The Time Machine is the most valuable feature for us. Using it means that we don't have to take regular snapshots, yet we are still able to restore the database quickly in the event of a problem.

It is also a single platform, all in one place, and that is a reason we went for this solution. Earlier, we had multiple platforms, the database and the OS, but this is a single platform that helps us with what we are doing.

We have an enterprise-level backup product that we're required to use, so we don't rely on Era's version. [But] it could be an awesome first-line backup. It's very elegant the way they designed it. It's quick and it doesn't take up nearly as much storage space as traditional backups. It would definitely help to save on tier-one storage.

What I appreciate the most about Nutanix Database Service is the standardization and ease of deployment. It makes it easier for the database administrators to deploy without either the database administrator or the business needing all their staff and waiting a long period of time to have their request fulfilled.

The patching is the most valuable feature. We spent a lot of time and effort on the patching of our SQL instances after hours. With Nutanix Era, you can schedule and automate them during your normal operational hours (during the day). You schedule all the patching, then everything happens automatically with minor tickets from the engineer. So, our patching, which took four hours, went down to an hour for the engineer. This is much better for us from a return on investment perspective.

It has wizards that are very helpful in the installation, and it handles automation as well as virtualization once deployed.

The Time Machine feature in Nutanix Database Service has definitely reduced turnaround time for when we need clones or other environments spun up off of our existing environment, such as for corruption.

I appreciate being able to provision a database quickly from our side. We provision it and hand it off. It makes work much easier. Previously, it would take a week or two to do the same in a traditional way, whereas now, it gets completed within about an hour.

The provisioning and other features of Nutanix Database Service have improved my company by making it easy to deploy the databases, and DBAs can just deploy what they need as needed instead of having to manually create VMs for them individually and install the databases and setting everything up with DBAs provisioning databases themselves.

The updating of the database engine is something that can be improved. For example, assume that we are using PostgreSQL out of the box, and it is version 10. If we want to migrate to version 11, 12, or 13, then it is not very easy to do that using Nutanix Era.

The graphical user interfaces could be much more user-friendly. They are already user-friendly, but they could be simpler so that we do not need L3 staff to handle them. If they were simpler, we could also have some command center or L1/L1.5 associates do some housekeeping activities on it.

The patching should be a one-button function. Also, it works about 80 percent of the time, but 20 percent of the time it requires manual intervention. And sometimes, until you understand the technical underpinnings of that process, you can't fix it. I thought we would move past that. In the last version, they broke a big chunk of that for me, and that's why I'm waiting for the new release because they promised me it would fix the problem.

One of the things that we've discovered specific to SQL is that the deployment options that are available do not match our company standards, so we have asked the Nutanix team if that is something that is customizable or if we need to adjust our deployment strategy. That's the only thing that we've discovered so far.

The initial setup was a little tedious and complex. If they could make the setup slightly more user-friendly, then that would definitely be beneficial. If they could give a clear indication of what ports are required across the business and multiple VLANs, then your prep work can be done beforehand and before you do the actual installation. Because the documentation that was provided was not 100 percent accurate, so we had to do a lot of custom firewall rules after we deployed Nutanix Era.

Nutanix Database Service can be improved by enhancing logging; when we're trying to look for errors, one of the hiccups we always run into is that it's very hard to pinpoint and look through the logs.
