Manage and onboard permission but has high cost
Pros and Cons
  • "They can do any provisioning for the virtual machines. For instance, they will only see those resources if we allocate 10 Ghz database storage. The limitation is due to our setup: we need to ensure customer isolation, as vCloud Director supports multi-tenancy."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to manage and onboard permission and access on the laptop.

How has it helped my organization?

We have limitations on the capabilities of its sender. We send our prospect to speak with the administration through the administrator on their phone. It's very easy for the user but quite tricky for the administration.

    What is most valuable?

They can do any provisioning for the virtual machines. For instance, they will only see those resources if we allocate 10 Ghz database storage. The limitation is due to our setup: we need to ensure customer isolation, as vCloud Director supports multi-tenancy.

We can access vCloud Director from the Internet. Once we access it, somebody else can do the same.

    What needs improvement?

The data probability is advanced for the monitoring surface and the application. We need to improve the physical data for monitoring and understanding scalability with automation for autoscaling.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using vCloud Director since 2015. We are using the V10 of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We need to verify compatibility, which is crucial to ensuring stability.

I rate the solution’s stability a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Two hundred users are using the solution. We plan to increase the use of the vCloud director in the future.

I rate the solution’s scalability a six out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Sometimes, we encounter challenges with support. When we open a support case, it is handled by representatives from various locations, such as the US or England. The initial response might come from India or elsewhere. Occasionally, we have to reiterate our issue from scratch, which can be frustrating. Ideally, we should get support personnel with historical data to avoid repeating explanations every time we reach out for assistance.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very difficult and takes two weeks to complete. Separate coding is very difficult. Ten people are required for the solution's deployment.

We have to prepare, it may only take one or two days. However, we must ensure thorough preparation from the bottom up, starting with the server and setting up a vSphere server. Additionally, we need to prepare some data for vCenter. We can proceed with the installation of the vCloud Director.

I rate the initial setup as three out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

    What was our ROI?

The licensing model is fair. The company management is happy because we pay for the services, and they become available. However, it's too expensive. We are considering changing our solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate the product’s pricing a six out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

When scanning thoroughly, we integrate automation. It would be easier if VMware improved its capabilities. Then, we can implement autoscaling through the web interface.

There is multi-channel support, yet Net Depot is used for security and monitoring. This is crucial if we expose profiles to the Internet for security reasons. We need to enhance security, especially in protecting vCloud Director. If anyone pushes or plugs in something, it could compromise customer access. VMware may be better prepared for security reasons.

Two persons are required to maintain the solution.

If we only have a small amount of resources, we'll opt for the public vCloud but if we have a large amount of resources like 100s, 1000s then vCloud Director might be a better solution.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

A product with an easy initial setup phase that needs to improve its connections with another solution
    Pros and Cons
    • "The product's initial setup phase was easy."
    • "Sometimes, there is a disconnection that happens between vCloud Director and its underlying VMware vCenter, where the actions are supposed to be taking place, making it an area where improvements are required."

What is our primary use case?

I am satisfied with the use of the product in my company.

    What needs improvement?

As my company started off with the product a few months ago, we have not faced any issues and are still exploring the tool's functionalities.

The interface of the product is okay. Sometimes, there is a disconnection that happens between vCloud Director and its underlying VMware vCenter, where the actions are supposed to be taking place, making it an area where improvements are required. My company is still exploring the aforementioned area of the product. I feel the product is continuously evolving.

I can't comment on whether VMware needs to focus on marketing efforts to promote its products since it is in the transition phase after Broadcom purchased it. My company is waiting to see what is going to happen next. VMware purchases Broadcom, and I don't know if, under the new management, the changes that will be made are going to be beneficial to customers or not, so it depends on how Broadcom is going to play the game.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using vCloud Director for several months now. I don't remember the version of the solution. My company is an end user of the product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have faced no stability issues with the product.

How are customer service and support?

My company has faced no issues with the technical support offered by VMware.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I use VMware vCenter and VMware vSphere 7.0, as they provide another level of management.

    How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My company has no problems with the pricing of the product as we got good discounts from VMware.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My company did not evaluate other options in the market since we mostly use VMware-based products.

What other advice do I have?

I have not encountered any issues, difficulties, or weaknesses with the product.

I rate the overall tool a seven out of ten.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Provides control over applications used by users through the launcher but initial setup was complex, especially when dealing with legacy profiles and migrations
    Pros and Cons
    • "We were using VMware, also combined with AirWatch and Boxer. We configured corporate emails on mobiles and used them for MDM applications on tablets, like the launcher."
    • "The reason we moved to Microsoft Intune was because of the license cost of VMware. It's very expensive."

What is our primary use case?

In the beginning, we were using VMware, also combined with AirWatch and Boxer. We configured corporate emails on mobiles and used them for MDM applications on tablets, like the launcher.

We are not using AirWatch for mobiles anymore. We are using it only for MDM for tablets with the launcher so we can control the applications our users use.

    What needs improvement?

The reason we moved to Microsoft Intune was because of the license cost of VMware. It's very expensive.

So, there is room for improvement in terms of pricing.

Another thing that could be improved is the support. Sometimes, the response takes a long time, and the advice they provide could be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for ten years.

We do use the cloud, and we also have the console—the CN 504.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a seven out of ten. We don't have many issues related to the software. It's more on the hardware side.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability a seven out of ten. It's a good solution. And I wish that we could stay on AirWatch because I was more familiar with it than Microsoft Intune. But because of the pandemic, we had to cut costs, and Intune was part of our O365 package. So, we had to leverage Intune. And because the license of VMware was very expensive, we had to move.

We used to have a thousand users, but now we have moved the users to the Internet. So what we left was just the hardware, the tablets.

We're just using AirWatch now for the tablets for hotel rooms. So, there are around 3000 end users.

How are customer service and support?

There is room for improvement in customer service and support. In the past, I've had some issues with some tickets.

This is because the support engineer wasn't able to resolve the issue, and they just kept wasting my time. Sometimes, the support engineer would leave the chat and another one would come in, and I had to repeat everything all over again. I had a couple of tickets that are still pending.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    We use vCloud and Microsoft.

One thing I like about AirWatch is that we can create different profiles and assign them to the devices. And when some application is not being deployed from the console, we can select and manually push for it.

In Intune, we don't have these options. So, we create a profile, and then we hope that the other profiles are landing on the devices. And if there are some devices not running, then we are not able to force or reinstall. This is one of the big differences that I see between one and another.

Intune is more complex than AirWatch. AirWatch is more accessible. It's easier than than Intune.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not that simple. One of the issues we faced in the beginning was that most of our devices were enrolled on legacy profiles, and we were advised to migrate to the enterprise.

However, because we have templates that are used in the hotel rooms and we have around 3000 tablets, it's not convenient for us to go into each room and reenroll the tablets to Android Enterprise. So, we have a lot of tablets still on legacy mode.

Usually, when there's an issue, the first thing that the engineers tell me is that legacy support is no longer in end-of-life and that I should move to enterprise. However, support for legacy mode is very limited.

We use SaaS, managed by VMware.

    What about the implementation team?

I manage this product in our company.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Offers flexibility of handling workloads and good scalability
    Pros and Cons
    • "It optimizes the process for cloud structure."
    • "I like the networking and the flexibility of handling workloads within vCloud Director for virtual data center management."
    • "I had issues with the support, but I also learned from the support. There is room for improvement in the response time."
    • "Initially, I would rate the stability a three out of ten because we faced some complex stability issues initially."

What is our primary use case?

Typically, when a user or customer wants to have a tenant to provide services to other customers.

How has it helped my organization?

It fits well in larger groups but not necessarily in the managed service provider model.

It optimizes the process for cloud structure, but it varies greatly from customer to customer.

With the first implementation, we had networking issues with vCloud Director in multi-tenant cloud environments. But with more experience and our dedicated vCloud Director, it works fine now.

We use it with NSX. Initially, I was concerned about future issues with NSX and vCloud Director. Thankfully, experts improved it, and it's getting better. However, networking is very sensitive in large vCloud Director deployments.

My opinion is that our specific installation or storage configuration might have made it difficult to achieve optimal product placement.

    What is most valuable?

I like the networking and the flexibility of handling workloads within vCloud Director for virtual data center management.

    What needs improvement?

All products have issues. Perhaps the update process. We sometimes face problems, but I don't know if it's our plan or the product itself.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it for a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Initially, I would rate the stability a three out of ten because we faced some complex stability issues initially. I had a lot of issues at first, making me think the product wasn't as stable as advertised.

Now, it is more stable. I would rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

I would recommend it to medium-sized businesses and enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

I had issues with the support, but I also learned from the support.

There is room for improvement in the response time.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Neutral

    How was the initial setup?

You need to know what you're doing, like with all products. If you have everything checked and ready, an hour or an hour and a half for implementation is reasonable. It depends on preparation, like other products.

    What about the implementation team?

We're an IT services house. We implement vCloud Director and vRealize Aria for ourselves and our clients.

I implement and work with it, but I'm not the architect.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with ten being low price.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A highly stable solution that provides the ability to host customers on their own cloud
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is its ability to host customers on their own cloud."
    • "vCloud Director should include better billing options for businesses like mine or more options for customers to see their usage and billing situation regarding the usage of vCloud Director."

What is our primary use case?

I own a hosting company and use vCloud Director for my customers.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is its ability to host customers on their own cloud.

    What needs improvement?

vCloud Director should include better billing options for businesses like mine or more options for customers to see their usage and billing situation regarding the usage of vCloud Director. vCloud Director's graphical user interface should be made easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using vCloud Director for around 12 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate vCloud Director ten out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

vCloud Director has good scalability. I rate vCloud Director a nine out of ten for scalability.

    How was the initial setup?

Compared to its competitors, the initial setup of vCloud Director is more difficult than it should be.

    What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment with vCloud Director.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are paying around $ 15,000 per month for vCloud Director, and it would be nice if it could be made cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

Users need to be educated to use vCloud Director.

Overall, I rate vCloud Director an eight out of ten.

    Pros and Cons
    • "We use the solution to connect clouds to different clouds."
    • "It would be great if Microsoft and VMware come together and become a common tool."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to connect clouds to different clouds.

    What needs improvement?

It would be great if Microsoft and VMware come together and become a common tool.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the product for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The product is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's support depends on the partnership. We do not attend to level 1 and level 2 support cases but level 3 support cases.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's price is the market standard and depends on usage.

What other advice do I have?

    Has valuable scaling architecture
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is the scaling architecture that they have built."
    • "The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is the scaling architecture that they have built."
    • "Database services need to go beyond what they are currently doing."
    • "vCloud Director is an expensive solution."

What is our primary use case?

We have a partnership with vCloud Director, and we are a customer. We run one of the largest private clouds globally.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is the scaling architecture that they have built.

    What needs improvement?

vCloud Director should focus on helping customers sustain their private clouds and scale out when necessary.

The solution has some basic functionalities and a few functional services. They are working to orchestrate between public and private clouds. While this is good, I think they need to enable private clouds to ensure that they are competing in the market of public clouds. For us, the cost of a public cloud is seven times more expensive than what we build and consume.

They also should consider bringing in significant upgrades like SNS features. Database services need to go beyond what they are currently doing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using vCloud Director for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Once configured, vCloud Director is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

vCloud Director needs to be more scalable for private clouds.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support a seven out of ten. Personally, I have a network at VMware that I can connect with when I have a challenge, I can depend on it more than calling their support desk.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Neutral

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution is not easy. You need to use professional services to be effective. Unfortunately, the skill set for vCloud Director is not easily available, and it cannot be consumed straight out of the box.

Once deployed, we only require one person to spend twenty minutes a day on maintaining the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

vCloud Director is an expensive solution. Our organization selects the top tier of the product options, which ensures that we get every feature we want.

What other advice do I have?

The decision to use this solution depends on the size of the organization. A small organization that has less than one hundred servers deploying vCloud Director will find that the cost of running is much cheaper than the product itself. I would not recommend anything above one hundred. However, if you have to constantly change, and you have a dynamic environment, then it would make sense.

I rate this solution an eight out of ten overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A very robust tool that allows multi-tenants in a single, shared space
    Pros and Cons
    • "The orchestration and automation are very valuable."
    • "The solution should add other hypervisors so things like hover wizards can be automated."

What is our primary use case?

Our company uses the solution to create private clouds for customers. The workload editor is applicable for large infrastructures or providers of cloud services.

    What is most valuable?

The solution is a very robust tool.

The orchestration and automation are very valuable.

The GUI console is very easy to use.

The solution allows for multi-tenants in a single, shared space and that is valuable to customers.

    What needs improvement?

The blueprint that allows customers to create their own images for deployment services needs some improvement.

The solution should add other hypervisors so things like hover wizards can be automated. Currently, the solution only offers this option for their own VMware. Other products like Red Hat allow you to automate anything.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable with no issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is rated a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support staff used to be very inexperienced but now they are good and the process is simple.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very complex but now it is very simple.

    What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution for customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive so pricing is rated a four out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution and rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
