Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of Oracle Application Express (APEX) are the ease and speed of development. Instead of engaging a large team of middleware, front-end, and database engineers, we can have professional look at the front end and have the user interface up and running in a matter of days. However, if you want to go far and implement very custom features, it doesn't require a lot of knowledge of front-end development, such as HTML, JavaScript, or other aspects."

What is our primary use case?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) can be used for anything which requires quick creation of a user interface with user interaction with a database. Sometimes it's used more for reporting, but in many cases, it's for interactive reporting or interactions with the tool to record dates in the database. For example, it can be used for internal use within the company for the testing team to conveniently add test cases. Additionally, it can be used for comprehensive reporting for the financial teams, they can perform some work related to revenue recognition.

I didn't work with big projects exposed to the public, the use cases were mostly internal platform projects.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Application Express (APEX) for approximately 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Oracle Application Express (APEX) is 100 percent. It is highly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is highly scalable and can serve up to a required number of users. However, I do not have experience with serving more than approximately100 users. I'm always advertising this tool as being scalable. Bring in the shop.oracle.com as an example, because that site is running on Oracle Application Express (APEX), and you can imagine it can serve up to an unlimited number of users. With good hardware behind the solution, it's scalable, but since I don't have direct experience, I'm pretty sure it's scalable to any possible level. My confidence level in that is 90 percent scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have not had the need to contact technical support because of the number of resources and amount of information available with only a couple of mouse clicks, such as documentation, Q&A, and FAQ, they have a lot of material available. I know that browsing those websites people sometimes face some issues with not having their issue resolved, but this has not been my experience.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) comes with Oracle. The Oracle price itself. I do not know the exact cost. Oracle is flexible on its price. If you overspend on your hardware, then I don't think you will overpay. I heard that Oracle is more expensive than other databases, but when you consider Oracle is the best traditional relational database out there. You get what you pay for.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Oracle Application Express (APEX) a nine out of ten.

You don't need to know how to code because APEX does all of the the coding in the backend, but other solutions have features that APEX doesn't have
    Pros and Cons
    • "You don't have to know a lot of PL because it's built on PL/SQL. You don't need developers. You only need to design a good application that resolves a problem, or many problems, for companies and you're ready to go."
    • "Maybe there are other technologies that offer what APEX cannot."

What is our primary use case?

I have it installed in my computer, and I'm trying to build some GL applications for independent consulting just to track expenses.

APEX is putting a lot of money into the new versions and giving new features to people like coding and building applications. I believe they're on version 21 now. I worked on their product a lot, and I did a mini project to implement Oracle applications. I have done many projects in three continents, like Africa, Europe, and now in North America.

    What is most valuable?

You don't have to know a lot of PL because it's built on PL/SQL. You don't need developers. You only need to design a good application that resolves a problem, or many problems, for companies and you're ready to go. When you design it, you just need to understand how the tools work, and it's almost drag and drop. APEX does all of the coding in the backend. You don't have to know how to code PL/SQL or CSS or HTML.

A lot of times I ask my clients why they don't use APEX. They have the Oracle database and it's free, so why don't they use it to build this application? They go to Grails or inside development with many developers. I never understood why they couldn't just use APEX to build their own applications. The solution is free, and you're building something inside the house and you have the people that can design your application. They use other technologies on top of Oracle.

    What needs improvement?

Maybe some people go with other technologies because they are more familiar with them. Oracle probably needs more communication about APEX and to show people that they have something free on their hands and that they need to give it a chance.

Maybe there are other technologies that offer what APEX cannot. Oracle is working hard on APEX to put it more on the cloud, so it is more useful for people that know how to code.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    APEX is a stable solution.

    How was the initial setup?

I don't see it as complex, but not many people have that kind of skill.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

    The solution is free.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 7 out of 10.

The only advice I can give is to just try it and give it a chance.

Rapid deployment, good support, and highly scalable
    Pros and Cons
    • "Oracle Application Express is easy to use, people don't have to be developers to use it."
    • "Some of the application interfaces of Oracle Application Express are not very attractive and could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are using one application developed in APEX for COVID information control, and all our employees are reporting the symptoms.

    What is most valuable?

Oracle Application Express is easy to use, people don't have to be developers to use it.

    What needs improvement?

Some of the application interfaces of Oracle Application Express are not very attractive and could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Application Express for approximately two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Application Express is highly scalable. We are running it on Oracle RAC with a 60-terabyte database and we dedicate one schema for the user databases. In the database, we are running Oracle Business Suite and APEX, it is running very well.

We have approximately 1,000 people using this solution in my organization. Many of them are analysts and business users.

We plan to increase the usage of the solution.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support has been good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously were using Java deployments, but it was difficult to maintain standards for the applications. We are using, access development desktop databases. Every department used different people for the applications and different standards.

    How was the initial setup?

The installation is simple and the time it took was approximately two weeks.

    What about the implementation team?

I did the implementation of the solution myself.

We have approximately three technicians and two engineers that do the maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have an Oracle basic product license, and then we can use Oracle APEX for free. We have many licenses for Oracle for approximately 20 processors.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have evaluated other options before choosing Oracle Application Express.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle Application Express it's a very good solution for many use cases. It can be deployed rapidly and I highly recommend it for the replacement of users' databases, such as Access.

I rate Oracle Application Express a nine out of ten.

Shortens the development cycle, enabling faster delivery to the customer
    Pros and Cons
    • "Oracle APEX improved our organization by making it possible for us to implement agile project development."
    • "Currently, APEX doesn't have a building workflow engine. I think that's the most important improvement that could be made at this point."

What is our primary use case?

Right now, we have two primary use cases for this solution. We are using Oracle APEX to build full-customized ERP systems for big companies and also for small and medium-sized enterprises.

How has it helped my organization?

Oracle APEX improved our organization by making it possible for us to implement agile project development. A key agile feature is shortening the development cycle, enabling faster delivery to the customer. It enables us to deliver a complete system to the customer more quickly. The customer can use a system and provide us with feedback. We then implement changes and enhance the system as part of second development cycle.

If we were using a different tool, it would take us maybe three months to deliver a development cycle. With APEX, we're able to deliver in less than a month.

    What is most valuable?

What I find the most valuable about Oracle APEX is that it is very fast.

Prior to Oracle APEX, we were using Oracle Developer/2000, or D2K for short. It's another RAD. RAD refers to rapid application development tool. These two tools are quite similar. So, they are very easy for us to migrate.

That's why we choose Oracle APEX. It is a very powerful tool. It has a lot of function and a lot of features that were not available in D2K. D2K is not available on mobile, for example. Oracle APEX is very convenient.

    What needs improvement?

    1. Need more backup options, such as more than 25 backups, option for choosing what conditions to trigger the backup action, etc.

    2. If APEX could add the workflow engine feature, that will be awesome.

    3. If there could be a kind of chart to make the link graphics between the parent nodes and the child nodes, (currently there is a Tree feature), but sometimes the hierarchy is not only one-to-many, could be many-to-one, or many-to-many.

    4. More mobile-friendly UI features will make APEX more powerful and engaging.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since 2015.

How are customer service and technical support?

We do not use Oracle paid support. We use community support.

The Oracle Community is not paid support but it is very powerful. It's a great community, made up of very intelligent and enthusiastic people.

    How was the initial setup?

I consider the initial setup simple compared to other technology.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle APEX significantly reduces the effort that needs to be put into development, allowing us to focus more on system analysis.

A low-code solution for testing applications and has easy maintenance
    Pros and Cons
    • "Oracle is always adding very important updates"
    • "The solution could provide more AI functionalities or AI assistance."

What is our primary use case?

It is a no-code or low-code solution for testing applications. It helps me build and test an application quickly.

How has it helped my organization?

    It makes life easy.

    What is most valuable?

Oracle is always adding very important updates.

    What needs improvement?

The solution could provide more AI functionalities or AI assistance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Application Express (APEX) since 2016.

    How was the initial setup?

It keeps getting more flexible. As new releases come out, the setup process becomes easier. If we’re discussing Apex in the cloud, there's essentially nothing to worry about regarding setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are using a free-tier version of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

It is relatively easy to maintenance compared to other tools that we work with.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Powerful, feature-rich, and lets you modernize forms more quickly; it has a good PWA feature
    Pros and Cons
    • "I like that Oracle Application Express (APEX) is powerful and attractive, allowing my organization to modernize forms within two months. I also found its PWA feature very powerful because you can produce substantial mobile applications."
    • "Source control could be stronger in Oracle Application Express (APEX). It needs some work."

What is our primary use case?

I'm using Oracle Application Express (APEX) to build a huge application. I'm in the biggest ministry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and I migrate all the old forms from Oracle Forms 6 to Oracle Application Express (APEX).

    What is most valuable?

I like that Oracle Application Express (APEX)has proven itself as a product. It's powerful and attractive, and it allowed my organization to modernize forms within two months, and I'm talking about one thousand five hundred forms.

The ministry here is very impressed with Oracle Application Express (APEX) that it decided to switch to the solution and that even .NET, Java, and Vega will use Oracle Application Express (APEX) versus other solutions.

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a good platform; others cannot compare to it, especially regarding support, performance, and productivity.

What I found most valuable in the solution is its IDE Cloud because you don't need to do installations in the machines, and you don't need huge specifications.

I also found the PWA feature of Oracle Application Express (APEX) very powerful because you can produce substantial mobile applications, and it's as simple as clicking the built-in authentication, single sign-on LDAP (Active Directory). Because of the built-in features of Oracle Application Express (APEX), it's fantastic.

The solution is feature-rich, and it usually takes months to produce web services, especially group services in .NET or Vega. Still, with Oracle Application Express (APEX), it only takes a few hours, which is a significant improvement for the government here.

Oracle has yearly releases for this solution, three releases a year, so I'm delighted, and I'm expecting more features to be added to Oracle Application Express (APEX) in the future. Right now, it has all the capabilities my organization needs. The solution even lets you build your templates, UI/UX-wise, so I'm working on a project where I make my own UI/UX and theme faster through Oracle Application Express (APEX).

    What needs improvement?

I'm satisfied with Oracle Application Express (APEX), but it needs to work on its source control, which is very important. Currently, source control is not as strong in the solution, so it needs some work.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle Application Express (APEX) since 2003.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a very mature, stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As Oracle powers Oracle Application Express (APEX), it has high availability and scalability. It has everything you don't usually find in other solutions.

How are customer service and support?

I don't need to contact Oracle Application Express (APEX) technical support because it's a very mature solution. I'm also a leader who knows everything about Oracle Application Express (APEX). My team builds huge applications and has a case management system and a project management module on top of Oracle Application Express (APEX). I've produced many applications using the solution, so my team and I can handle technical issues, if any. The user experience and interface for Oracle Application Express (APEX) are also good, so I don't need support from Oracle.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Oracle Application Express (APEX) is fantastic because you can install or deploy it from the top through Amazon RDS or  CAD. You can deploy the solution quickly. I currently have a project with the ministry to roll out Oracle Application Express (APEX) for fifty-four pluggable databases.

Setting up the solution is smooth, and there's no downtime during deployment. I found its setup excellent.

Deploying Oracle Application Express (APEX) requires taking care of the packages on the databases, as well as publication. It's straightforward.

    What about the implementation team?

I'm working on a massive project, so I have a team responsible for implementing Oracle Application Express (APEX). My team is working on making the process more systematic, where you don't need a human. There'll be an engine that takes care of the whole process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is free, so this is another magic of the solution. You just get charged for the database license, which I don't need.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an expert on Oracle Application Express (APEX).

I'm working with the latest Oracle Application Express (APEX) release.

I have many Oracle Application Express (APEX) projects, with one project deployed on-premises, and another on the cloud, using an autonomous database.

Two people work on the Oracle Application Express (APEX) deployment, which is the magic of this solution because it only requires two people to deploy on a massive project, even with hundreds of CRs. The deployment process is smooth.

Compared to Oracle Forms, Oracle Application Express (APEX) requires eighty percent less maintenance.

The ministry has seven thousand concurrent users working with the solution, with one hundred thousand transactions daily and about sixty thousand reports printed daily.

I would recommend Oracle Application Express (APEX) to others looking into using it one hundred percent. I'd tell you not to go with other tools because there's no comparison between Oracle Application Express (APEX) and its competitors. I have twenty years of experience in development, and I've worked on Java, .NET, Oracle forms, Vega, and low-code developments. I hardly have to work when using Oracle Application Express (APEX). My advice is to choose it over others.

I'm giving Oracle Application Express (APEX) a perfect score of ten. I'm giving it a hundred percent rating.

Connection is quick and simple, but stability could be improved and installation could be simplified
    Pros and Cons
    • "A user interface is relatively simple to create."
    • "It would be beneficial to include WebSockets so that you can see real-time updates."

What is our primary use case?

We develop software for local governments as well as software licensing.

We look after the local government and Healthcare.

    What is most valuable?

A user interface is relatively simple to create.

I can easily connect to the servers. It has a fast connection.

    What needs improvement?

Making a CI/CD lane for it is a bit difficult.

It is difficult to achieve continuous delivery or continuous integration.

Stability and technical support could be enhanced.

It would be beneficial to include WebSockets so that you can see real-time updates.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Oracle Application Express (APEX) for three years.

We are not using the most recent version, but we are close.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is not very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a scalable product.

This solution is used by ten developers or technical consultants in our company.

We may increase our usage in the future.

How are customer service and support?

I had a technical issue, and it took me a month to get an answer from Oracle.

    Response time is very slow.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I work with multiple solutions simultaneously.

    How was the initial setup?

We have people who surf the servers on our behalf. They are simply regular Windows computers, but not in our location, but in another. Similar to a cloud.

We have several small cloud providers. They are based in the Netherlands.

It is rather complex to install.

I would rate the installation a three out of five.

It took approximately, one day to deploy.

We need two developers to maintain this solution.

    What about the implementation team?

Our in-house team completed the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I believe it is free, but the Oracle database license must be purchased.

It is expensive, but I don't know what the licensing cost is.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did not consider alternative solutions. This solution was already chosen and in place when I started at this company.

What other advice do I have?

It all depends on the solutions you seek. But, yes, I would probably recommend this solution to others.

I would rate Oracle Application Express (APEX) a six out of ten. The idea of the product is good, but there are issues that make it difficult to work with.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Works like a rapid application development concept so it's a big time saver for clients
    Pros and Cons
    • "Efficient software delivery and a solution that works quickly."
    • "Reporting needs to be accessed via third party tools."

What is our primary use case?

Our company developed several health care portals where patients can go and find doctors and things like that. We are now testing whether we can shift a few things from the previous alignment tool which is managed by our data service team. We work on small projects and have around 50 users. We're customers of Oracle and I'm an EHR implementation specialist.

    What is most valuable?

This solution is like a rapid application development concept. Given that it's all about time and everything happens within a much shorter time span, it makes for efficient software delivery and a good product. If the client is happy, I'm happy.

    What needs improvement?

I think Apex is like many similar tools that are currently available. If you want specific reports, you have to implement third party tools. It would make a big difference if the reporting was included in the product so that we wouldn't need to get it from third parties.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for 18 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Apex is still evolving and we initially had scalability issues. You can't make large applications with the limitations we had, but you can make small apps really fast, if you have the extra backup.

How are customer service and technical support?

We haven't had to use technical support, we track our own flow.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was a little complex. You have to run some steps on it. That said, deployment took maybe an hour or two. We have minimal maintenance requirements. If there's an issue you just look back at the cache but most of the time it's okay.

What other advice do I have?

Apex is a great tool, you can use it for your regular business affairs and it's a very productive solution with great features. I really appreciate the people who created it.
