Data warehousing has transformed reporting performance and now delivers near real-time insights
OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) is a very powerful analytic database, but like any platform, there are areas where it can improve to make daily work even smoother. Better cloud-native experience is one area for improvement. OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) was originally designed as an on-premises analytic database and later moved to cloud. Improvement opportunities include more seamless cloud-native features such as auto-scaling, serverless options, and easier cluster management. Competitors such as Snowflake and BigQuery provide more fully managed experiences. Easier UI is another area for improvement. Most administration is currently done by SQL and command line tools. An improvement opportunity would be a more modern web UI for monitoring, workload management, and troubleshooting. Faster ecosystem and community growth is needed. In short, OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) could improve in areas such as cloud-native capability, modern UI for administration, stronger real-time streaming integration, and growing its ecosystem and community. These enhancements would make it easier to manage and adopt compared to newer cloud-first analytic platforms. From a day-to-day operational perspective, there are a few areas where OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) could improve to make our work smoother. Smarter automatic projection management is needed with more intelligence, auto projection creation, automatic optimization, and reduced manual testing with better workload management. Right now, monitoring queries often requires system tables and manual analysis. Troubleshooting slow queries takes time. A modern real-time dashboard showing query bottlenecks and resource users would enable quick detection. The impact could be faster issue resolution and less time spent debugging performance. Storage native interaction with modern data tools is also important. In short, from a day-to-day perspective, improvements in automatic projection optimization, better workload monitoring dashboard, easier schema evolution, and stronger modern tool integration would significantly reduce manual tuning effort and improve developer productivity. While OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) is very powerful, these enhancements would make it more efficient for the analytics team.

Standout features are real-time dashboards and powerful aggregation
This product has a powerful aggregating feature which is great. It also has its own APIs. Whenever the data comes in, it can be streamed out anywhere. It's the only solution that provides real-time dashboards. Tableau doesn't have this feature. The three variants of historical data, real-time data and predicted data from Spitfire, give more strength to LiveDatamart without any dependency on other products. The product is easy to set up with very low maintenance required.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Vertica handles analytics and large queries extremely well — very high performance — and on top of all of these features, Vertica has a very low total cost ownership."
"Do you want to stand up a data warehouse in a reasonable amount of time using the in-house skills accustomed to dealing with an RDBMS? If that is the case, nothing beats Vertica, hands down."
"The data warehouse has exceedingly high performance and has the ability to do large scale queries very effectively."
"OpenText Analytics Database (Vertica) has impacted my organization a lot in terms of driving the key results and giving the key insights to the leadership, and through those data points, a good amount of decisions have been made which was really helpful and impactful at an organizational level."
"Its projections and encoding are excellent tools for tuning large volumes."
"Vertica stands top among its peers in the MPP world, delivering unparalleled speed and performance in query response time."
"Vertica uses advanced Azure technologies to compress raw data using indexing, allowing a large amount of data to be stored with minimal physical space. Advanced algorithms are employed in data compression."
"Data Warehouse response times have decreased of one order of magnitude with respect to the previous solution (SQL Server + Oracle)."
"The solution has a powerful aggregating feature"
"You can create your own rules that include mathematic calculations."
"The solution is mature and stable, even more so since it was acquired by TIBCO."
"The three variants of historical data, real-time data and predicted data from Spitfire, give more strength to LiveDatamart without any dependency on other products."

Cons

"Vertica is relatively new and needs some polish and refinement, but its core functionality is excellent."
"I would personally like to see extended developer tooling suited to Vertica – think published PowerDesigner SQL dialect support, IDE with IntelliSense, and stored procedures which we’ve also had to build a work-around module for."
"But we're not sure yet, SQL Server is way more stable and predictable."
"Some of our small to medium-sized customers would like to see containerization and flexibility from the deployment standpoint."
"It should provide a GUI interface for data management and tuning."
"In the versions I worked with, if a majority of the nodes were being loaded under heavy, sustained rates the nodes would see some dramatic decreases in performance due to the data shuffling that needed to occur between all the nodes."
"It's hard to make it slow for a small data volume. For large volumes, it's hard to make it work. It's also hard to make it faster, and to make it scale."
"Stability, scalability (3 node Community Edition) and backup/restore all need to be worked on."
"The solution's setup could be quicker and easier."
"Improvements need to be made on the load balancing side."
"Live Datamart runs on JVM which only holds Java and only 60 GB of data. If you try to get more out of it than that, it crashes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is reasonable. We use a pay per license model. Firstly, you need to buy a license. After that, you mainly pay the annual support fee of around 20% or 25%. I think their prices are quite reasonable."
"The pricing depends on the license model because there are several. It depends on the client, but it's cheaper than other solutions. I think it's cheap for all the functionality and robustness. It's not very expensive to deploy."
"It is fast to purchase through the AWS Marketplace."
"The solution is free and we pay for the storage."
"The pricing and licensing depend on the size of your environment and the zone where you want to implement."
"The solution is relatively cost-effective."
"I think it's starting to get a little expensive. Open source products are starting to get more robust, so I think that's something that they need to start looking at in terms of licensing."
"It's free up to three nodes and 1TB, and then get in contact with their sales guys."
"The solution might be considered a bit expensive because it competes with open-source products."
