Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

Can migrate workloads in just a click
The automated migration feature is the most effective. It automates the whole process, like installation from VMware to Nutanix AHV cluster. It retains the IP and MAC addresses of VMs and cleans up migrated VMs by removing VMware tools from the source. The automated migration is seamless - when we do the cutover, Nutanix Move powers off the source VM and automatically powers on the virtual machine on the Nutanix cluster. There's also a manual method for workloads that can't be migrated automatically, like Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008, which might not have the required PowerShell version. In these cases, we can still migrate using data migration only, but the engineer has to do more work, like reassigning IP and MAC addresses.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup was very straightforward and easy. We were able to start replication within minutes of the initial setup."
"We are doing continuous data protection. It works flawlessly. Our recovery points are measured in seconds. We have all these "baby snapshots" throughout the course of the day, so we can roll a VM back to any point in time, spin it up, and away we go. We're actively using that. It works great."
"Our ROI is quite significant, as the SQL cost savings alone would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year."
"The most valuable feature is the customization that allows me to set my protection group myself."
"It is incredibly granular and I really appreciate that."
"The main reasons for adopting Zerto are data protection and being able to do disaster recovery for site recovery."
"The ability to perform DR testing to ensure data integrity is critical."
"Zerto made our migration from different data centers very easy and very smooth."
"We can change the hypervisor without any downtime."
"It is easy to set up the solution."
"The product's initial setup phase is straightforward."
"The easy migration is the most valuable feature."
"Nutanix Move has changed helped in making the painful process of migrating from one hypervisor to another better."
"The solution is stable."
"The automated migration feature is the most effective. It automates the whole process, like installation from VMware to Nutanix AHV cluster. It retains the IP and MAC addresses of VMs and cleans up migrated VMs by removing VMware tools from the source. The automated migration is seamless - when we do the cutover, Nutanix Move powers off the source VM and automatically powers on the virtual machine on the Nutanix cluster."
"The most valuable feature of Nutanix Move is how simple it is and the benefit of what it does."

Cons

"It took me a little bit of time to get used to Zerto's terminology and to relate it back to how you do a backup traditionally. It was a little different. It took a little while to understand what a VPG is and what it does. That's an area that they could probably improve on a little, making the documentation easier to understand."
"There needs to be more flexibility in the licensing."
"When changing replication, the Delta Sync takes approximately six hours for six terabyte virtual machines. During this time, the virtual machine is inaccessible."
"The only thing I really don't like about Zerto is that the ZVM has to be a Windows server."
"The alerting has room for improvement as it is the biggest pain point with the software. It is so bad."
"The number one thing we have found we would like changed so far is the cost per VM. It would be great to get that pricing reduced."
"HPE Zerto Software needs improvements regarding its dependence on storage vendors; the rising hardware prices lead to numerous vendors entering the market, and HPE Zerto Software must enhance its API integrations continuously as new storage vendors emerge across different geographies."
"In terms of improvement, it would be helpful if the implementation team had a better best practices guide and made sure things like the journaling are very clearly understood."
"They should have some tools to migrate the workload from another Nutanix platform."
"We can migrate from Hyper-V to Acropolis, but we can't move from Acropolis back to Hyper-V. However, we do not have customers who want to, but if we could reassure them that it was possible it would be better. Having our Hyper-V customers have a two-way option that may help. A customer would like to hear that if they do switch they can switch back. I know it's a limitation on Hyper-V but not a limitation on VMware."
"I think Nutanix Move could be improved by adding a way to retry failed migrations. Sometimes when seeding fails, there's no way to redo it without recreating the whole migration plan. I'd like a button to restart the process without creating a migration plan."
"We can migrate from Hyper-V to Acropolis, but we can't move from Acropolis back to Hyper-V."
"We'd like Nutanix to be more flexible in the future."
"We cannot use the solution to move a machine from Nutanix to other hypervisors."
"The most valuable feature is the automation. The solution will clone the data that you want to migrate, shut down the virtual machine, disconnect it from the network and start the clone virtual machine inside the solution's platform."
"Nutanix Move could be made more scalable, so you could do more instead of taking five or ten VMs at a time."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a lot of confusion with Zerto licensing. They have a migration license and a replication license. They should simplify the licensing process. The migration license costs a lot of money, and it is only on a one-time basis. If you use that license, it ties to that VM. I might re-migrate that VM in the next five to ten years. It is another environment, but my license is stuck there. The replication license is fine, and I have no issue with its pricing model, but they should simplify the migration license."
"The last time I looked at pricing, it was very good. It's much cheaper by far than VMware."
"The pricing is a little more expensive in comparison to other tools."
"The licensing costs are not cheap. It is kind of an expensive product. However, I am a get-what-you-pay-for kind of person. After using this product, I can understand why the licensing costs are high."
"Pricing is one area where there could be some improvement. We would like to see a consumption model that would charge in a DR scenario, where you're failing over and consuming those resources, instead of a per-protected-node model. Or it could be a model based on the amount of storage space you're protecting."
"Price-wise, it works fine for me, but my budgetary team is always looking for ways to cut costs, and it seems like they first look at the data center and the IT side to find savings."
"We found that in an event that was massive enough to cause an entire cluster to go offline we would be happy with our core services up and running."
"In a world where others are catching up, e.g., VMware High Availability, there needs to be a less expensive option as well. When a customer has approximately 100 VMs, if you multiply by 40, we aren't charging a very high margin on it at all since the license is so expensive. We feel their pain. That is the most expensive part of it. The storage, CPU, and RAM are a lot less. It is the licensing that is really expensive. Whereas, with an option like VMware High Availability, it is a couple dollars per month. That is our spend that we are charged by VMware, then our margin is higher on those VMs. Giving us some ability to have higher margins, as an MSP, would be a good thing."
"The product is available for free."
"The solution is open-source."
"It is a free tool."
"The tool is bundled as part of the Nutanix license."
