Depending on your applications, it could be more cost-effective and easier to manage on HCI however you still need to compare it against traditional deployment case by case.,
Pros and Cons
  • "Being able to deploy multiple applications with virtual servers is the most valuable for us. The capacity of the system is quite constant so it's got some of the good features."
  • "Being able to deploy multiple applications with virtual servers is the most valuable for us."
  • "I think it needs to be more cost-effective. I would also say that even though the capacity is good, there is also room for improvement there. Also, they could improve the security of the system."
  • "I think it needs to be more cost-effective if customers already have existing SAN to compare with."

What is our primary use case?

We use VMware vSAN in a private cloud. We deploy company (customers') applications using the application servers in VMware. We have about 10,000+ users using it.

How has it helped my organization?

[We deployed it for our customer]

What is most valuable?

Being able to deploy multiple applications with virtual servers is the most valuable for us.

What needs improvement?

I think it needs to be more cost-effective if customers already have existing SAN to compare with.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used VMware vSAN for four years. We are using version 6.5 of vSAN.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had much of a problem so I would say it is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Good.

How are customer service and support?

We have good support and meet SLA.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We switched from traditional deployment to HCI in order to scale and ease management to cope with a large number of applications

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy and straightforward. We had no issues. It took us about a month for installation and configuration.

What about the implementation team?

What was our ROI?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

N/A

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Customer also considered Nutanix.

What other advice do I have?

VMware vSAN may not be the right solution for everyone or for every solution. There might be more solutions that you want to consider depending on your issues of application deployment at hand.  So you have to look at your own factors and compare solutions thoroughly before you make a big decision. I would rate VMware vSAN at an eight on a scale of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

A storage virtualization software with a useful orchestration feature
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the orchestration feature."
  • "When you use vSAN, you have a very good orchestration part."
  • "Integration could be better."
  • "Integration could be better. It should be easier to integrate vSAN with the dashboard you have, with Google, and the others."

What is our primary use case?

We provide it for the government, big banks, and companies in Brazil.

What is most valuable?

I like the orchestration feature. The biggest problem with the hyper-convergence solutions is storage. This is because there's often a problem with the big size of the database. The other problem is how to use and balance VM in storage and CPU memory. When you use vSAN, you have a very good orchestration part. It's the main selling point of vSAN compared to other solutions.

What needs improvement?

Integration could be better. It should be easier to integrate vSAN with the dashboard you have, with Google, and the others. Better integration is very important because the customers need to put the solution inside their company. It's the same dashboard for AWS, the same dashboard on GCP. It's good to see this inside a dashboard. It's very important.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware vSAN since 2015.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

On a scale from one to ten, I would give VMware vSAN a nine.

What about the implementation team?

My company is a vSAN implementer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is okay.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

A good orchestration solution is SimpliVity. It's a very good choice because you don't have to dedicate much time. But vSAN is also very good. Dell's solution is very similar, but it's a complex tool.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A stable solution with integrated storage and a single pane of glass for management and operational control
Pros and Cons
  • "It has a single pane of glass for management and operational control, which is the most valuable feature. The integrated storage is also valuable."
  • "It has a single pane of glass for management and operational control, which is the most valuable feature."
  • "Its integration with a hybrid cloud can be improved. Its scalability can also be improved so that it can be integrated with more than 32 nodes. The maximum number of nodes is okay, but our use cases could probably do with more nodes, probably up to 64. In terms of new features, it should probably have the basic support for high-speed networking spaces."

What is most valuable?

It has a single pane of glass for management and operational control, which is the most valuable feature. The integrated storage is also valuable.

What needs improvement?

Its integration with a hybrid cloud can be improved. Its scalability can also be improved so that it can be integrated with more than 32 nodes. The maximum number of nodes is okay, but our use cases could probably do with more nodes, probably up to 64.

In terms of new features, it should probably have the basic support for high-speed networking spaces.

For how long have I used the solution?

My experience with it has been for about 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has good stability. It is better than the non-hyper-converged one that we had previously.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability can be improved so that it can be integrated with more than 32 nodes.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their support is good. If you are a big enough user, you get enough support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is the first one that we used.

How was the initial setup?

For us, it was fairly straightforward. You need to have knowledge of vCenter. The deployment took about two to three days in total.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is expensive, but you get what you pay for.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution, but you have to be careful about the license cost. It can get quite expensive.

I would rate VMware vSAN a nine out of ten.

Feature-rich, good support, and a trouble-free setup
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is good."
  • "Technical support is good. They know what we need."
  • "There is always a challenge with their firmware."
  • "There is always a challenge with their firmware."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product for server virtualization.

What is most valuable?

We have found many of the features to be valuable.

What needs improvement?

There is always a challenge with their firmware. There is different hardware and they are always looking for different firmware that is compatible with vSAN. It is very difficult to find the compatibility matrix.

They need to do some kind of automation in terms of hardware, firmware, and compatibility with the vSAN. They need to do some sort of upgrade for the customer.

I would like to see the upgraded mechanism, and improvements on the hardware so that we can create a VPN.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware vSAN for more than two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution. So far we have not had any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product. As it is only used for server virtualization, we do not consider usage on a per-user basis.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good. They know what we need. We log a case and they come to us with suggestions to fix the issues.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was manageable. It was not a problem.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

What is our primary use case?

We have around 70 to 100 VMs, and we use VMware vSAN to store our data. We have a lot of daily data.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to work with, easy to handle, and easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

Its price could be improved. It is too expensive for our clients.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for around a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We didn't increase our storage.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is really helpful. They are very efficient. I didn't have any problem.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup is not difficult.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is too expensive.

What other advice do I have?

It is a good solution to implement if you have a lot of data. It is quite stable and not too difficult to manage.

I would rate VMware vSAN a seven out of ten. It is a good solution, but it is too expensive.

Good productivity, data storage capabilities, and technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are productivity and data storage."
  • "The most valuable features are productivity and data storage."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and VMware vSAN is one of the products that we implement for our clients.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are productivity and data storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with VMware vSAN for between one and two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    vSAN is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    This is a scalable product.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not dealt with them directly but my understanding is that they have good technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are trying to support Nutanix, so I have some experience with it.

The suitability of one solution over the other depends on the use case.

    How was the initial setup?

As a system architect, I have not deployed it myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of vSAN could be lower.

The licensing fees are paid quarterly.

What other advice do I have?

My advice when it comes to products like vSAN or Nutanix is that these are products for new customers. Existing customers have a classic architecture and they have no reason to implement a hyper-converged infrastructure.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Extremely reliable, provides good performance and agility
    Pros and Cons
    • "Good performance, reliable and agile."
    • "I like the reliability of this product because we can lose more than one host, more than one disk, and everything still works okay."
    • "Licensing costs are a little too high for smaller sized companies."
    • "It would help if the cost of the solution was reduced for smaller sized companies."

What is our primary use case?

We sell and deploy this solution for our customers in a variety of settings from small data centers to big data analytics clusters. Most recently, we have deployed vSAN for VDI solution. We are VMware partners and I'm a solutions architect.

    What is most valuable?

I like the reliability of this product because we can lose more than one host, more than one disk, and everything still works okay. It's also good on performance and agility. You can change and add things without any issues.

    What needs improvement?

It would help if the cost of the solution was reduced for smaller sized companies.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good. We had a customer who bought five hosts a year ago and this year they expanded their infrastructure to 12 hosts, and everything was fine.

How are customer service and technical support?

I think the support is very good. They figured out what the issue was and responded very quickly. The problems we had were from a network perspective, nothing to do with the solution.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very simple and doesn't take long, perhaps two to five days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license is perpetual and there is an additional payment for technical support which is an annual subscription fee. I think it could be cheaper, especially for smaller companies. It's okay for big deployments with a lot of servers and high level of input-output IOPS.

What other advice do I have?

I like this solution very much and I would recommend it.

I would rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Reliable, simple to use, integrates well but expensive
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solutions best feature is that it is easy to use."
    • "The solutions best feature is that it is easy to use."
    • "The customer service is good but there is a cost for it. It does not come free."
    • "It is an expensive solution. There should be more flexible with licensing to allow small businesses the essentials of the solution's features."

What is our primary use case?

We are a non-profit and we are working on a project utilizing the solution for infrastructure.

    What is most valuable?

The solutions best feature is that it is easy to use. The integration between different operating system is easy. It is reliable.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than fifteen years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is totally stable.

How are customer service and technical support?

The customer service is good but there is a cost for it. It does not come free.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive solution. There should be more flexible with licensing to allow small businesses the essentials of the solution's features. They should have a reduced license fee for a certain amount of memory and nodes, or some kind of restriction like this, that would allow smaller businesses a reduced price. We have had a hard time to afford the solution.

There are a lot of other companies that offer similar solutions and they are becoming more and more competitive with VMware at a fraction of the price. For example, Red Hat.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is very good but the price is its downside, this is the reason for my low rating.

I rate VMware vSAN a seven out of ten.
