I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's. Erwin's metadata management is better in how it handles data. There is a lot more user involvement in managing the metadata, primarily because in IDERA ER_Studio, the logical and physical models are separately defined in the same file, so you have to map them every single time. In Erwin, it has a unified structure, so if you make a change in the logical model, it automatically shows up in the physical model. You have to go through a couple of steps in the IDERA model to make sure everything has moved over. While that is not that inconvenient when you are actually doing development, as far as metadata management, that is prone to things getting dropped and missed. The collaboration tools in IDERA ER_Studio are adequate, but I think with Erwin, there is more of an opportunity for things to crash. Changes can be merged in IDERA more fluidly; however, the locking and sharing are a little bit more defined in Erwin. I think the learning curve for Erwin might be easier than IDERA ER_Studio, especially with connecting to different models and systems.

1) When updating a model after generating a schema, if only a few tables are imported, the tool assumes you want to delete the rest. If you have a large model, you repeatedly have to clarify that you don't want to delete each one. 2) If one could view the same model on physical, logical, and conceptual levels while retaining all information specific to each level (including layout), that would be excellent.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"ER/Studio is excellent for large teams; it scales well to teams of over one hundred plus people."
"Customer Service: It's good."
"It was a very good tool at the time since it was complete."
"IDERA keeps up with the versions of Oracle and SQL Server that I'm using. I mostly use SQL Server and when there are new features, a new type of index, for example, IDERA also includes them in upgrades of the data modeling tool."
"The most valuable feature is data modeling, primarily, because it's something that has been lacking in our systems development for 20 years."
"We use it either to help an organization understand what data it has got or to design a database."
"The data modeling module is important to me because I am a database developer and designer, and I also take part in designing applications and that always starts with data modeling, and it's very fast, reliable, up-to-date, so easy to use, smooth."
"We have a database design group of about 15 people. The Repository enables multiple people to work on the same model at the same time. We have fully integrated models, so we have one model for the enterprise data warehouse, one model for MDM, with a lot of sub-models in these things. People work on different parts of the model at different times. So the repository enables us to share the models, and keep track of what everybody is working on."
"SQL Developer is much better than it was."
"The most valuable features are the database architecture, the good functionality, and the user interface."
"TOAD makes it easy to code and compile stored procedures, is easy to find and edit code, offers the ability to debug and test, and is a great tool that saves a lot of time because it has a lot of components all in one tool so you don’t need to open or use other apps or the command line."
"I don't know the financials, but I wouldn’t be able to do my job (build applications/databases) without it."
"This product is fast to learn and a user-friendly tool."
"Ability to save my custom queries and Macros"
"I found all features valuable and necessary in Toad Data Modeler, particularly how good the solution is for modeling, database schema generation, and database re-engineering. I also found Toad Data Modeler straightforward to use."
"Toad allowed us to run the query on the cloud DB and return data from the query, making things much faster."

Cons

"The solution is not so strong at creating modeling views and database views."
"What needs the most improvement are semantic lineage and usability."
"The screens are a bit outdated. They could use a new look and feel."
"I would like to upload, a database with about 3,000 tables. It takes so much time and, finally, it freezes the whole solution so that I actually cannot work with that environment. For the data warehouse, it's fine because I have 20 or 30 tables. It works fine. But, when I reverse-engineer the database with 3,000 tables, it freezes and it's hard to upload and reverse-engineer such environments in ER/Studio."
"When building the relationships there should be a little more flexibility."
"Product registration always seemed difficult and time consuming."
"The number of options can be overwhelming at times. That is not necessarily a bad thing but for a newbie, it can be daunting."
"I cannot evaluate any areas for improvement at this time."
"There were issues due to the databases connectivity."
"Reverse engineering the physical schema is complex and can be made easier."
"Many users don't know how to add licensing to Toad, or where it is shown, so they could make that easier."
"Better documentation would be a benefit."
"Currently, with Windows 10, it sometimes would get stuck and stop responding."
"When updating a model after generating a schema, if only a few tables are imported, the tool assumes you want to delete the rest, which is cumbersome."
"Although a lot of people get deceived by the name “Data Analysis”, it has capacity of any enterprise tool, but not to the point of creating multiple pipes in one integrated work-flow, batching the work-flows and running them parallel for data loads."
"It's way overpriced, even if it wasn't the buggy product it has become."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution’s pricing is high."
"I feel the product's pricing is a good value."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is bad and ten is good, I would rate the licensing cost as a seven or eight. It's not too expensive for us."
"I am currently using the trial version, but this solution is definitely worth considering for the price point."
"Pricing is on point, but do your due diligence - not every developer needs the tool."
"The process of licensing could be much simpler, from our experience."
"I use the product's trial version."
"I'm a firm believer that all software is overpriced these days but, comparatively speaking, I think ER/Studio is worth the money."
"Though I'm not involved in the licensing for Toad Data Modeler, I believe it's per user and not cheap."
"Price-wise, the lesser it is, the better it is for me, especially in Egypt. I think that the licensing cost ranges from 1,000 to 9,000. Also, it includes maintenance and support for a year."
