Modern analytics tool enhances user interactions with neat visualizations for improved decision-making
One area for improvement could be in offering more advanced features even in the open-source edition or making the paid versions more cost-effective. Data scalability, especially if the data grows, requires manual infrastructure management, which could be improved. Increased customization and visualization options in the open-source edition would be beneficial. Additionally, it might be helpful if more complex queries and stored procedures were supported.

Microsoft Power BI has many features and there is not a lot to improve. However, the licensing can be confusing. When deciding between Pro and Premium, I find it difficult to distinguish what features are offered by Pro and what features are offered by Premium, including the particular differences to choose between both licensing models. Additionally, some features such as DAX, which I mentioned previously, involve DAX calculations and complex data modeling, which are somewhat advanced and not easily understandable. Prior knowledge is required or you need to go through the documentation. If the documentation is made comprehensive so that anyone with no knowledge on DAX can easily use it by going through the documentation, it would be really helpful. Additionally, if the integration with non-Microsoft tools is improved and performance is optimized, then Microsoft Power BI can become a top-ranked visualization tool. The user experience with Microsoft Power BI is quite good. The intuitive user interface makes it easy for both technical and non-technical users to create reports. However, only the advanced features are somewhat complex, and if the documentation is improved, it can be easily accessible.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature of the solution is its interface, which is used to query data into Metabase. I think it is very useful and handy for a novice."
"It is easy for a new user to learn the tool."
"I rate the solution’s stability a nine out of ten."
"Metabase's key advantage is its modern approach to business intelligence."
"The drill-down capabilities and automatic charts are the best ones, and the visualization is also very good; in terms of visualization, no competing product, such as IBM Cognos or any other product, has the same capabilities."
"Most of the clients I am interacting with are looking towards Power BI because of the cost and simplicities, as it provides an entire feature set and a complete solution with tight integration with Office 365, Dynamics 365, the Microsoft Technology Stack, and datatypes like R and Python."
"It is easy to set up."
"It's a straightforward setup."
"Microsoft Power BI has positively impacted our organization because it has saved a lot of time in creating dashboards, which we were previously doing in Excel sheets."
"What I have found valuable about Microsoft BI is its performance and ease of use. The interface is very simple and it is accessible to everyone. If someone is new to this type of solution it is straightforward to understand."
"Connectivity, installation, and configuration are pretty fast and seamless compared to Cognos."
"Microsoft BI allows us to connect to any database or any dataset, and it automatically renders some of the information which makes things a lot easier for us."

Cons

"One area for improvement could be in offering more advanced features even in the open-source edition or making the paid versions more cost-effective."
"The solution could provide more customization."
"The tool must be made more user-friendly."
"I think there is a need to add a few more advanced visuals in the tool. There are a standard set of visuals in the tool which are available."
"When you have to scale up, you must pay double because you can't just scale up 10 or 15%; you need to double your extra storage, so it's really bad."
"The biggest thing with Microsoft right now is better support. There should be more timely support. We can do 90% of it ourselves by the same token. When we're into the 10%, we do not get timely support via Microsoft's support team."
"They can improve it in terms of rule-based security. Currently, it has very limited rules."
"There could be an integrated AI that can automatically analyze some of your data and highlight or provide suggestions. For example, when you are looking at a data set, it can suggest putting it into a certain type of chart so that you gain different insights or a trend line. You would almost have templates that it would recommend for you."
"I would rate the stability of Microsoft BI at 70 percent. While the solution is scalable, it certainly has its limitations."
"The initial setup is pretty complex. It's not straightforward or simple."
"I have been doing trial and error to figuring out how to do the data analyzing and modeling. There could be some improvement to simplify it."
"Most clients have MacBooks. Therefore, they use Tableau as Power BI Desktop is not available for the MacBook right now."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Using the open-source edition of Metabase on AWS EC2 cost us around $29 per month for the EC2 instance, which was affordable."
"The product is open-sourced."
"I would not say it is a cheap tool, but it's viable."
"Microsoft BI is considered to be competitively priced when compared to other similar solutions in the market."
"I am satisfied with its price. Its price is very less as compared to Tableau and QlikView."
"While Power BI is generally a paid product, particularly for enterprise features and scalability, you can start with the free version and still achieve significant functionality."
"We have enterprise licenses and some of the other tools or features come as a package and others you have to purchase separately."
"Microsoft BI is not expensive. Compared to the price of other BI products, the price is very fair."
"The cost of this product is very low, at approximately $8 or $9 per month for a developer."
"I very much recommend the free trial mode."
"Make it low in cost. It is a no-brainer!"
