There is progress in performance and stability, but further advancements are needed for end-user satisfaction
VMware Cloud Foundation's best features include its advanced capabilities, security purposes, and performance levels. The solution offers efficient licensing options. Previously, vSphere essential was available, but now it has moved to VMware Cloud Foundation 8.0. It includes advanced features such as lifecycle manager, patching level, and cluster level patching options. The solution now offers auto-deployment of VMs. Previously, I had to use the content library, right-click, and create VMs manually. With VMware Cloud Foundation, auto-deployment is possible by simply right-clicking and assigning a specific DHCP IP, enabling physical to vCenter level communication for automatic VM deployment. The workload portability feature in VMware Cloud Foundation provides good workload balance. For instance, in a cluster level with four to five ESXi hosts, each host has minimum resources allocated for CPU and memory, resulting in significantly reduced utilization at the VMware Cloud Foundation level.

Consolidated data centers and improved backup and disaster recovery performance
The main point for improvement in VMware Cloud on AWS is the technical support. As for additional features, currently, to perform any automation, a subscription to Aria Operations is required, but that feature is being removed from VMware Cloud on AWS. I would prefer if essential automation functionalities were included directly within VMware Cloud on AWS rather than needing an additional subscription. Additionally, on the cost aspect, it would be beneficial to have ready-made reports for chargebacks against departments or projects without extensive analysis of compute, memory, and storage. When it comes to storage, a significant portion is reserved for management purposes, limiting usable storage. Following RAID configuration, we only have about 40% available for actual workload consumption. Consequently, estimating costs associated with storage becomes challenging. In summary, we need better price management, capacity management, and availability reporting in VMware Cloud on AWS. Currently, I rely on third-party tools for notifications, but such features should be readily available within VMware Cloud on AWS to ease the workload for administrators or operation heads.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"VMware Cloud Foundation allows for extensive customization, aligning with our customer requirements."
"The main features are the separation between the management plane and the workload. You can use NSX to provision between the different areas of the network, like west-east or north-south."
"The solution is very stable, the scalability is good, technical support is helpful, and the initial setup is easy and doesn't take much manpower."
"The initial setup is straightforward and easy."
"Overall, I rate VMware Cloud Foundation a nine out of ten."
"VMware Cloud Foundation's most valuable features are password and certificate management. The SDDC manager tool is the front tool we are using to manage the entire VCF stack. In the SDDC manager, we can able to rotate, and update the passwords of all users. Anything in the VMware portfolio, we can manage from a single dashboard and we have various data centers. We have connected everything into one Federation. From one single place, we are managing our entire virtual interactions."
"Amongst everything that's out there, I would rate the product a nine out of ten."
"VMware Cloud Foundation makes it easy to set up new environments. You get hosts in a pool, which you can build into a new cluster."
"A backup of one core application that previously took seven to eight hours now completes within one to one and a half hours after migrating to VMware Cloud on AWS."
"The initial setup process is straightforward."
"It's a private solution, mainly. But with VMware on AWS, the best part is the ease of migration from VMware to VMware."

Cons

"The documentation could be easier to read."
"An improvement needed is an upgrade to make it more scalable and automated, so that it can be easier to navigate within the cloud and the Kubernetes and vSphere, enabling VMware Cloud Foundation to deliver a more scalable hybrid cloud and manage the lifecycle between the management and Kubernetes section."
"The price could be better. VMware Cloud Foundation is overpriced, but I think we get what we pay for. It would be better if it were cheaper because it would be easier to go to customers and get them to buy it. We'd get more projects, and that would be great."
"The customization has room for improvement."
"If one component fails to operate in a timely manner, the entire infrastructure can go down because everything is interconnected. This is the biggest issue."
"The pricing could be a bit less expensive."
"The maintenance cost has increased significantly, especially after Broadcom acquired VMware, with a shift from socket-based licensing to core-based licensing."
"Integrations are slightly difficult, as getting resources to deal with it is not that easy."
"The platform's cost could be reduced."
"There is one thing for improvement. To connect with VMware Cloud on AWS, you need to connect via some sort of IPS. Previously, there were no IPS features available."
"The main point for improvement in VMware Cloud on AWS is the technical support."
