Nutanix Move is a key tool for organizations migrating virtual machines to Acropolis Hypervisor from VMware or Hyper-V. Users benefit from its ability to transfer between hypervisors and its support for physical to virtual conversions. The migration process is fully automated, efficient, and maintains IP and MAC addresses while allowing manual adjustments. Though user-friendly and cost-effective, some enhancements, such as reverse migration support from Acropolis to Hyper-V and improved scalability for multiple simultaneous VM migrations, are needed. Users also express a need for migration tools for other Nutanix platforms and an option for direct migration from vSphere without vCenter dependency. Despite these areas for improvement, Nutanix Move efficiently supports significant data migrations and adapts to different infrastructures across availability zones.
What are Nutanix Move's key features?Organizations in diverse industries use Nutanix Move to transfer virtual machines across different platforms like VMware, Hyper-V, and Acropolis Hypervisor. It supports varied setups including Nutanix, Azure, and AWS, meeting the needs for flexibility and efficient data handling in complex infrastructures.
| Author info | Rating | Review Summary |
|---|---|---|
| Project Engineer at CTC | 4.5 | I use Nutanix Move to migrate workloads between different platforms like Nutanix, Azure, and AWS. Its automated migration feature is seamless, but I wish it had an option to retry failed migrations without recreating the entire plan. |
| Senior Infrastructure Manager, Information Technology at Pediatrix | 5.0 | I use Nutanix Move for converting from VMware to AHV due to its simplicity and seamless operation. It effectively handles VM conversion without business disruption. However, it could be more scalable. Nutanix Move offers better ROI compared to Zerto, which was challenging. |
| Chief Information Officer and Program Lead at Gatron Industries Ltd | 4.5 | We used Nutanix Move to migrate from VMware to Nutanix AHV, appreciating its valuable feature of automating migrations without downtime. However, it lacks reverse migration capability and direct vSphere integration. The ROI is almost instantaneous due to minimal downtime. |
| Integration Manager at Gilat Satellite Networks | 5.0 | I use Nutanix Move in my company for P2V and cluster migrations. The solution is impressive and free to use, though it could improve by recommending local credentials for OS. We chose Nutanix Move over Cloudways for its ease of use. |
| Assistant Vice President at IndusInd Bank ltd | 5.0 | I use Nutanix Move primarily for VM migration from vCenter, appreciating its easy migration feature. However, it lacks tools for migrating workloads from other Nutanix platforms. So far, I haven't considered other solutions or cloud providers. |
| System Administrator at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees | 4.5 | We use Nutanix Move for migrating tools from VMware to Nutanix without downtime. It integrates well with VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, is easy to set up, and offers fantastic pricing. However, flexibility could be improved, requiring VM Tools configuration. |
| System Administrator at Confidential | 4.5 | I use Nutanix Move to migrate virtual machines across different hypervisors, valuing its automation features. However, it lacks visibility for all running VMs in a cluster and cannot migrate proprietary virtual appliances due to inaccessible source code. |
| Senior Account Executive - All Things Software Defined at a tech services company with 51-200 employees | 4.5 | I rate Nutanix Move 9/10 after two years. Its simplicity makes painful migrations to Acropolis easier, and its cost is reasonable. My main suggestion is adding bidirectional migration support with Hyper-V. |

I use the solution to migrate workloads between different places like Nutanix, Azure, and AWS.
The automated migration feature is the most effective. It automates the whole process, like installation from VMware to Nutanix AHV cluster. It retains the IP and MAC addresses of VMs and cleans up migrated VMs by removing VMware tools from the source. The automated migration is seamless - when we do the cutover, Nutanix Move powers off the source VM and automatically powers on the virtual machine on the Nutanix cluster.
There's also a manual method for workloads that can't be migrated automatically, like Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008, which might not have the required PowerShell version. In these cases, we can still migrate using data migration only, but the engineer has to do more work, like reassigning IP and MAC addresses.
I think Nutanix Move could be improved by adding a way to retry failed migrations. Sometimes when seeding fails, there's no way to redo it without recreating the whole migration plan. I'd like a button to restart the process without creating a migration plan.
I have been using the product for more than two years.
I rate the solution's stability an eight out of ten.
For scalability, Nutanix Move can't scale out or up on its own. If we need more capacity, we have to provision another separate instance. They don't cluster together. But provisioning a new instance is very easy, so I'd still rate it ten for ease of provisioning and configuring. Two of my customers use it, but our company has many more. These are enterprise businesses.
I've communicated with Nutanix technical support. They're very knowledgeable about each Nutanix product, approachable, and technical. They resolve issues easily and give good advice.
Positive
I rate the solution's deployment ease a ten out of ten. It takes about ten minutes or less to deploy. The deployment process involves downloading the image file from the Nutanix portal, uploading it to the on-premise Nutanix cluster, creating a virtual machine, attaching the ISO or QCOW2 file, and completing the configuration.
I rate the overall solution a nine out of ten. My advice to others looking into using Nutanix Move: With VMware's acquisition by Broadcom, many enterprise companies are looking for alternative HCI solutions. If they're considering Nutanix Move to replace their existing infrastructure, Nutanix Move is the best tool for migrating their existing workloads to a Nutanix cluster or even to the cloud. You can't find any other application in the market right now that can do this because Nutanix Move is very powerful.

We use Nutanix Move for converting from VMware to AHV or from VMware to Nutanix AHV.
Nutanix Move helped us get away from the three-tier monolithic infrastructure of VMware and everything that comes with that. It's a very smooth tool. You point Nutanix Move to your VMware environment, pick the VMs you want, and it does all the work for you.
The most valuable feature of Nutanix Move is its simplicity. Nutanix Move is a seamless product. You point the solution to your VM. It runs the scripts on the VMs and runs a bunch of scripts on it. Once done on the VMware side, it powers the VM down, disconnects the mix so you don't have any conflicts on your network, and brings up the converted VM on Nutanix, and you're back to work.
Depending on the size of the VM and how much data you're seeding, it might be an hour, a day, or two. After the converting piece or a minute's cutover, the solution runs the final scripts, syncs up the last data, and you're back up and running. Nutanix Move is very seamless and does not impact the business.
Nutanix Move could be made more scalable, so you could do more instead of taking five or ten VMs at a time.
I have been using Nutanix Move for five years.
I rate Nutanix Move ten out of ten for stability.
Nutanix Move's technical support is amazing.
We previously used Zerto for converting, and that was always very challenging. The infrastructure you needed to bring up to support Zerto and the conversion processes were challenging.
Nutanix Move's initial setup is very straightforward.
I have seen a return on investment with Nutanix Move.
I am using Nutanix Move version 4.9.0.
Suppose you had to invest two or three engineers to migrate 300 VMs from VMware into Nutanix. If you do the math on the hourly rate per engineer and the time it would take them to do it, the price will be three times higher than it is today for Nutanix Move. That's how I look at it, not to mention the work-life balance. The last thing I want is for my engineers to work at three o'clock in the morning or over a weekend and not enjoy their families.
I have not encountered an operating system, whether it's Linux, Unix, or Windows, that Nutanix Move has been unable to convert and move over for me.
Overall, I rate Nutanix Move ten out of ten.

We used the tool once when migrating our infrastructure from VMware to Nutanix. We have multiple options if we buy Nutanix. We can either go for VMware or Nutanix AHV. Nutanix AHV is Nutanix's proprietary hypervisor. We chose Nutanix AHV and used Nutanix Move to migrate our VMware-based machines to Nutanix Clusters.
We can migrate our infrastructure while it is running in production. We can change the hypervisor without any downtime. The product is fully automated. We select a machine we want to move, and the system copies everything in the background and informs us when the machine is ready to move. When we click to move, the product will shut down the machine on vCenter and turn it on on Nutanix. It is 100% automated.
The process can be done in the background without any downtime. The time it takes the machine to boot is the only downtime we experience. Generally, a 1TB machine might take two to three hours to move from one hypervisor to another. With Nutanix Move, we can move the machine within seconds. Everything is done while the service is available.
We can use the tool to move anything from a different hypervisor to Nutanix, but we cannot do it the other way around. We cannot use the solution to move a machine from Nutanix to other hypervisors. If there is no vCenter in an organization, the product must be able to pick machines directly. It should point to vSphere and migrate the machine directly from vSphere instead of moving it from vCenter.
I have been using the product for the last five years.
I rate the solution’s stability a ten out of ten. I faced no issues whatsoever.
The solution's scalability is good. I moved all my infrastructure with the same tool. Three system administrators use the product in our organization. It is used only when we need to migrate our hypervisors.
The support team is top-notch. The team will reach out to us before we reach out to it.
The setup is very straightforward. With just a few clicks, the tool will be ready to run. We just need to provide our vCenter. The setup does not take more than 30 minutes. It includes installing the application and connecting it with vCenter. However, the time taken for migrating the machine from VMware to Nutanix depends on the machine's workload.
We do not pay for anything upfront for the tool to run. The ROI depends on the cost of downtime. The ROI is almost instantaneous because we do not experience any downtime during the migration process.
The tool is bundled as part of the Nutanix license.
If someone has a hypervisor or a separate machine running on VMware or other hypervisors and wants to move their workload from the hypervisor to Nutanix, Nutanix Move is a good tool. We need only one person in the technical team. They must understand how to install the tool. We do not need integration for AI. There is no other solution in the market that can do what Nutanix Move does.
Overall, I rate the product a nine or nine and a half out of ten.

I use the solution in my company for P2V, migration of clusters, transfers, and availability zones.
Everything is good in the solution, and I feel that Nutanix Move is doing things the right way.
The product needs to add a note so that when you put the credential for the OS, it should recommend the user to use a local credential instead.
I faced no challenges when using Nutanix Move.
I have been using Nutanix Move for eight years.
Nutanix Move has been working for more than five years with the same VM connected to all clusters, including the new clusters, while still moving some virtual machines that are running. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
I haven't reached a point where I had to scale up. I have eight clusters and two cloud environments managed under Nutanix Move.
Only the IT Department at my company uses the tool. Eight people in my company use the product without any training. People started to use the tool because it is straightforward. It is very simple to use the tool without the need to ask anyone about it. The people who use the product include Windows admins, Linux admins, and network engineers who did a project involving the migration of new data centers. Instead of calling the system guy, the aforementioned users of the tool started to use Nutanix Move, and they did everything with the solution all by themselves.
You just need to install one Nutanix Move in every environment, and you are good to go.
If you are in a crisis, the tool's support team will join you with a call in about less than 30 minutes or sometimes even less than 15 minutes. I rate the technical support a out of ten. When you have regular questions, like how do I do something in the tool or when you want to know when can I do anything in the product, the solution's support team can take around three to four days to give you an answer, or they may even sometimes take more time. During a critical situation, the response from the product's support team is immediate.
The product's initial setup phase is straightforward.
For the deployment process, you download the image from the website, then upload the image to the Nutanix cluster, create a virtual machine with the image you just imported, and turn it on.
In terms of ROI, I would say that the product is free to use.
The product is available for free. Nutanix Move can even work in other environments where there are no Nutanix products without paying a dime.
Years ago, I evaluated Nutanix Move against a product named Cloudways. My company decided to use Nutanix Move over Cloudways, considering the parts involving licenses and ease of use.
The most effective part of the product in terms of streamlining of migrations revolves around the area known as cut over. With the cut over part, the tool automatically shuts down one side or a VM and turns on the new side or another VM.
The automation aspect of Nutanix Move enhances the migration processes in a straightforward manner.
I suggest people start using the product. I recommend people not start looking at the budget part and make their lives simpler by using Nutanix Move.
I don't think Nutanix Move uses AI.
The values and benefits derived from the use of the product revolve around the area involving the migration processes. In general, the product helps minimize downtime and risks while also saving time of admins and technicians. Nutanix Move is a really great tool.
I rate the tool a ten out of ten.

The solution is used for VM migration from vCenter.
The easy migration is the most valuable feature.
They should have some tools to migrate the workload from another Nutanix platform.
I have experience with Nutanix Move.
It is a stable solution.
Twelve people are using the solution. I rate the scalability an eight out of ten.
The initial setup is straightforward.
It is a free solution.
I would rate the overall solution a ten out of ten.

We use Nutanix Move for the migration of tools from VMware to Nutanix.
Nutanix Move is a fantastic product for migrating VMware to Nutanix, et cetera. This is a migration tool that allows us to migrate live without downtime.
It integrates well with VMware, and you can use it with Microsoft Hyper-V.
There are no dependencies in Nutanix.
The pricing is fantastic.
It is easy to set up the solution.
Simple, knowledgeable people can do the setup to migrate from VMware or Hyper-V to Nutanix.
It's stable.
We'd like Nutanix to be more flexible in the future.
You need to have VM Tools configured with the VM guest host. Without VM Tools, you can't use Move.
I've been using the solution for two or three years.
I'd rate the stability ten out of ten. It is very stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. The performance is good.
Move is required for migration tasks. Only system admin groups use Nutanix Move. Other users are not required.
For bankruptcy compliance, we have to maintain a redundant administrator for every system so that we also have redundant administrators. However, we don't require that many users on the solution in general.
Technical support is very good. We get string support. They're capable of handling any situation, and we've been satisfied with the level of assistance we get.
We are using both Nutanix and VMware.
We use VMware only for virtualization, and we use Nutanix for HCI, hyper-converged infrastructure.
We only use Move for migration purposes.
The initial setup is straightforward and simple. We did not run into any complexities during deployment.
We find the pricing very good.
Nutanix has a bundled product. Move is part of the bundle. In that sense, it doesn't cost anything. There is no additional license for anything. In VMware, we have separate licenses for separate tools. In VM ware, if we have to replicate, we have to add an extra tool, for example. With Nutanix, everything is in one place, and we don't need to buy extra things.
We did not evaluate any other solution previously.
I'm a Nutanix user.
We've been very satisfied with Nutanix. It's a great migration tool and comes with Nutanix in general, which means it doesn't require any extra investment.
I'd rate the solution nice out of ten. If the integrations were a bit better, I would give it a perfect mark.
The solution is used to migrate virtual machines from different hypervisors.
The most valuable feature is the automation. The solution will clone the data that you want to migrate, shut down the virtual machine, disconnect it from the network and start the clone virtual machine inside the solution's platform.
The solution can be improved by adding the ability to see all the virtual machines running in a cluster without having to enter the specific name of the host or its IP address.
It can't migrate virtual appliances that are proprietary because it does not have access to the source code and does not know what modifications have been made.
I have been using the solution for three months.
It is stable.
This is not a production-grade solution. It is just used to migrate virtual machines when you require it therefore it is not scalable.
The technical support is great.
Positive
The setup is straightforward.
The implementation was completed in-house.
Move is open-source.
I give the solution a nine out of ten.
The only maintenance required is for updates that can be installed across the platform with a click of a button.
Most of our customers are currently on Hyper-V or VMware and they are interested in moving to Acropolis Hypervisor, and we use Nutanix Move for the migration. We have never had to move someone from Acropolis Hypervisor. It's always the way around.
Nutanix Move has changed helped in making the painful process of migrating from one hypervisor to another better. It is a painful process of rebuilding virtual machines and migrating data. We can now migrate the entire VMD key to Acropolis Hypervisor.
The most valuable feature of Nutanix Move is how simple it is and the benefit of what it does.
We can migrate from Hyper-V to Acropolis, but we can't move from Acropolis back to Hyper-V. However, we do not have customers who want to, but if we could reassure them that it was possible it would be better. Having our Hyper-V customers have a two-way option that may help. A customer would like to hear that if they do switch they can switch back. I know it's a limitation on Hyper-V but not a limitation on VMware.
I have been using Nutanix Move for approximately two years.
The price of Nutanix Move is reasonable.
I rate Nutanix Move a nine out of ten.
