Real-time messaging has transformed customer updates and now powers responsive AI experiences
The primary benefits of Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB include horizontal scalability. The main advantage is that it handles data growth without requiring database redesign when traffic increases. Low latency access is another key benefit, as read and write operations are very fast, which is extremely helpful for real-time applications. Flexibility is also valuable because Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB uses JSON schema format, which contrasts with traditional table schemas that require time-consuming changes. In modernization scenarios where client requirements change rapidly, Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB offers more flexible schema design. High availability is another important feature, as it is well-suited for business-critical systems. My overall experience using Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB with other Azure services shows that it is more flexible compared to SQL Database and more readable because of its JSON format, making it easy to understand. It is more interactive because viewing the Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB schema clearly shows what is happening in the application and what will be achieved. In contrast, SQL requires writing many queries to obtain details, making Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB more suitable and flexible. My team's experience developing with Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB SDKs and APIs has been very comfortable and easy to implement. We are currently migrating .NET applications to Python-based AI solutions using Copilot, where we performed reverse engineering and are moving to forward engineering. We use APIs to connect with Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB and manage database containers and items, performing CRUD operations such as create, delete, and read operations, and querying JSON. We are using REST APIs with Python-based solutions, with a service layer and Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB integration.

Handles large data volumes effectively but connection issues require attention
The Oracle NoSQL solution is used primarily for storing data for our web applications. We work alongside the DBA team for this purpose, given that specific departments manage aspects of its use. We choose it specifically to handle large scales of data, such as in one of our bank customer's scenarios using more than nine hundred gigabytes of data.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It works reasonably fast. You can retain the original format of the document as received by the third-party system."
"Big data, along with data analysis, is one of the valuable features."
"When all resources are at the same point, there is no lag and in production we have experienced minimal issues, with the project live for two years without any database problems."
"Azure Cosmos DB offers efficient indexing and low search latency, making searching fast and efficient and ensuring peace of mind in database operations."
"From a global distribution perspective, Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB is good and easy to handle."
"We primarily use Cosmos DB because it's a managed platform service, eliminating concerns about hosting and reliability."
"I truly recommend Cosmos DB because it is a serverless product."
"I definitely recommend Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB."
"The features I've found to be most valuable are the speed of reading and writing (read/write performance levels are really high), the transactions model (semantics for data manipulation), and just the overall simplicity of using it."
"Oracle NoSQL is pretty scalable."
"With Oracle NoSQL, our clients have a highly scalable, simple to set up database that performs very well when data is organized correctly from the beginning."
"So far, we find stability to be very reasonable, it is dependable and we do not have any big issues."
"The tool is easy to learn."
"Try it! You’ll be impressed."
"NoSQL has high availability; I think it's perfect from a technical perspective, and it's quick to run and go."
"We have a support agreement with Oracle, ensuring full support for the product. It is crucial for our public-facing features. Oracle NoSQL is easy to manage and has fast data retrieval. Its compatibility with Oracle Database is seamless, making integration between NoSQL and relational databases smooth and effortless. Oracle NoSQL and NoSQL data replication in our environment works efficiently. Oracle fully supports it, and we can easily configure and manage authentication for the NoSQL database."

Cons

"An improvement would be a more robust functionality around updating elements on a document, or some type of procedural updates that don't require pulling the entire document."
"Overall, it works very well and fits the purpose regardless of the target application. However, by default, there is a threshold to accommodate bulk or large requests. You have to monitor the Request Units. If you need more data for a particular query, you need to increase the Request Units."
"I would give a low rating to Microsoft support, as whenever I talked to them, I never got a solution. I had to guide them."
"I am disappointed with the lack of compatibility of the Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB emulator with Mac."
"It is easy to use, but optimization has been a mixed experience. It has been more of trying to figure out how to do so. We have not found much support there, so we have to come up with our own way of optimizing it in different ways. That is one area of improvement."
"What is missing in Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB is definitely cold storage. We know it's coming, but that's currently what is missing—the possibility to park older data in a cold tier."
"A further simple application is required for Brazil."
"While Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB is generally easy to use, it has some limitations."
"Personally, I’d like to see some improvements in the monitoring UI for it."
"The main areas that need improvement with NoSQL are in the area of big data and user-friendly presentation."
"The installation is difficult."
"You will get high performance when you organize your data correctly at the beginning. Otherwise, there are instability issues."
"Handling big data in a user-friendly way is currently a bit of an issue. The dashboard for this needs some work."
"Focusing on making the administration easier compared to other solutions like MongoDB could be beneficial. Simplifying the administrative tasks could enhance the user experience."
"I would rate Oracle NoSQL six or 6.5 out of ten based on my experience."
"Oracle could improve how NoSQL works in containers. I don't think NoSQL needs any new features, but I want to see new features in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. I would like to see some improvements in OCI's building options."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This cost model is beneficial because it allows for cost control by limiting resource units (RUs), which is ideal. However, for our needs, we can't engage with their minimum pricing, which ranges from 100 to 1,000 RUs. At the bare minimum, we need to use 4,000 RUs for a customer. I would like to find a way to gain some advantages from the lowest tier, particularly the ability to scale down if necessary. It would be helpful to have more flexibility in cost management at the lower end."
"Azure is a pay as you go subscription."
"The tool is not expensive."
"It seems to have helped significantly. We were using a different database system previously, and one of the reasons for acquiring Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB was cost."
"It is expensive. The moment you have high availability options and they are mixed with the type of multitenant architecture you use, the pricing is on the higher end."
"The solution is very expensive."
"The pricing and licensing model was initially difficult to understand, but as soon as I learned what was going on and how it was priced, it was pretty easy."
"Cosmos DB is expensive, and the RU-based pricing model is confusing. Although they have a serverless layer, there are deficiencies in what I can define and assign to a database. Estimating infrastructure needs is not straightforward, making it challenging to manage costs."
"The product is expensive and Oracle could work to lower the licensing cost."
