Our customers use the solution for multiple purposes. Some users use it as a core firewall to protect their servers. Some users use it as a parameter edge to terminate the VPN connection and to connect with their remote site.
Senior Network Security Engineer at a computer software company with 11-50 employees
An efficient and easy-to-manage solution that can be used as a core firewall to protect servers
Pros and Cons
- "The solution is easy to manage."
- "Compared to other vendors, the solution's community should be strong enough to solve the problems engineers face."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The way Palo Alto Networks PA-Series works is completely different compared to other firewalls. The solution is very efficient when it comes to resource usage. We can use multiple processes at a single time. The solution is easy to manage. The most important feature of the solution I like is the reporting. If you want to check your data or traffic usage, you can export it in multiple formats.
What needs improvement?
Compared to other vendors, the solution's community should be strong enough to solve the problems engineers face. If I face any issue, I should be able to Google it and find the solution to rectify it. If one customer has no premium support, he cannot open a case with the portal. He should at least find some help or support from the community.
For how long have I used the solution?
I work as a system integrator and have provided Palo Alto Networks PA-Series to customers for three to four years.

The solution is a next-generation firewall that provides good security features
Pros and Cons
- "The solution provides good customer support."
- "The solution’s pricing could be improved because it is an expensive solution."
What is our primary use case?
Palo Alto Networks PA-Series is the Gartner leader product for the next-generation firewall. The solution's security features and managing issues are very user-friendly. The solution has two panels: one is the management panel, and the other is the data panel. If I have the maintenance on the data panel, the data panel will not be impacted. The management panel has different modules. The solution provides all the security features in a competitive world.
What is most valuable?
The solution provides good customer support.

They have the management console and management code. I put the management IP on the firewall and logged in to the GUI console. After that, I connect the management code in our management network from my office network. Then, I connect to the insight port, outside port, and other zones. We have created eight zones on that part.
I have finished the initial configuration and installation part within three working days. After that, there are many issues with fine-tuning and policymaking, and it goes through step by step in the operational part.
What other advice do I have?
Since Palo Alto Networks PA-Series is a very expensive solution, rich customers like banks, financial organizations, and telecom companies prefer the solution.
Overall, I rate Palo Alto Networks PA-Series nine and a half out of ten.

Lead Frontend And Mobile Developer at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
A stable solution to secure network with great customer support
Pros and Cons
- "It is stable when you set up something and put it into production. Once it works, you don't have other tasks or actions to perform."
- "Currently, they are not protected with any data security when they work from home or outside the network. They surf the Internet directly and should implement a proxy or firewall to monitor the data between the endpoint and the internet."
What is our primary use case?
It is a standard firewall implemented in the company to protect the corporate network from outside networks. We have a VPN for our clients who work from home, protecting all traffic between their network and our network by filtering DNS ordering and all mechanisms to protect us.
What is most valuable?
It is stable when you set up something and put it into production. Once it works, you don't have other tasks or actions to perform. You shouldn't touch anything after you finish the setup correctly. When setup is done properly, it remains stable.
What needs improvement?
There should be an improvement in the protection of endpoint computers when working outside the office. Currently, they are not protected with any data security when they work from home or outside the network. They surf the Internet directly and should implement a proxy or firewall to monitor the data between the endpoint and the Internet.
In future releases, there may be better monitoring and reporting. In the past, there were some situations with vendor utilization where it was sometimes challenging to catch in real-time which user or device was generating excessive traffic, leading to increased utilization. There were some situations where it was easy to catch the source of high utilization through the device. There may be better monitoring or reporting capabilities.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Palo Alto PA Series for about seven years. It is not new to me; we have a lot of experience with this solution.
We have the Palo Alto model 820, which is an appliance device.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution's stability is great. We do not have any issues in the seven years of implementation in production.
I rate the solution's stability a ten out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the solution's scalability an eight out of ten.
For a setup, you must have extensive knowledge of the other services. We have an active directory on-premise, which we like to have as user authentication. It is not just a few clicks and a few steps to configure. You need to put more effort into configuring everything needed for that operation.
There are around 200 people using this solution in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
I have contacted technical support for CentOS two or three times in the last five years.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
We set up the firewall here in three different locations. It's not difficult once you learn what to do during the initial configuration. It is pretty simple.
Moreover, only two-person required for the maintenance of the solution.
What about the implementation team?
I have done most of it myself. On one of the first configurations, I worked with a colleague from college who works for an ISP and has a lot of experience. I work with him on some configurations. After that, I took all the other setups to myself.
There are good guidelines and knowledge available on the web. It just takes time to reach the knowledge base and find what we need. It's not so tough to configure and test any functionality.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
FortiGate has a better price than Palo Alto Networks in the same area. Both have the same set of functions and characteristics, but FortiGate is slightly less expensive. It's better for a small company that doesn't have a big budget for security solutions.
I rate the solution's pricing a one out of ten. The solution is expensive compared to other vendors.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have been searching and researching for endpoint computer solutions for my customers. We already use Palo Alto firewall, but it's no longer sufficient to protect the endpoint computers in our company. Nowadays, most people are traveling and working remotely, so we need a solution that can protect computers regardless of their location.
Whether the computers are at home, on-site, or anywhere else, we need a reliable solution to safeguard them.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

- "The solution's licensing price could be improved."
What is most valuable?
The solution is used for security and IoT security.
What needs improvement?

I have been using Palo Alto Networks PA-Series for the last three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Palo Alto Networks PA-Series a seven out of ten for stability.

The solution's scalability is not very good. Around 300 users use the solution in our organization, and we have plans to increase the usage.
How are customer service and support?
The solution's technical support is good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have also worked with Fortinet and SonicWall.

We have to pay a yearly licensing fee for the solution.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Palo Alto Networks PA-Series to other users.
Overall, I rate Palo Alto Networks PA-Series a seven out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
