Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"What I like about it personally is that I can go out and interrupt what's going on and bring a job down if I need to, and bring it back up."
"Their technical support is incredible, immediately responsive, and even if it is not updated to Level 2 support sometimes, they chip in providing more detailed answers and options to fix the problem."
"If something breaks and it goes down when it's not supposed to, automation brings it right back up."
"The performance of it is beyond exceptional."
"OPS/MVS is much more intuitive to use, especially compared to Netview/SA/GDPS."
"It is an easy product to use and it is stable."
"Compared to the products on the market, it is hands down the best one."
"It alerts the operators when it is time to repair the communications and the IPLs."
"If SCOM is implemented correctly, it can take away the need for administrators to constantly monitor things or perform health checks."
"IT management experienced a big improvement after implementation of this product."
"It discovers the components automatically, which is a fantastic thing. The discovery works in an automatic way, and it has a dynamic way of discovering the components, assets, and applications. It doesn't require any manual intervention."
"The good reporting capabilities was one of the major functions which made us choose SCOM as the tool for handling MS application operations (only used for that, not the OS platforms)."
"SCOM is capable of providing full-featured infrastructure monitoring, alerting and reporting, especially for Windows-centric production environments."
"The feature I like most about SCOM is that it is easy-to-use."
"Availability monitoring is the feature I have found most valuable, as well as the capacity and ability to send notifications."
"ROI turned out to be pretty good since we had good centralized monitoring for our whole data center and all the outages were quickly escalated from the Command center to the relevant Team."

Cons

"The mainframe TSO side still displays green screens."
"Some of the command sequences are too long."
"One of the things we've been wanting to do is to be able to automate off of different highlighted messages without actually knowing what the message is."
"The reason sometimes it is not stable, we do not have the expertise to write the script."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."
"We're missing the boat. We don't have a graphical display and we need something beyond just pretty PC pictures for the other departments."
"My impressions on OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is that it's quite difficult to use, as it relies mainly on the coding syntax and doesn't provide an easy-to-use GUI."
"There are, however, still some restrictions with sysplex vars as far as which kinds of rules you can use them in, which is also the case for OPSHFI vars."
"There could be more integration of SIM in the solution."
"It would be nice to see the old MP Designer come back as you could quickly design and build a MP without a deep understanding of the XML code behind it."
"Then there is also an issue with capacity and limited space. That is something that needs to be improved."
"SCOM agents have a heavy footprint. Would like a lighter, more-efficient footprint."
"Non Windows monitoring is fairly weak. Network device monitoring is not reliable."
"System Center just provided upgrade and update features for Windows clients, and Windows systems, and did not support Linux, Android, or iOS, and other operating systems."
"Then there is also an issue with capacity and limited space. That is something that needs to be improved."
"Very expensive now that you are forced to buy entire System Center suite, although comparable to other monitoring solutions that include basic APM."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"SCOM's pricing is average."
"It is more expensive than the competition."
"Two customers bought the enterprise agreement with Microsoft and paid for Software Assurance. But few customers don't buy it for Software Assurance. They just buy it and deploy it, and they think that we will be using it for the next five years."
"If you have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, then this is part of the agreement."
"The pricing and licensing are fair."
"I don't know the exact cost because it's managed by our sales team, but Microsoft is on the higher side."
"SCOM is very cheap because it's included in the license for the System Center suite, which is around $8,400 per CAL."
"We have an EA with Microsoft, and it comes as part of the EA."
