Is easy to use, stable and scalable, but needs a more appealing interface
Pros and Cons
  • "The interface is easy to use."
  • "The interface should be made attractive."

What is most valuable?

The interface is easy to use.

What needs improvement?

The designs are not really very appealing. When you make the design, it's quite basic which includes the icons. The tool needs to include brighter colors and be more user-friendly. The interface should be made attractive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable.

How are customer service and support?

I think the technical staff are well-versed because they usually have to make designs for the customers.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. For me to start the design from scratch, it actually took less than 15-30 minutes.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Straightforward environment and flexible
Pros and Cons
  • "User-friendly ID and direct integration with GitHub are the most valuable."
  • "It would be great to support other languages and applications, and that is one of the things we can improve."

What is our primary use case?

Test Professional is a versatile solution that can be utilized for a wide range of projects such as integration, analysis, reporting, development, and BIS or data-related projects that are based on Microsoft technologies. While it is a useful tool for many purposes, we primarily use it for security testing as it excels in this area.

What is most valuable?

User-friendly ID and direct integration with GitHub are the most valuable. We can integrate it with other platforms and even use Python. So, it's not limited to just one platform and has good coding capabilities.

What needs improvement?

One significant issue is when there are multiple annual updates, and we are developing a project, it should be compatible. We may need to either upgrade or downgrade the project, depending on the package. That can be a difficult and bothersome task. We need to maintain the same version of the environment. So compatibility should be improved.

For additional features, it can also support the Python language. We can develop using Python features in Visual Studio. It would be great to support other languages and applications, and that is one of the things we can improve. Visual Studio is very open, and we can develop in no time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for five to six years, primarily for community, enterprise, and solution projects. I am using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable enough, I would rate it nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It has good scalability. We have six to seven users currently working with it.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward. The deployment process can be executed quickly. Once it's in our system, we can use it for any development project based on the project we need. The deployment can be done in-house without any technical team necessary.

What about the implementation team?

Deployment usually takes about ten minutes, and I can do it myself in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's costly, but not too much, and it's just within our budget. One good thing is we can make use of community relations.

There aren't any additional costs, like extra system integration or something. However, there may be some differences in the pricing since the PS will be different. As a standard version, it will have most of the capabilities.

What other advice do I have?

The environment is straightforward and user-friendly, so there's not much of a learning curve. I used it for my project, and it worked well, and I definitely recommend it for future use.

Overall, I would rate it a nine out of ten.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Visual Studio Test Professional for as long as I can remember.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate Visual Studio Test Professional's scalability nine out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was pretty straightforward.

What was our ROI?

We've seen an ROI because the IDE is much richer than others we've used.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Visual Studio Test Professional is a little pricey - I would rate its pricing six out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

Integrated testing solution that stores a broad range of packages and offers scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature has been to store all our packages in one place including SSIS packages, SQL tables, TFS and SSR."
  • "The most valuable feature has been to store all our packages in one place including SSIS packages, SQL tables, TFS and SSR."
  • "The server that we use is very slow so that is concerning for us."
  • "The server that we use is very slow so that is concerning for us."

What is our primary use case?

When using Visual Studio, we have two type types of reports that we use including TFS and Git. I use TFS to open the solutions, make any changes and to complete tests for quality program production.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature has been to store all our packages in one place including SSIS packages, SQL tables, TFS and SSR.

What needs improvement?

The server that we use is very slow so that is concerning for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for almost a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is not that stable. The server that we use is very slow so that is concerning for us.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We have our own tech support in the office so we do not use their customer support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. We have partial scripts and we used them to run the setup using Octopus.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to save changes in their repository or it might get lost.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

A secure solution with an easy deployment
Pros and Cons
  • "It's great for the development of .NET."
  • "Visual Studio Test Professional is great for the development of .NET and we use it both as a cloud solution and on-premises."
  • "The solution should be cheaper."
  • "The solution should be cheaper."

What is our primary use case?

It's great for the development of .NET.

What needs improvement?

The solution should be cheaper. But unfortunately, Microsoft products are usually expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for several years and have used Visual Studio 10, 12 and 13. We use it both as a cloud solution and on-premises.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. It is secure because most of our applications are in .NET.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment was not complicated, and our developers completed the deployment. Only those two developers use the solution, and we don't plan to increase usage at this time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Visual Studio Test Professional has an annual license.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a ten out of ten. I recommend Visual Studio Test Professional, primarily if you work with .NET. If we are developing something in .NET or C++, we use Visual Studio. But if we are developing something in Java, we have to use Java.

It's a highly powerful tool for custom software development
Pros and Cons
  • "Visual Studio is highly powerful. It's probably the best software development tool on the market."
  • "Visual Studio is highly powerful. It's probably the best software development tool on the market."
  • "Sometimes Visual Studio is slow. It uses a lot of resources like memory and processing power. You should optimize the performance by only installing what you need on your machine. Don't install unnecessary things that will slow your machine."
  • "Sometimes Visual Studio is slow. It uses a lot of resources like memory and processing power."

What is our primary use case?

Visual Studio is for custom software development.

What is most valuable?

Visual Studio is highly powerful. It's probably the best software development tool on the market.

Some of the features appreciated by our teams that work with VS are:

IntelliSense, rename functions (classes, methods, variables), move definition to file, error navigation, search in files (match case, regex), NuGet package manager, GIT experience (especially at solving merge conflicts and view history on a specific file, compare with the previous file to see changes in time), watch list and the fact it can be pinned for the variable you are monitoring, conditional breakpoints, moving execution line up when debugging, shortcuts to arrange elements in the page and remove unused namespaces, possibility to chose the Thread you want to monitor when you have multiple threads, code snippets, easy navigation to the definition and to other classes/methods/properties that refer them, and configuration of code cleanup on multiple profiles and with a lot of options.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been selling Visual Studio for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Sometimes Visual Studio is slow. It uses a lot of resources like memory and processing power. You should optimize the performance by only installing what you need on your machine. Don't install unnecessary things that will slow your machine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It depends on what you mean by scalability. Only one person uses Visual Studio at a time, but it's scalable in terms of project size. We have
70 users. We will grow usage as we grow the department and the company. We're expecting between 5 and 10 percent growth in usage next year.

How are customer service and support?

Microsoft support could be faster. It took a while to get to a knowledgeable person in some cases, but we got the answer that we were looking for in the end.

How was the initial setup?

Setting up Visual Studio is straightforward. Each developer configures their own environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have both options. Some licenses are paid yearly. Others are monthly subscriptions.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Visual Studio Test Professional nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Easy to quickly scale up automation and user friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Easy to use and easily scalable."
  • "The product is very easy to use and we were able to scale up the automation solution quickly which was beneficial."
  • "The solution is quite expensive."
  • "It's an expensive solution which is an issue for us."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case of this solution is for UA automation. I'm a process manager and we are customers of Visual Studio.

What is most valuable?

The product is very easy to use and we were able to scale up the automation solution quickly which was beneficial.

What needs improvement?

It's an expensive solution which is an issue for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and we get upgrades every couple of years. Most of our developers use Visual Studio; we have around 150 users in total.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, it took us around four to five hours and we were able to do it by ourselves with our own three-person IT team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay an annual licensing fee.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We took a look at Tricentis Tosca and SmartBear TestComplete a few months ago but nothing has been finalized. We're looking for an alternative to Visual Studio Test Professional.

What other advice do I have?

If cost is not an issue then I would recommend this solution.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.
