Provides different types of logs, but the logs are dispersed in different layers
As per RBI's regulations, we have to perform active log collection and retention of logs for a certain period. The market is too competitive, and various technologies are being adopted. Different cloud providers are available in the market. I am an SIEM service provider. My technology should be well-versed to accommodate all kinds of landscapes from where I can actively collect and process real-time events. I might lose a customer if I miss something due to a technical glitch. Once I address a specific requirement, Oracle should consider it a universal problem. We have to secure the information assets in today's world. This information should be secure in all kinds of environments and geographies, whether deployed on-premise or on the cloud. All different types of logs are available in a unified manner in Oracle. Overall, I rate the solution a five or six out of ten.

Has many predefined correlation rules and is brilliant for investigation and log analysis
It is very complicated to write your own correlation rules without the help of Splunk support. What Splunk could do better is to create an API to the standard SIEM tools, such as Microsoft Sentinel. The idea would be to make it less painful. In ELK Stack, Kibana is the query language with which you can search log files. I believe Splunk has also a query language in which they search their log files, but once you have identified the log file that you want to use for further security correlation, you want to very quickly transport that into your SIEM tool, such as Microsoft Sentinel. That is something that Splunk could make a little bit less painful because it is a lot of effort to find that log file and forward it. An API with Microsoft Sentinel or a similar SIEM tool would be a good idea.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is mapping."
"The IT analysis provides the best solution as to how the infrastructure is going."
"The solution provides different types of logs like audit, service, and API logs."
"The metrics and trends that Splunk Enterprise Security generates using all the data points we send allow customers to understand better what their users are doing."
"The solution is stable and reliable."
"Splunk has significantly helped with aggregation and correlation of critical logs. Not having to grep on each individual server has made everyone more efficient."
"Splunk Enterprise Security offers two valuable features: the Common Information Model and arrangement modules."
"The most valuable features are how stable and easy to use Splunk is."
"Splunk allows us to customize processing and dashboards, which helps us take care of our customers' needs."
"Ease of correlation, creating correlation searches are easy and you can combine multiple sources with little effort"
"Splunk Enterprise Security is a very useful application to collect all the logs and also to find out the problems. You can easily create whatever you want by using its features, and it also has the capability to collect from all kinds of different platforms. Splunk Enterprise Security provides me with all the alerts."

Cons

"The logs in the solution are dispersed in different layers, so we have to pick the logs from different areas."
"Reporting is sometimes a little slow."
"The pricing could be improved."
"The product was difficult to back up the first time."
"The monitoring aspect of Splunk could be improved. We have to do some queries to get as much information as CrowdStrike or other solutions provide. If you run a big query, you will see a delay. That is the only concern we have because it will take some time if you query large data sets."
"There can be a bit of complexity around some fields during the initial setup."
"I have concerns about the architecture as well since I can see it is not very well defined."
"One area Splunk Enterprise Security fails to improve is the pricing aspect; while the initial pricing seems fine, the licensing cost can skyrocket over time, creating trauma for organizations."
"I would like to see future development in terms of ML (Machine Learning)."
"Given the ever-increasing number of threats, I would like Splunk to update its threat signatures more frequently."
"Splunk can improve regex/asset analysis as we do not want to crawl until it is done."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is cheap compared to its alternatives."
"While licensing can be a concern, there are ways to reduce the licensing costs including filtering some events."
"It is possible to use a developer's license, which is up to 10GB per day of volume traffic, which is usually enough for most use cases."
"The subscription is monthly."
"The pricing modules could be improved."
"Pricing is probably its weakest spot. As compared to some competitors, Splunk is really expensive."
"The solution is costly."
"As a team, we prefer the old pricing model with a perpetual license. We are still evaluating the whole subscription-based model."
"The pricing is very complicated, and it is very pricey. You do require a lot of different licenses in order to get a comprehensive solution that is not just the SIEM solution."
