower cost workflow software that uses the same interface and underlying engine but does not cost so much that you have to be a Fortune 50 company to buy it. It is annoying to me. There are a lot of solutions that IBM has that are really powerful but nobody can afford them. They know their business, but I still feel that there are a lot of customers who would benefit from this sort of thing. I don't know what this elitism is all about. I am sure they have people doing the money numbers, but it seems like you can make a lot more money by selling it to way more people for a little bit less."
"I already compared some solutions related to business process management, and I saw that the cost of IBM BPM is more expensive compared with that of Camunda, for example."
"I rate the tool's pricing a seven out of ten."
"We have a yearly licensing model. It is not expensive. There are no addition costs to the standard license."
"The price of the solution is fair for an enterprise solution that has both cloud and on-premise deployments and when comparing to competitors. Recently IBM has introduced Cloud Pak which allows for more flexible licensing options for automation and other features."
"The solution is expensive since it is an enterprise application."
"It gives us a good return on investment."
"It is an open-source solution."
"The solution is cost-effective."
