A stable solution that can be used for data discovery, but it should include more tutorials for new users

I am quite satisfied with the reporting part of the product. However, compared to other tools, the modeling part is not as strong. Data modeling is not as easy on MicroStrategy as it is on other platforms. I have worked with the administration tool and the Architect tool for MicroStrategy, but creating a star schema is not as easy compared to other tools. Creating hierarchies and the modeling part is challenging because data modeling is one of the most important aspects of any BI project. If you can create a star schema or Snowflake schema easily, then report building becomes straightforward. Additionally, MicroStrategy's Workstation tool compared to Developer still lacks some functionality that can be done more easily on the Developer side. Workstation is a great tool, but they have not given it full functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Kyvos are reconciliation and its ability to query big data."
"The simplicity of MicroStrategy is what I like the most."
"Visual Insights (VI)"
"Visual Insight allows the developer to create reports and/or cubes as the foundation and the end user can easily pull any of the metrics and attributes into the report, graph or other visualization without requiring technical reporting knowledge."
"It is always nice to have one solution in a single platform, because you can do pretty much everything instead of having to get a little bit here or a little bit there."
"MicroStrategy's multilarity and the range of features which it comes with makes it a key building block of our entire data value chain, starting from the production of data, where you could essentially use the transactions services to become your app that generates the data through to data blending and data wrangling, which handles most of your cleansing and cleaning up of the data."
"It has certainly given people the ability to ask more questions and get more answers."
"MicroStrategy's solution for mobile is very good."
"The most important feature is the way it handles ad hoc queries and provides formatted reports."

Cons

"Since I couldn't find any tutorials or a handbook, I had some initial difficulty understanding the UI and the whole interface of Kyvos."
"It needs better visualizations."
"Every software with a flawed design has issues. MicroStrategy is not an exception."
"The customisation was difficult."
"There needs to be better visualization."
"They need to supply the support system that's just not there right now. They don't have Enterprise Manager classes. You need in-depth classes to understand what those metrics are doing, to understand the table associations from one to the other. You can't just go and pick it up and understand that DT_DAY connects to all of these tables, without going into Architect, looking at the source tables. I, as a analyst, a slightly technical user, I don't have the expertise to do that. Business users definitely don't have the expertise to do that."
"Currently, export from VI is not working as expected. (Most visuals get converted to bar chart when exporting.)"
"Data preparation-wise, it was not so straightforward with respect to getting different sources. Preparing or transforming the data inside and then bringing it onto the dashboard was a bit difficult, and the experience could have been better."
"We have seen some stability issues with MicroStrategy on cloud. We have a few unhappy customers."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
"The price of MicroStrategy is reasonable."
"It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think."
"MicroStrategy's licensing cost is higher than that of other tools in the market. My company uses the enterprise edition of the product."
"I am unsure what the licensing costs are for this solution however, development costs are around $100,000 per year."
"We have a license with packages, and there are additional costs for extra components."
"Pricing, in general, is high. With Power BI, you get mobile with the license, whereas with MicroStrategy, you have to purchase mobile for extra."
"They can improve its licensing. It is a bit expensive as compared to Microsoft and other tools."
