What is our primary use case?
We use Veritas Alta Data for data protection, regardless of its location, which can be on-premises, physical, virtual, or cloud-based. Generally, the backup location depends on the databases and the backup issue. Alternatively, a connected backup is sufficient for small, medium, and enterprise clients with a limited number of clients and mostly Microsoft-related workloads, such as SQL Server or Exchange. In this case, we recommend keeping one backup copy locally and one copy in the cloud.
We implemented Veritas Alta Data to protect our data from ransomware.
How has it helped my organization?
Using Veritas Alta Data to copy data from on-premises to the cloud is easy.
Veritas Alta Data is a premium product that requires minimal knowledge to use. It is flexible and can be used on Windows or Linux. With basic knowledge, we can implement the solution without any problems.
Alta Data's immutable storage protects our data from ransomware by making it unchangeable and recoverable.
Alta Data helps provide data protection across multiple cloud environments. The integration is smooth, so we can integrate between AWS, GCP, and Azure to move duplicate data to other locations.
The anomaly detection extension is available in the 10.1 release and can be used for VMware backups. In a future release, it will be available for other workloads.
With the addition of ransomware and anomaly detection to Veritas Alta Data, our clients are more comfortable knowing their data is safe. Alta Data is a premium product that requires minimal knowledge to get started.
Alta Data frees up our staff time because they need to check the system in the morning, and if there are any backup issues, the longest it takes to resolve them is two hours.
Alta Data helps reduce costs by freeing staff time to focus on other projects, saving the organization valuable resources.
What is most valuable?
The ransomware protection feature and anomaly detection are the most valuable, and the ability to integrate new cloud workloads is also valuable.
What needs improvement?
Alta Data should be made more user-friendly, and a video tutorial should be created to help new users understand how to configure and use the solution properly. The existing documentation is over 1,000 pages long, which can be time-consuming to read through.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Veritas Alta Data for almost ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of Alta Data has significantly increased since 2020.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Alta Data is scalable and has the flexibility to work with multiple storage solutions.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously, we used Dell PowerProtect Data Manager. With the Dell PowerProtect Data Manager central console, we can restore data from a central console. With Alta Data, we can only restore data through the client and we need the correct password to do so. With Dell PowerProtect Data Manager, we can perform local and alternate recovery. No scripts are required for SAP HANA, which is not the case with Alta Data.
How was the initial setup?
The initial deployment is straightforward if we know the required steps. Otherwise, it can be time-consuming to follow the documentation, but even then, it is not complex.
First, I will check the compatibility of the system and design the components that are required by the customer. Once the design is complete, we will implement the system in a hierarchical order, starting with the media servers. Finally, we will install the reporting tool so that reporting can be done later. Reporting is not as important in the initial stages, so we need to prioritize the other tasks first.
One person is enough for the deployment.
What was our ROI?
Other backup solutions require contacting multiple vendors when something goes wrong with the storage, but Alta Data provides a single-vendor solution, saving our customers money.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Veritas Alta Data is now offering subscription-based plans with multiple licensing options.
Alta Data is 20 percent more expensive compared to the competition.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Veritas Alta Data eight out of ten.
I recommend Veritas Alta Data for larger and more complex environments. First, check the compatibility with the number of platforms to ensure they are supported. This way, we can avoid unnecessary expenditures.
The number of people required to maintain the solution is determined by the number of servers and locations. We have 17 people managing 1,000 servers per day.
Before purchasing any backup solution, make sure it is compatible with the existing systems and meets business needs.
