Manager, SAP Practice at a computer software company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Has consistently provided impressive data handling capabilities and robust security features
Some of the most valuable features of SAP Data Services include data extraction where SAP is the best in that perspective, but when it comes to analytics or the reporting tool, I prefer to connect with Microsoft Power BI, which is a fantastic tool. Typically, from an end-user perspective, SAP has a huge amount of data, in terms of terabytes of data, but when you analyze that, the best form of visualization is always through Microsoft Power BI. SAP Data Services provides a best-in-class return on investment, as SAP's vision and forecast are absolutely amazing. They are ahead of technology, building an ecosystem that meets the standards of the fast-changing digital economy. SAP is indeed good at all this now, with so many components such as SAP Signavio, SAP EINS, SAP Work Zone, SAP ALM, Cloud ALM, SAP public cloud, SAP private cloud, and BTP, all of which are essential to meet the latest cutting-edge technologies.

Efficient data lake storage and ingestion engines with room for automation improvement
While functional during ingestion workflows, the automation toolkit required manual processes. Challenges included identifying how to get users to store data appropriately and segregating files for long-term storage. Attaching the appropriate metadata to files was not straightforward since it wasn't part of a traditional user workflow. Some connectors for specific instruments were difficult to work with and weren't available out of the box.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The development is faster than SSIS or Talend."
"SAP Data Services has been around for a while and still performs its job well; it remains a fast data-moving tool, faster than most new ones."
"The basic functionality is quite good as is the basic logic and data information."
"It helps our organization and our clients achieve its goals and objectives by having the right information at the right time and at the right people."
"SAP Data Services provides a best-in-class return on investment, as SAP's vision and forecast are absolutely amazing."
"The feature of SAP Data Services has enhanced our company's business processes because we are able to run around 800 jobs in areas like data extraction and transaction objects."
"Once you have training on the solution, it is very important to explore the full potential of the product rather than jumping right into development."
"Having different ways of extracting data has been very useful; we can extract data at a table level, extract data at the ETL level, and we can extract data at an ODP level."
"The ingestion engines were pretty good."
"The crawler agents they provide, as well as TetraScience exclusive parsers, allow for specific instruments that we use in our labs with proprietary formats to extract data and put it into more standard formats for various purposes."

Cons

"I want some more business intelligence applications. People need to know more and more about data, including the transformation rules, etc. Informatica is a better product for data cataloging. SAP should update the data catalog."
"The initial setup is complex. It takes time to get used to."
"Technical Support: Needs improvement as far as responsiveness."
"The skillset of data engineers matters a bit to use all the functionality of this solution. Otherwise, the delivery speed won't be faster."
"There are still a lot of glitches with SAP Data Services as of now."
"There needs to be multi-language support, however, my understanding is they are working on multi-language now."
"We encounter challenges while exporting implemented rules, such as those applied to objects like the material master, into a format like Excel for documentation and further analysis."
"The interface is not quite user-friendly and is in need of improvement."
"The application has a difficult-to-use parsing capability, which requires a lot of reengineering when the use case isn't specifically met."
"While functional during ingestion workflows, the automation toolkit required manual processes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Speaking about prices, Oracle and SAP are market leaders. So, the prices are more."
"Pricing is good, there is no problem."
"The license price is expensive but medium to large-scale companies, should be able to afford it. Other solutions, such as Talend are easier to afford for smaller companies. Depending on the sources of the data where you are receiving your data you could be paying for more than one license."
"At the entry level, if you're using it only for data integration, it is a little bit cheap. However, for large organizations it can be expensive. There are additional costs apart from the license."
"The pricing is a little high to make the product more competetive in the marketplace."
"I rate the product price as one or two on a scale of one to ten, where one is a low price, and ten is a high price."
"The price of SAP Data Services is a little high when compared to other solutions. Due to the pricing and capabilities, many clients are switching to other solutions."
"The enterprise version of SAP Data Services is free."
