The database setup is a pain initially, but once it's done everything works fine.

Microsoft Power BI has many features and there is not a lot to improve. However, the licensing can be confusing. When deciding between Pro and Premium, I find it difficult to distinguish what features are offered by Pro and what features are offered by Premium, including the particular differences to choose between both licensing models. Additionally, some features such as DAX, which I mentioned previously, involve DAX calculations and complex data modeling, which are somewhat advanced and not easily understandable. Prior knowledge is required or you need to go through the documentation. If the documentation is made comprehensive so that anyone with no knowledge on DAX can easily use it by going through the documentation, it would be really helpful. Additionally, if the integration with non-Microsoft tools is improved and performance is optimized, then Microsoft Power BI can become a top-ranked visualization tool. The user experience with Microsoft Power BI is quite good. The intuitive user interface makes it easy for both technical and non-technical users to create reports. However, only the advanced features are somewhat complex, and if the documentation is improved, it can be easily accessible.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Well certainly this product has helped many finance users in the organization as this product enables them to see the numbers for any cost center and business unit and also get a consolidated view of group level numbers."
"This tool is mainly used for forecasting, and it will, for sure, help all the organizations that need data/reports on expenses and headcount forecasting."
"Khalix is a simple tool that builds on existing data sources to develop solutions in forecasting, planning and consolidation needs."
"This product offers a wide range of corporate performance management tools for powerful financial consolidation, planning and reporting."
"What I have found valuable about Microsoft BI is its performance and ease of use. The interface is very simple and it is accessible to everyone. If someone is new to this type of solution it is straightforward to understand."
"Comparing with Microsoft BI, we found Microsoft to have better handling, graphics, features, and easier development and coding."
"The most valuable feature of Microsoft Power BI is the user experience."
"The drill-down capabilities and automatic charts are the best ones, and the visualization is also very good; in terms of visualization, no competing product, such as IBM Cognos or any other product, has the same capabilities."
"It is very well integrated with other Microsoft products, including PowerApps and Excel, as well as Access, so it fits well into our workflow."
"We have used QlikView; Microsoft BI's dashboards are easier to use and not as complex."
"Its scalability is really good, because Microsoft has put in a lot of effort."
"The biggest improvement comes from a do it once, refresh many concept, where users build their reports once and then simply refresh the data, giving them a lot more time to perform analysis, which is the real added value to the business."

Cons

"Web based reporting can have better user interface and functions."
"If you compare it with Oracle then Longview isn't that user friendly."
"The initial set up was complex and painful, both with respect to database setup and the execution script."
"The original cost is set to use enterprise wide but the users growth is too slow to justify the cost. That's one of the reasons we stopped using this tool."
"For example, permission management and user access management are still a bit limited."
"There are some connector-related issues in their MSBA solution and there are certain features that Microsoft should include in the MSBA solution."
"Microsoft Power BI was born native on the cloud, however, it's quite difficult when it has to connect to on-premise data sources."
"The solution is not really stable. I've faced a lot of limitations especially in terms of some data flows updates."
"Microsoft has made a lot of progress with Power BI in the past couple of years, but there is still some room for improvement."
"The reporting part of Microsoft BI is rather limited compared to other reporting tools."
"The paginated report functionality, which was intended to replace SPSS, is not yet up to the mark."
"The solution is somewhat costly in comparison with MSBI tools."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I rate the product pricing a ten."
"Microsoft Power BI has reasonable pricing."
"Microsoft BI is not very cheap. A premium license costs roughly 5,000 euros a month."
"The price of the license can be better."
"Its pricing is great."
"We're charged a monthly subscription fee of 500 rupees per person."
"Paid for itself in the first month."
"Its price is very low. It is like $10 per user, per month. The clients pay for their own licenses. It is not on us. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees. That's the beauty. With other systems, you need to spend a couple of thousand dollars just to get started, and then you need to spend $500 per year for the license, which becomes much more costly. You have a system here where for $120 to $140 a year, you can start with two people and start developing and deploying. You can see why the cost difference is huge, especially when you are on a low scale, like us, and you're not building something very huge."
