We use this solution for one of our very big customers. We are consultants and I'm the technical specialist and consultant. The company is a customer of SolarWinds.
Technical Specialist, consultant at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
Great connection with management systems for networking devices, applications and servers
Pros and Cons
- "Can easily be interconnected with other management systems."
- "GUI needs improvement with a more graphical dashboard."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
SolarWinds core data is organized in a very good way. The solution can easily be interconnected with other management systems to get information not only from networking devices but also applications and servers.
What needs improvement?
I think the graphical environment, the GUI still has to be improved. Other tools like Power BI provide a more graphical dashboard for executives to show what's going on with operations. SolarWinds has the data but the representation needs to be enhanced for an executive view. It requires a large amount of customization to get to a point where you are able to have something concrete for the upper management team.
For additional features, I'd like to see something more in automations, the graphical interface, and some dynamic dashboards or at least the ability for integration with some dashboard tools.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I think it's a pretty stable solution although we have identified some security gaps around it. I think it's more about managing it correctly and having the security hot fixes and patches up to date. It's generally stable and we haven't had many issues.

How are customer service and support?
Technical support is pretty good, they are very keen to help. There are some options which provide premier support and that enables access to direct SolarWinds support and upgrades.
How was the initial setup?
I think the initial setup is pretty simple, the challenge is more about trying to generate all the dependencies, setting the rules and actually setting up internals, ENBB. Our deployment was staggered and took five to six months. We started with a pilot in a region with the most number of users and complexity in order to test and configure the rules we needed. We then went global, starting with the big operations and then moving to the smaller ones which would be easier and take less time. Implementation required a couple of consultants who were familiar with the application and a team that managed the whole operation. The deployment probably involved around 10 people.
What other advice do I have?
Any WAN or LAN environment will benefit from this sort of solution because it consolidates not only the monitoring but also the operation. You can actually trigger some actions based on the conditional threshold that you set in the tool.
I rate this solution a nine out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

- "This solution would benefit from expanding on the capabilities within the API."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution for network node monitoring and alerting.
How has it helped my organization?
This solution has scaled as we have grown.
What is most valuable?
It is very extensible with 'SWQL' and APIs to where we are beginning to integrate it with network automation.
This solution has a very large and active user community.
What needs improvement?
This solution would benefit from expanding on the capabilities within the API.
Network automation is a hot topic now, and SolarWinds needs to be focused on developing the product with that in mind.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for two years, but it has been in my company for much longer.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We are a larger and dispersed company so there are many, many network nodes monitored by NPM. It has been able to expand and scale to manage that well.

Scalable, traditional brand; multitenancy needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "What I've found most valuable about the solution is that it's scalable."
- "The solution is not always good with new features, so it's take a long time."
What is most valuable?
What I've found most valuable about the solution is that it's scalable.
What needs improvement?
An area of the solution that needs improvement is the multitenancy. I'd like to see more features that deal with multitenancy in the next release.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for a couple of years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
There are issues with newer features so it can take a long time to adjust. The solution is in bad shape because of software hacks.
How was the initial setup?
The installation takes about one day. However, it can take more than a couple of days to work with SolarWinds NPM or other products. The integration is part of the project.
What about the implementation team?
We have specialists that take care of the installation. Usually you need two or three technicians to implement, depending on the company's experience. The main part is integrating the customization.
What was our ROI?
To get the positive business case within ROI, return on investment, sometimes also use the NCV, the net constant value.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There's standard licensing, and then it depends on the size of the customer. I have customers that pay anywhere from 25K up to 200K, depending on the subscription model.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The competitors can be PRTG in combination with, for example, log monitoring features. There are lots in that space.
If you look at SolarWinds, it's a very traditional brand, and there are a couple of competitors who are far more modern, also in the layout. Some of the competitors have better visibility, and also have licenses more suitable for some customers.
What other advice do I have?
We have a couple hundred customers using this solution.
Whether the solution is right depends on the customer's needs. What does he want? What is the company's strategy? What expertise does he have? Does the company have its own technicians? Does higher management have the strategy to help their specialists or not?
I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

SolarWinds SME at a tech services company
NetPath Services show the end-to-end view of the path for accuracy and availability. That provides me with the data to visualize an issue in the network.
What is most valuable?
It is hard to identify a single feature for each product as the three products function as a chorus to help me manage our IT throughout the enterprise. Nonetheless, here are the valuable features of each product.
NPM 12.0
The most helpful feature with in NPM is the NetPath Services. Having the ability to view the end-to-end view of the path for accuracy and availability provides me with the data to visualize an issue in the network.
NCM 7.5
With NCM, I am able to track the accuracy and changes to my networking devices to make sure configuration integrity is adhered to.
SAM 6.3
With the SAM application, the Application Health Overview feature lets me know that my production traffic is running as expected.
Having all 3 products tied together gives me the data I need to accurately pinpoint a problem within moments, instead of collating data from various applications and servers. The difference is five minutes with SolarWinds, compared to two hours without SolarWinds.
How has it helped my organization?
These three products have provided us with the information we need through a single interface to identify issues from server to network to remote site. They provide us with the intel we need to make better decisions on improving our network while reducing costs through under-utilized paths.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see more information on design, customization from the community, and a better certification department.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using SolarWinds products since 2000.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Once I installed it as a high performance server, there were no stability issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Once I got my pollers deployed to different areas of the globe, the system functioned better.
How is customer service and technical support?
Technical support is good, but I got faster answers from the community pages.
How was the initial setup?
The SolarWinds setup is wizard based and walks you through each step. It will identify shortcomings with your system resources, but it could use a little more work. It would be helpful if the system would identify and configure based on a solution type, such as large (with pollers), medium (different buildings), or small campus.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Start with the three products and your licensing needs, and then increase capacity as you grow.
What other advice do I have?
I would suggest the following:
- Install the product with default settings
- Build the database
- Reinstall based on the needs and requirements of your deployment

Solution Architect at Accenture
Good technical support and comparatively cheaper than other solutions
Pros and Cons
- "It is considerably cheaper compared to other tools."
- "The scalability can be better."
What needs improvement?
There are modules in SolarWinds NPM which are better than other competitive tools. However, some areas require new releases or updates. For example, there have not been many updates to cloud monitoring, containerization or serverless environments. In that regard, SolarWinds NPM is not as good as other solutions in the market.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a stable solution, and rate the stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability can be better.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support has been a good experience.
What was our ROI?
The ROI has been good.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is considerably cheaper compared to other tools and available technologies in terms of LMS or EMS.
What other advice do I have?
I rate this solution a seven out of ten. Regarding advice, I would recommend concentrating on gaining some expertise. A foundational or intermediate understanding of different network protocols and technologies would be helpful when using SolarWinds. In addition, understanding the underlying technology that will eventually be monitored or managed will be good.

Dashboards are very useful but it should have better integration with other solutions
What is our primary use case?
We use NPM to monitor our enterprise for up/down status on network devices.
How has it helped my organization?
We consolidated five different products into a series of applications which helps us monitor our production network.
What is most valuable?
Dashboards are very useful.
What needs improvement?
SolarWinds should have integrations back into products like ExtraHop, VIAVI, Riverbed, and NETSCOUT.
For how long have I used the solution?
Less than one year.

It enables us to monitor the health and functionality of our nodes on the MPLS.
What is most valuable?
It gives us an insight on what we need to monitor on our network. We get granulated data on where issues are occurring in regards to traffic latency and bandwidth utilization. Also we can monitor the health and functionality of our nodes on the MPLS.
Both the NPM and the NTA modules. We are able to track down information in regards what kind of traffic is being generated on our network and also help us determine what applications we can allow and what not to allow.
How has it helped my organization?
We were able to determine if end users were using the network to do work related stuff or otherwise and reduce bandwidth hogging for non-business related activities on the network.
What needs improvement?
So far I am satisfied with the result but I am still learning how it works.
For how long have I used the solution?
One year
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
No it was very straight forward. You have understand the concept of networking to apply the tool. If you do then implementing it is easy. There were some version releases that had stability issues but the support team was very good at letting us know what we needed to do to fix the issues.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There were some version releases that had stability issues but the support team was very good at letting us know what we needed to do to fix the issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability was not a problem. We only monitor nodes that matter most on the environment. This makes managing the environment easier. Less is more`
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
They have always been helpful when we needed support I have no complaint at all.
Technical Support:I would rate it at an 8 out of 10
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used network instruments. For what we were trying to accomplish it was not just doing it to the level we needed and it was not very straight forward to use either.
How was the initial setup?
The initial set up was very straight forward. I think complication comes with differences in environment.
What about the implementation team?
It was an in house implementation and I did it myself.
What was our ROI?
ROI on this has been fantastic. It was supposed to be a very expensive investment. We got a good deal and the product did not disappoint it has definitely help us dodge several bullets on several occasions.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Product including support was about $6000 but I would say for what its able to help us do its more than that.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Yes I was able to go through a whole bunch of options such as managed engine but I was not very impressed with the licensing scheme. Also most products were SAAS and we wanted independence and ownership over the product.
What other advice do I have?
I would say understand your environment and what you want to see. Also know what you deem important to your business and policies that guide your network usage. Not everyone one would find this particular product to their liking but for those who want to get to the granular level of assessment this is definitely a product to look at.
Also they have now added a feature where the traditional style of setting up monitoring reports is no longer necessary. Initially you had to create complex alerting to know what happened at a particular time. Now you just have to filter by date and time and you can choose what network protocols to filter by to see what happened at a particular point and time in real time stats.

I am among the few Solarwinds Certified Professional and have been working on Solarwinds for around 8-10 years now. I have been amazed at the way it has been consistently improving to cater to the ever-growing needs of infrastructure monitoring. The extreme reliance on IT in the current scenario makes monitoring of the system more critical than ever. From the days of Up/down monitoring things have gotten smarter and smarter and Solarwinds has been keeping up very well. I have worked on majority of their modules at Small, Medium as well as Large enterprise level. And for the most part Solarwinds suite has not disappointed me. Agreed that there is no perfection and always a scope to improve what keeps Solarwinds surging ahead is their agility to quickly encompass path breaking enhancements or an altogether new module.
Some highlights:
The quick installation which results in a satisfying experience of having the system up and running in no time is still their advantage.
The seamless integration and lucid interface makes it easy to get to the root cause in no time.
Flexible options now to have a few standalone modules as well.
The fantastic Thwack community with priceless contribution.
Ease of administration for the most part. A small portion is a bit convoluted which can be due to the fact that it has many features and is now a giant suite of software.
Abundance of knowledge base
Some areas of improvements:
Some features are still old school - like requesting new OID/MIB and then downloading and updating them
Complicated upgrade
Some features have been requested for years and is still not implemented.
Web based alerting is a pain compared to the original windows application where once could simultaneously work on multiple alerts at the same time and copy paste content.
Not the most satisfactory Failover/standby solution.
Overall it is an extremely feature rich suite of monitoring software with a hunger to get into the Gartner's leader quadrant .
