ETL, Integration, and Automation are made simple and help us to better understand our data
Pros and Cons
- "This solution has simplified getting to and understanding our data, no matter where it is housed."
- "This solution would be improved with the inclusion of a feature that would allow us to add a common library of (our) commands used in load scripts and expressions, so with a keyword, we would get a drop down to select the command we are looking for, as opposed to the generic help."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
This solution has simplified getting to and understanding our data, no matter where it is housed.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are the ETL, automation, and ease of use by the user population.
What needs improvement?
This solution would be improved with the inclusion of a feature that would allow us to add a common library of (our) commands used in load scripts and expressions, so with a keyword, we would get a drop down to select the command we are looking for, as opposed to the generic help. I keep them all in OneNote now and copy and paste them in, then change the field names. This addition would really save time.
examples:
Convert date-time stamp to just a normal date in the Load script - so we can match to the company calendar for Model Year / month etc , Fiscal Year /month / week of year/ week in year
date(floor(DTTMSTAMP),'MM/DD/YYYY') as TransactionDate,
Storing QVD's: (this is the path needed from a Data Loader)
STORE SummarySalesAggregate INTO [..\QVDData\SummarySalesUnitsAndDollars.qvd];
Sorted and Count for creating Arrays:
SortedAndCounted:
Left join (SummarizeSales2)

it wasn't bad. We did need some consulting advise on the set up in the server...but designing the organization and naming conventions should be up to you. We took the consultants advise and ended up renaming, changing almost everything as far as naming conventions
What about the implementation team?
started with a consultant, didn't use them long.

Very intuitive to business users and executives
Pros and Cons
- "On the positive side, QlikView's scripting is a great asset as it functions as an ETL."
- "If a user wanted to see something not included in the application the new object had to be created by a power user or developer because Qlik view's scripting has somewhat of a learning curve."
I do use both Tableau and QlikView. Although very different, I really like both solutions. They belong to the new BI generation known as Interactive Visual Analytics.
In my opinion, QlikView has a more intuitive interface for regular users or executives that are not technical experts but the development side is a little more complex. Up to version 12 QlikView did not provide drag & drop features.
If a user wanted to see something not included in the application the new object had to be created by a power user or developer because Qlikview's scripting has somewhat of a learning curve.
On the positive side, QlikView's scripting is a great asset as it functions as an ETL allowing the integration of hundreds of different data sources into the same visual app.
Another feature that’s extremely useful is Qlik’s proprietary Associative Model that allows the users to visualize data relationships that exist as well as those that do not.
Tableau on the other hand is a lot easier to use for developers, analysts or power users who need to connect, manipulate and visualize data rather quickly. While this makes Tableau a better fit for the more analytical crowd, it may not be as appealing or intuitive to the regular or casual business users as QlikView is.
Tableau has full pivot, drag & drop and drill down capabilities that are great for developers or power users. They can rotate measures and dimensions and graph them instantly using visualization best practices as suggested by the "show-me" feature.
Tableau’s provides a forecasting function and the capability to connect with the open source statistical program R to include predictive modeling.
Tableau includes a Data Interpreter that makes data cleansing, column splitting and crosstab pivoting very intuitive. Tableau’s latest versions allow joining tables from different data bases and have included the hyper data engine that provides 5 times faster query speeds.
The latest version includes "relationships" with an algorithm that makes
the necessary data connections automatically with no need to perform joins or add Level of Detail scripts (LOD) to eliminate duplicates. However one can still create joins to override relationships if for some reason it was necessary.
Also when opening older files containing joins they are kept under a
"migrated data base" or the migrated joins can be deleted to be replaced with simpler automatic relationships. Tableau releases updated versions once a quarter.
Both Tableau and Qlik continue to be excellent. They are positioned at the top of the leader's quadrant in Gartner's 2022 Magic Quadrant report for BI and Analytics platforms.
https://powerbi.microsoft.com/...
In my experience the choice depends on the fit with the company culture and the users' profile.
Qlik introduction of their new platform called “Qlik Sense” provides intuitive drag & drop functionality to create visualizations. At this point Qlik Sense Desktop is free for personal and small group of cloud business users that need to easily develop analytic applications on their own - with virtually no IT intervention.
Recently Tableau has moved to a subscription based model but still offers free products: Tableau Public and Tableau Reader to ease the user entry process.
It certainly seems like Qlik Sense is an attempt to regain some of the impressive growth Tableau has enjoyed during the last few years playing in the truly self-service visual BI segment.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
Sure thing, Qlik ELT scripting isn't exactly standard programming language. And set analysis, very powerful but also complicated.

Managing Partner at INFOLOJIK
A stable memory-based BI tool that works faster than other tools and can be deployed quickly
Pros and Cons
- "The solution is fast."
- "The tool is expensive in Turkey."
What is our primary use case?
We are a consulting company. Some of my employees use the solution. It is a memory-based BI tool. It works faster than other tools.
What is most valuable?
The solution is fast.
What needs improvement?
The tool is expensive in Turkey.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s stability a ten out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The tool is scalable. We are working with two big corporations in Turkey.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment took less than one day.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The prices were normal five years ago, but they are expensive now. My customers pay a yearly license fee.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Qlik Sense is easier to use than other tools. It is easy to install.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend the product to others. It is expensive only in Turkey. We suggest to our customers, though. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Database Specialist at Zwarthoed IT Solutions
Provides good functionality and a range of reporting to customers
Pros and Cons
- "Easy to analyze data by click-through."
- "The user interface is old."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case of this solution is to provide reporting to our customers. The company works with online solutions for marketing so the customer gets insights about the response to email components and things like that. I'm a freelance database specialist and the company is a customer of QlikView.
How has it helped my organization?
This is a tool with a lot of functionality to provide any kind of reporting to customers, it has a range of solutions. Although some customers would like to use different tools QlikView is what they're used to using.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature for me is probably the ease with which you can analyze data by click-through.
What needs improvement?
The user interface of QlikView is old. The provider built a new tool called Qlik Sense. So Qlik Sense is basically the offspring of QlikView. Somehow both are still supported and they've developed new versions for both of these tools but Qlik Sense is basically the restyled version of QlikView. There's a lot of discussion about some features which are difficult to use including the user interface, all look and feel aspects, but I think that will be in the new version. What they could provide is a migration path to Qlik Sense. It's very difficult to do that automatically because it always requires you to check and change some new port. I haven't researched it but I believe that's the case.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for around six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable but you need to tweak it once you set it up. The big issue with it is that it's a BI tool, so it's memory intensive and for some calculations also CPU intensive. It means that when it hits its maximum in terms of the resources available it starts to shut down.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable but you really have to keep in mind that it's configurable in application so that if you reach the maximum, you know you need to act on that. Otherwise strange things will start to happen. We had that issue one time, we added more memory and since then we haven't had any issues.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have an intermediate company which we bought a license from and it provides us with support. Usually they're not very helpful. Either we find the answer more quickly ourselves, or if we can't find the answer, they usually also can't find the answer. So they have to forward it to the QlikView support. I think it's a waste of money.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment on premises is quite complicated. I did it myself but my predecessor neglected to make proper documentation about installation and the solution requires a lot of components on different servers that talk to each other and you need to set firewall settings and things like that. It's quite a big application. They could improve on that and they probably did that with Qlik Sense. There's a lot of manual stuff required which is not really necessary.
We have about 30 users in the company who are really customers. They access the reporting through a web console which sees it in the mail and some of them are external users who developed on the application. My role is more the maintenance of the application itself. I'm the one who installed it and updates the system. It's difficult to know whether our usage will be increased. This is a difficult year for everyone. If a company has to cut its budget, one of the first things to go is usually marketing.
What other advice do I have?
It's a very good product but I would recommend going for Qlik Sense because it has a better future, given that it's basically the new version of QlikView.
I would rate this solution an eight out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Excellent dashboards for reporting and analytics
Pros and Cons
- "This is a very cool application with endless options of creativity and visuals."
- "I really wish the application was easier to use in the development phase."
What is our primary use case?
My company uses this application mainly for reporting and analytics through customized dashboards that meet corporate identity needs. The reports were created using existing SQL scripts that powered legacy dashboard and reports (i.e. SAP Crystal Reports).
How has it helped my organization?
This is a very cool application with endless options for creativity and visuals.
While this application was loved by the end-users, the development required to build these dashboards proved to be more difficult vs. other solutions such as Tableau.
What is most valuable?
My company is big on dashboards and this application excels in this space. Endless customization is key to meet everyone's needs. I also like how the application can use existing SQL statements to use as your root data/tables/information. Compared to other competitors, this solution can do more.
What needs improvement?
I really wish the application was easier to use in the development phase.
Our business model relies on the business to build their own reports and many departments did not have the associates they need with this type of skill set (i.e. SQL experience). In a business model where a centralized department (i.e. IT) is in control of the reports for the entire company, this would not be a problem.
The development was the ultimate reason this application did not take off in my organization vs. a competitor's application (Tableau). This is a shame as the finished dashboard appeared to be more polished.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for about one year, on and off.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
My experience is limited but from what I experienced, stability is very good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of this solution is very good.
How are customer service and technical support?
Very reactive, quick and supportive.
I have been 110% satisfied every time I have reached out with a question.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We started form SAP Crystal Reports and originally moved to Qlik as a replacement, but this application proved to be more difficult for development as the business owns their own report vs. IT.
How was the initial setup?
Application install was simple and straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented this solution with our in-house IT staff.
What was our ROI?
No ROI as we have moved on.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The biggest comparison was made with Tableau, which ultimately won.
What other advice do I have?
Their training and services have been top-notch and very reactive.

For the first time, they were able to analyze consistent data
What is our primary use case?
I developed an application for a hospital to improve the potential of analysis of that company. I used Windows Server 2008, 8Gb RAM, two processors.
How has it helped my organization?
The hospital improved the quality of the data analysis and increased its profits, because, for the first time, they were able to analyze consistent data.
What is most valuable?
- Speed of development
- Ease of learning
- Low ROI
- Fast deliveries
- Scalability
- Multiplatform, and speed in queries.
What needs improvement?
- Improvement in the graphical user interface
- Introducing HTML 5
- Context sensitive
- Drag and drop visualization
- Responsive design.
For how long have I used the solution?
More than five years.

- "I would want them to have more options as a user. It would be nice for them to create their own dashboards and add fields."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is an application that our users use to get the profitability on a monthly basis.
What is most valuable?
It's pretty easy to deploy.
What needs improvement?
I would want them to have more options as a user. It would be nice for them to create their own dashboards and add fields.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I did not encounter any issues with stability of the product.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I did not encounter any issues with scalability of the product.
How is customer service and technical support?
We usually use a partner for technical support, so I cannot really rate the service.
How was the initial setup?
We had the partner help us set up the product for us. So, I do not remember any difficulty with the setup process.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is not very expensive. I think it it is on par with other similar products on the market.

- Visualization charts
- Pricing
- UI transparency
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The Qlikview is quite stable in comparison to other solutions.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a very good scalable solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
The tech support is strong. The logs of the documents are helpful.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have some prior experience with Power BI and Qlik Sense.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not very complex, it is on a moderate level. If others compare it to other BI tools, they may find it complex. But it was not a problem for us.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is too high compared to the other solutions on the market.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
There are features of QlikView that are not available with Power BI or Tableau. There are activities on the back end that work better in QlikView.
What other advice do I have?
You can do a lot of things at the back end that you cannot do with other competitive solutions.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
