Has improved development efficiency through reusable components and intuitive programming features
When errors occur while programming, they are very generic. Even when searching the internet, the errors remain generic and it takes considerable time to understand the fix. This was predominantly felt because we were mostly working on writing code and developing features. Error handling needs to be improved. The patches and upgrade process is very long. In the last year and a half, I haven't upgraded, so we don't know if latest features have arrived. Another issue is with sessions. If we were working on code and then switch off our laptop for two to three days, the session would keep running. This consumes many resources and flags to the team that a user has been continuously using Oracle SQL Developer. There should be a timeout period for inactive sessions.

Creates intuitive diagrams with comprehensive control over relationships
1) When updating a model after generating a schema, if only a few tables are imported, the tool assumes you want to delete the rest. If you have a large model, you repeatedly have to clarify that you don't want to delete each one. 2) If one could view the same model on physical, logical, and conceptual levels while retaining all information specific to each level (including layout), that would be excellent.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"License is free, setup is simple and scriptable."
"I assess the benefits of Oracle SQL Developer's reporting framework for data-driven decision making by stating that Oracle is the most efficient database for relational databases in my opinion."
"When I measure the amount of time for the same query to run on three different tools, Oracle SQL Developer leads the charts, and on average, if it takes around ten minutes on SQL Server, it takes roughly five to six minutes on Oracle SQL Developer, saving us nearly half an hour to one hour a day."
"As a database trainer, I would like to say that although SQL developer is an open-source software, yet it provides a lot of features that you can find only in paid versions of its counterparts."
"Oracle is tremendous, and I have always said to everybody, without knowing other databases, that Oracle is the best database that can exist in this world."
"The most valuable features of Oracle SQL Developer that I use. However, I do not use all of them"
"The speed with which you can build SQL statements and PL/SQL code has been very valuable."
"When we migrated to Oracle SQL Developer, we found it very user friendly and easy to work with."
"Toad is 100% value for money product."
"This product is fast to learn and a user-friendly tool."
"I don't know the financials, but I wouldn’t be able to do my job (build applications/databases) without it."
"It's a must-buy, and both pricing and licensing is well in the range of every organization."
"TOAD makes it easy to code and compile stored procedures, is easy to find and edit code, offers the ability to debug and test, and is a great tool that saves a lot of time because it has a lot of components all in one tool so you don’t need to open or use other apps or the command line."
"The feature I really like is the graphical part, especially the control of the relationships, because you can move them around any way you want, which makes it easy to create a comprehensive and easy-to-understand diagram."
"It was immensely helpful in collecting SQL database data, especially as I am not a database admin/engineer."
"Toad allowed us to run the query on the cloud DB and return data from the query, making things much faster."

Cons

"I would like it to support background processes better."
"As our company keeps on growing, our data also keeps on growing. Currently, we are a $12-billion company and this tool supports us; our projection in the future is to grow from $12 billion to $20 billion in the next three years and I am not sure whether it might help then or not, as our data will also grow consequently."
"If you're trying to return exceedingly large data sets into the tool for some reason to download, that could be a challenge, depending on the memory on your machine and the disk space you have to output it to."
"Oracle SQL Developer could improve the speed, it is a bit slow."
"There are occasional run time issues."
"Toad is much faster to use. It's not Java which takes a lot of time to query and create things."
"There are always areas of improvement as it relates to the tool's ability, the process that you need to go through in order to connect to some of the non-Oracle databases."
"It would be nice to have the ability to access DBs than Oracle."
"What could be improved in Toad Data Modeler is stability and the complex setup."
"It is not feasible for small businesses. It is not used in a small company."
"It's quite stable but takes a bit of a time to run SQL queries if the database is huge."
"The one thing about it is that there are almost too many features and options; some we don’t even use."
"Currently, with Windows 10, it sometimes would get stuck and stop responding."
"We sometimes have issues with multiple nested queries. They take a long time to run, and it would be nice to have them run faster."
"There were issues due to the databases connectivity."
"It's way overpriced, even if it wasn't the buggy product it has become."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's a free tool."
"It has the advantage that it's free. The next best competitor would cost several thousand dollars."
"It's a no-cost license and it offers outstanding functionality on that basis."
"It is basically free."
"Price-wise, the lesser it is, the better it is for me, especially in Egypt. I think that the licensing cost ranges from 1,000 to 9,000. Also, it includes maintenance and support for a year."
"Though I'm not involved in the licensing for Toad Data Modeler, I believe it's per user and not cheap."
