The solution is primarily used to manage the inventory of hardware and to scan for firmware packages that have not been updated. This helps customers to anticipate potential problems with the hardware by not doing patches. We also use it in network management to view and manage all network devices, with a focus on servers and some storage solutions. We primarily work with industries like government.
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
It has helped by improving management and enabling anticipation of potential problems that we might solve in terms of time, such as issues with Dell server versions or firmware updates.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the ability to manage the entire inventory of the data center, even if they are not Dell products. Another key aspect is integrating OpenManage with ProSupport and SecureConnect Gateway for proactive case management.
What needs improvement?
The solution could improve in its integration with digitalization solutions and Kubernetes releases, like SUSE Rancher and Red Hat OpenShift.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using OpenManage for approximately seven or eight years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product has become more reliable than in the past, and I would rate its stability as eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We haven't scaled the solution much since the integrations we use are generally quite small, managing up to 50 servers. Scaling beyond this hasn't been necessary.
How are customer service and support?
We haven't had to raise support tickets often. Initially, we try to solve issues using the knowledge base. Our experience with Dell's customer service has been positive, though sometimes there are delays in response. Overall, it would be rated eight to ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
At this company, we haven't used another data center tool before OpenManage. In one instance, we encountered Tivoli with a customer.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup involved deploying the database, however, now it is easier with the ODA appliance. It requires one to three steps for basic setup and additional time for infrastructure integration.
What about the implementation team?
Implementation typically involves one or two people, generally our services engineer and someone who assists them.
What was our ROI?
We haven't assessed the return on investment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The main advantage is that OpenManage is a free tool unless additional software packages are integrated, which require payment. We usually install the free solution provided by Dell.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
In two cases, we installed a German solution, but the name of the solution is not recalled as it was installed several years ago. We faced difficulties with licensing acquisition and lack of local partners.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend OpenManage because it integrates with other hardware vendors, allowing management of simple elements of infrastructure without needing to purchase licenses. It is cost-effective for managing infrastructure.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
