We use it to manage our DHCP servers and DNS and to gain more insightful information on what is on the network.
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
I can better see what is in the scope, especially what is there and what needs a reservation, allowing me to tidy up my scope effectively.
We do not use the API, but for DNS and DHCP, it unifies the management. Changes are faster because we can find the information better, especially if something is not known to us in the IT department. We can find the information faster. It saves time and gives us more insights into information.
We were able to realize its benefits immediately.
What is most valuable?
The manageability is a standout feature. I have one console for DHCP and DNS. It allows me to easily make changes, especially in the IPAM module. I can easily make reservations in the HEP and change reservations, which is not possible with Microsoft management.
The management console of Microsoft did not give good management options. We now have one console. We can also see which IP addresses were given in the past. It is more convenient.
I could learn it very fast. I did not have any training. We did a PoC with BlueCat, and during the PoC, I learned the things I needed.
What needs improvement?
In the web version, I cannot change the IP addresses in the reservation, whereas in the app version, I can. It is a feature I would like to see available in the web version.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used the solution for about half a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable. I have not had any issues with it so far. I would rate it a ten out of ten for stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have not changed the number of servers, but I would rate its scalability an eight out of ten.
We have three locations at our school, but we have one big network. It is managed only from one side. We manage it with two people. Our school has about 3,000 users including teachers, staff, and students. We have about 1,700 devices.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate them a nine out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using Microsoft management. The main reason for switching was the need for more insight and information about the network. The management has become easier.
As compared to Windows DNS, Micetro is a bit easier because you have more information, and it is presented better.
How was the initial setup?
I tried it first for an hour or so, but I misread the instructions. I called BlueCat Networks. After that, in one and a half hours, it was up and running. A week later, we had another call, and we added some things. The complete installation and configuration took two hours.
The installation of Micetro was non-disruptive to our environment. That was the reason why we chose Micetro. We did not have to change anything.
It requires a little bit of maintenance. We have two people for maintenance, but until now, I have done all the maintenance. The updates were very simple. I made a snapshot of the virtual machine, and after that, I ran the update. Until now, it has all gone perfectly.
What about the implementation team?
I started myself. I misread one thing, so they helped me. After that, it was very simple.
I carried out the installation and configuration myself. My colleague reviewed the product and acknowledged the calls but did not participate in the installation.
What was our ROI?
It is challenging to quantify, but comparing it to the old Microsoft management, it has reduced my management time by half.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
As a school, we received a special price. It is more expensive after being taken over by BlueCat but not prohibitively so. The product simplifies life, and the license is not very pricey.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Micetro because it is easy to operate. In larger teams, different roles can be assigned to people. It is easy to maintain and provides much more inside information about what's on your network.
I would rate Micetro a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
