I work for a fintech company where we create several strategies generally built on finance data, which are like one-time series data. We deal with huge bulk data on a daily basis, and we use kdb+ for data ingestion and usage The most valuable feature of kdb+ is the speed at which it returns the…

When it comes to how Oracle Database can be improved, for me it is all about training and development in terms of gamification, creating awareness, and spreading the word to aspiring database administrators and database developers. As I have used it in the past and in recent times, many people are trying to get into IT, so the opportunity exists. Oracle has the market opportunity to take this time to spread its offerings and ensure that many aspiring professionals are aware of its services and products. From my perspective, there is not much to add regarding the needed improvements for the interface and the documentation. I give it a nine because I think Oracle sometimes can make things complicated. You have many services, many products, and many tools for different use cases. So it is difficult for someone who is only used to a particular product, such as Oracle Database, to understand all the other products and services that it provides. Probably streamlining it and making it available with categorized use cases for specific job roles would help. If you are a database developer, these are the tools that you need to be familiar with in Oracle's suite of products, and if you are a database administrator, these are the tools. Categorizing them based on the job role or function of people who are accessing these products and providing training capabilities on how to use them and how these products interchange and talk to each other would be very important because that is one of the things I struggled with when I started my journey as an Oracle Database administrator. Having that visibility of all the software products and providing free training and documentation on how you can improve and which products are best suited for integration to your product from Oracle would go a long way to help organizations and professionals. Regarding Oracle Database's AI capabilities, I am very keen on its governance and security. I think more work needs to be done on the security and ensuring that the database for a large number of people is watertight. AI is here to stay; however, governance and more stress testing of the AI capabilities needs to be done to ensure there is no breach of data. I would rate it currently at 6 over 10 and there is room for improvement. As long as there are government policies and Oracle policies that can mitigate any breaches of data and serious security issues, releasing people's records over the internet, there is always room for improvement in that regard.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution returns data quickly, and data retrieval is fast in kdb+."
"There is a lot of information available on the internet, so problems can easily be fixed."
"Right now, I would say that Oracle is one of the best solutions for our customers in terms of stability."
"Oracle Database is a strong relational database management system."
"The product's initial setup phase was very easy."
"The best thing about Oracle Database is that it performs well when measured on any scale."
"The concurrency, consistency, and security features are the most valuable, and it is also a very robust solution."
"In the past when we wanted to merge data, we needed to consider the series of the data, but with Oracle Database there is no need to index the data."
"Now when our application has become mission-critical, even with the SE version we are able to deal with a complete load very efficiently and effectively."

Cons

"The solution should have a more user-friendly user interface."
"Oracle Database could improve by providing access and integration with containers."
"On the ERP side, they do not seem to be improving the on-premises version. They seem to want to push the cloud option on users."
"Problems can arise if there are too many requirements or a lot of details which must be applied to connect the software to the database."
"I give it a nine because I think Oracle sometimes can make things complicated."
"It should have more monitoring features. There should be features to be able to analyze the performance with a query. In Microsoft SQL Server, when you are running any stored procedure, if you want to analyze the performance, you just run the query analyzer. You can easily find out that something is missing in a joint condition, or clustering needs to be added because of a delay. I can't find such features in Oracle Database. They should be added."
"You're always going to find some product that's cheaper. Oracle is never cheap."
"Oracle has added a new optimizer option to do some very fancy stuff, but it provides the wrong results."
"I can't think of anything that makes me think, “Oh, we have to have it.”"

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I do not have first-hand knowledge of the price of the support. However, I have heard from my seniors or the experienced people who work on the pricing and scaling, the price of Oracle is a bit higher. The reason is Oracle provides enterprise-level applications, only large enterprises can afford Oracle applications or tools."
"The pricing should be cheaper."
"The product is costly."
"It's not cheap, but sometimes, you get what you pay for."
"It is quite expensive."
"Our licensing costs are between $40,000 and $50,000 per year. Those are the costs that cover maintenance and licensing."
"The licensing costs are on a yearly basis."
"Its licensing is yearly. It is expensive, and it should be cheaper."
