Building a comprehensive data market with robust policies while facing cost clarity challenges
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important aspect is our vision to create a data marketplace and Data Governance policies."
  • "There should be more clarity about the costing, particularly how the cost is calculated, especially when utilizing health reports and quality features."

What is our primary use case?

I am currently building a data catalog for all the structured and unstructured data at TPR, Pension Regulator. We are applying the sensitivity labeling, the data loss prevention, and about DPSM for AI within Data Governance structure. Additionally, we are building and applying the data ownership framework, which is the backbone of Data Governance program we are launching.

What is most valuable?

The most important aspect is our vision to create a data marketplace and Data Governance policies. AI is the focus, and the ultimate vision is to make the data ready for AI. Data quality features in Microsoft Purview Data Governance, like profiling and data health mapping, help us understand data quality and create our own data quality rules. Data Governance's unified catalog, data mapping, and strong scanning capabilities help us identify sensitive data, apply protection and DLP policies. The support for connecting Power BI to Microsoft Purview Data Governance for data lineage is impressive as well.

What needs improvement?

There should be more clarity about the costing, particularly how the cost is calculated, especially when utilizing health reports and quality features. Additionally, adding more tools around data quality would be beneficial, particularly in the context of AI, where data quality is crucial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it for almost one year now. Initially, I reviewed it and wanted to start processing on it when it was launched, but I have been hands-on with everything from the last year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The deployment experience involved complexity due to a lack of internal experts. It took almost twenty days to connect the physical server to Microsoft Purview Data Governance and complete the deployment. However, with proper IT expertise, deployment can be straightforward and quick, taking only a day or two to connect with infrastructure.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft Purview Data Governance is absolutely fine in terms of stability. However, as it is a new tool, it's all open to various experiences. With time, I will better understand its success and stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Microsoft Purview Data Governance is very scalable. It allows for one-to-one connections with different types of servers, either cloud-based like AWS, or physical servers. I can manage different servers with varying solutions and policies, providing ease of scalability.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Microsoft is good. I have a dedicated team as a government agency, and Microsoft assists us promptly. The community support also answers queries efficiently. However, it can take time to receive solutions due to the complexity and constantly evolving nature of the tool.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have explored other market solutions like Informatica, Harbor, and Xenia, assessing their options, costs, and functionality. While these tools offered valuable features, Microsoft Purview Data Governance stood out for its comprehensive range of features and the ability to be used as an all-in-one solution without needing additional tools for data governance.

How was the initial setup?

Connecting the physical server to Microsoft Purview Data Governance took nearly twenty days initially, with integrated runtime and virtual machine setup. For organizations with proper IT expertise, setup could be a straightforward task completed in one or two days by following clear documentation.

What about the implementation team?

I took assistance from the IT team for integration runtime and virtual machine setup. After this foundation was laid, I connected the data servers, built the catalog, curated data, and constructed governance modules independently.

What was our ROI?

The return on investment has not been calculated yet as it is still early in the implementation phase. The plan is to create demand and supply and make data discovery available to most team members.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Microsoft Purview Data Governance is quite affordable compared to other market solutions, which have high initial costs. It allows for a cost-effective start with negligible initial cost. However, ongoing costs, especially when utilizing advanced functionalities like health and quality reports in Microsoft Purview Data Governance, require more clarity.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated tools like Informatica, Harbor, and Xenia, assessing their marketplace availability and features. These solutions offer various cataloging features, but Microsoft Purview Data Governance provides a more integrated solution for data governance, including data security and loss prevention, making it preferable.

What other advice do I have?

If you are looking for an end-to-end solution to make your data AI-ready, start utilizing Microsoft Purview Data Governance. Define clear business goals and quality standards for your Data Governance framework. Despite the complexity and changes in newer features, it shows promise as a critical tool for data governance.
