Improves time management by reducing database provisioning time
The feature I appreciate the most in Nutanix Database Service is the Time Machine. The simplicity of the Time Machine feature in Nutanix Database Service and being able to have a point in time that you can go back to at whatever your retention period is, is really great and helpful for us. The Time Machine feature in Nutanix Database Service has definitely reduced turnaround time for when we need clones or other environments spun up off of our existing environment, such as for corruption. It has helped the workload significantly. We're a very small team of database administrators. It worked really effectively for them and helped the workflow much more than our previous solution. Using Nutanix Database Service has reduced the time it takes to provision a database by 75%. The efficiency gained by using Nutanix Database Service has led to a positive impact on our business as far as bringing in new applications and workloads. Being able to clone and spin up other environments off of what we already have in NDB eases turnaround time when requests come in, and we're able to fill them and get them back to the business and make them available to customers. We've been able to automate DBA tasks. It simplifies turnaround time. Our DBA can deploy on how own and no longer waits for requests to be fulfilled.

Eliminates replication and allows you to use only one database, speeding up performance and reducing amount of storage
The private solution is expensive. If you're in a situation where you're paying IBM or AWS or somebody just to host you specifically, you're paying people to run it and you're taking care of all the upgrades. As a company, you're either hiring or paying an outsourcer to do that, and you have to manage it, keep up with the updates to the hardware, software, and the operating system. It's very expensive because there's a lot to control and take care of.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has some very good features. It really works with multiple silos in terms of infrastructure, database updates, and migration. So many things are easy with Era."
"With Oracle, it took around one hour to refresh the database and now, with Nutanix, it takes a quarter of that time."
"AI has been deployed within Nutanix. It's very easy to provision the machine within minutes of the application orders. They can hand those over and work along with the AI team to get the data available quickly for business analysis."
"What I appreciate the most about Nutanix Database Service is the standardization and ease of deployment. It makes it easier for the database administrators to deploy without either the database administrator or the business needing all their staff and waiting a long period of time to have their request fulfilled."
"The solution allows quick setting up of new development environments and ensures the use of the storage more efficiently. It manages to create new clients to be utilized for development or reporting."
"The provisioning and other features of Nutanix Database Service have improved my company by making it easy to deploy the databases, and DBAs can just deploy what they need as needed instead of having to manually create VMs for them individually and install the databases and setting everything up with DBAs provisioning databases themselves."
"The solution enables us to speed up the creation of new instances."
"This is a very useful solution for database management."
"It speeds up the performance in terms of how fast you are able to access the data, look at it, get it reported to you, and send it to somebody. It also reduces the amount of storage."
"SAP Replication Server is an application that I consider to be a robust system. It has proven to be highly reliable in my experience."
"SAP is renovating different things. We are using external tools to connect as of now. It is going well, and now the new generation integration platforms are going to be pretty easy."
"We can customize any workflow and we also like the business domain modeling that can be done."
"It's pretty good at handling replication, even under high load. It also provides cross-database replication, for example, from Sybase to Oracle."

Cons

"It should be able to be consumed by other customers because only the enterprise cloud customers are able to buy this software."
"One of the things that we've discovered specific to SQL is that the deployment options that are available do not match our company standards, so we have asked the Nutanix team if that is something that is customizable or if we need to adjust our deployment strategy."
"Nutanix Database Service can be improved by enhancing logging; when we're trying to look for errors, one of the hiccups we always run into is that it's very hard to pinpoint and look through the logs."
"The updating of the database engine is something that can be improved. For example, assume that we are using PostgreSQL out of the box, and it is version 10. If we want to migrate to version 11, 12, or 13, then it is not very easy to do that using Nutanix Era."
"Nutanix Database Service could be improved by making it just a little bit less complex regarding the interface. That said, it's definitely in the right direction."
"There have been instances where clients have been using databases that are not supported by Nutanix Database Service, though I cannot recall which ones at the moment."
"Nutanix Database Service can be improved by implementing more AI capabilities."
"It would be helpful if we could patch Windows operating systems with the solution."
"Improvement is a never ending story, and HANA is doing some improvements. We are able to adopt that, and we have to do it by integration with HANA. They are very major changes that we need to see."
"I would like to see it become mobile-friendly."
"If someone wants to replicate their data from Sybase to a newer technology for data warehousing or other purposes, it would be better if they supported those."
"There is room for improvement in terms of pricing and faster support."
"The private solution is expensive. If you're in a situation where you're paying IBM or AWS or somebody just to host you specifically, you're paying people to run it and you're taking care of all the upgrades."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Era is quite expensive. The thing that will be a showstopper for them in the long run is if you look at it from a technical perspective on what it provides and weigh it up against consolidation of multiple other software suites."
"It's priced fairly... It's a good value. When you go looking for something from Oracle that automates things and makes your life easier, it's always going to be a minimum of $500,000. Era's nothing like that."
"There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"It is amazing. The pricing compared to the time saved is nothing. It's worth the cost."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten."
"Pricing wasn't a surprise. It was what we were expecting it to be."
"The price of the solution is expensive."
"Licensing costs will be the main scalability problem."
"It's a very expensive solution."
"You can pick one of the hosted cloud services as opposed to owning it and doing it yourself. Your cost of ownership on the hardware, the data storage, and the maintenance all go down. It depends on what service you use."
