Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Creates cost optimization by eliminating required backup agent licenses
One of the current challenges: More than 60TB database, weekly backup taking over two days, and incremental is almost over eight hours. This is extremely resource consuming with a lot of backup duration, etc. Recovery also becomes tough. The one time backup with incremental forever should release us from this pain.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"You can store backups for a while."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"Able to reduce administrative burden on tape management."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."
"We are getting rid of our tape libraries, so this is an alternative to that, we don't have to have 100s and 1000s of tapes, and we are going into the cloud, so this helps us go into the cloud while providing better security for backup data."
"The one time backup with incremental forever should release us from this pain."

Cons

"I would like to see more web support."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."
"I don't actually use the solution."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"I would like to see more web support."
"We need more time to discover the cons of the product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is a bit high."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It is a rather expensive program."
