Open-source nature enables seamless cloud management and customer transition
We deploy layer three managed services, and our customers manage layer two services. We combine the two-layer services and deliver them to our customers The open-source nature of OpenStack provides significant value. It allows for three-word cloud management, maintaining a stable customer…

Enables efficient multi-environment cluster deployment and resource management with versatile features
While VMware vSAN is quite comprehensive, if we are running multiple infrastructures, applications, databases, and other elements, having a diagnostic tool to identify the actual problem area, whether application-side or infrastructure-side, would be beneficial. A proper monitoring tool that encompasses both applications and infrastructure would help in quickly resolving issues.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like its integration with GitLab and its simplicity. OpenStack has a lot of third-party libraries that it uses."
"It was a very flexible and scalable solution. It was very useful because we were not dependent on a single vendor's solution. Increasing the number of machines or changing the hardware configuration was very easy."
"The documentation was plentiful and very helpful."
"The solution is stable."
"There are many services that can be directly used which are not available in VMware."
"Rackspace OpenStack is stable and reliable, often compared favorably against other solutions."
"Administrators are very comfortable with the functionality and services OpenStack offers."
"Apart from the main features, I really appreciate OpenStack's microservices architecture and its flexibility for deployment with different tools."
"The most valuable features for us are the ability to scale out the nodes independently, and the flexibility of the nodes. We can put almost any type of server in there with our connectivity and everything works great."
"The most important thing is the simplicity of the product. It is a well-established product with good stability."
"It is more stable now than it was before. It's not like it was in the first year. Now it is stable, and we trust it more."
"Very easy to implement in any existing environment."
"Allows us to implement more quickly, and to ease the maintenance."
"It is easy to work with, easy to handle, and easy to manage."
"The most valuable feature is that it is software-defined storage. Also, being able to do maintenance on the fly is a real benefit: migrating off, updating, and then moving the guest back on to the nodes."
"vSAN has just one datastore. so customers do not need to think where to put their VMs, how to design the physical disk RAID, the LUN size, the LUN mapping, etc. when they use NetApp/EMC/HDS or other storage systems."

Cons

"The pricing of Rackspace is quite high in the Vietnam market."
"The deployment process could be easy."
"OpenStack is difficult for the novice in terms of beginning to use cloud tools."
"VMware has a side-to-side replication feature, which is still more mature than Rackspace OpenStack's which can't be used in a production environment."
"The pricing of Rackspace is quite high in the Vietnam market."
"The seamless integration between MySQL services and the rabbitMQ database can be revised during the debugging phase."
"It should have a single dashboard for cloud management and on-premises systems"
"The line migration is a problem."
"The pricing could be better when it comes to renewing the licenses."
"I would like to see better integration between the cloud and our VMware virtual environment. We only have one virtual environment, which is VMware vSAN. Right now, there is little interoperability with the cloud solution at the moment."
"We have encountered some challenges related to administrative tasks and licensing issues for the product."
"It can be very expensive."
"We would really like them to look at what Nutanix did for day-one/day-two operations deployment: Bringing in the equipment, getting it deployed, getting it setup, and ease of use of one-click for deploying our 30-node solution. With vSAN we had to go into each one individually and set it up."
"I would like to see better performance graphs, maybe something that you can export outside to a different console, and maybe a little bit longer time period. The 18-hour maximum, or 24-hour maximum, is kind of short. Also, the hardware compatibility limitations are a little frustrating sometimes, but as everybody's starting to adopt vSAN more, you get more options for hardware."
"As no product is 100% perfect, the price for VMware vSAN could still be improved, though it is good when compared to some of its competitors."
"The pricing model is sometimes a challenge for us because their licenses are very costly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use it as an open-source tool."
"The pricing is low."
"I feel the pricing to be reasonable."
"The price is expensive."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"It is too expensive."
"The price of the solution package depends on the nodes and other factors. The cost some of our customers paid was $500,000. The licensing cost for the components is very good."
"The vSAN licensing is not an inexpensive product. It does cost more than hypervisor."
"I have been told that if I used VxRail it would be cheaper than the system we are using now with buying the products separately. The solution is expensive overall."
"The product is quite expensive, regarding the open source solution."
