Amazon Lightsail Reviews

We have a blog that was hosted on Pagely, and we needed to migrate to AWS because of Pagely's pricing. We are using the VPS instance, specifically the WordPress VPS instance. We are also using the network part because we needed to set a static API. We needed to use a CDN to help us deliver the content, and we are declaring this using Terraform. This is our use case.

I am currently during a migration from a website to Amazon Lightsail, and I have been using it extensively for the past two months.

The best features of Amazon Lightsail are the VPS because it is easier to set up everything and offers excellent pricing. We scaled a VPS with four CPUs and 8 GB of RAM, and we only paid $18.40 a month, making it very economical and a good product.

The intuitive management console of Amazon Lightsail is very good because it is simple. I have the constancy of AWS, so I know it is running on AWS servers and infrastructure, but it is also easier to set up. With just a few clicks, I can set a blog online, a WordPress blog online, a new e-commerce online, or just a new application with NodeJS. I do not need to set up the VPN, the firewall, or the route rules. I do not need this complexity. With just a few clicks, we are ready to go.

The built-in networking capabilities have been helpful.

Amazon Lightsail should have some kind of scale service. To be more clear, if I need to scale up my instance or VPS, I need to create a snapshot and create a new instance from this snapshot with more resources, such as CPU, RAM, or disk. It would be beneficial to have a welcome instance where we can just set the instance, go there to edit and select a greater instance from large to x-large or 2x-large. I do not see the need to scale down, but it would be good too. When we are on an x-large for testing purposes and need to do a rollback to a large one, we need to scale down. We do not have this capability on Amazon Lightsail.

I have had experience with Amazon Lightsail for less than a year.

I did not use the one-click deployment in Amazon Lightsail.

The built-in networking capabilities have helped me.

I cannot comment on integration with other services as we have not tested it yet. We are planning to test with S3, but AWS S3, not Lightsail S3.

Customer service is excellent. They helped us significantly and gathered necessary information from us.

The initial setup is very easy. With just a few clicks, I created a VPS with WordPress, databases, and everything working very well.

Comparing the pricing of Amazon Lightsail with DigitalOcean and Vultr, they have similar pricing structures. Amazon Lightsail works better than DigitalOcean because we know that all infrastructure is on AWS, so we can be confident about it. For this case, it is cheaper and a good solution.

The documentation helped me fix and understand some issues. I faced some problems with the domain part when we needed to set our domains on Cloudflare and set the IP on Cloudflare DNS. The documentation can sometimes be ambiguous, with different documents providing conflicting information. However, we found a helpful guide on Medium that worked perfectly. The AWS documentation about taking an AMI and VPS and setting on Cloudflare was somewhat incorrect.

My review rating for Amazon Lightsail is 10 out of 10.

My usual use cases for Amazon Lightsail involve managing a multi-environment development using Terraform. For that, we have created the instances on Amazon Lightsail, and then we have added a load balancer to that instance. Sometimes, if the load increases or if we want to do traffic distribution, we have added the load balancer to that. We have already automated that using Terraform, so I have used Terraform for automation.

The intuitive management console of Amazon Lightsail has influenced my user experience positively; we deployed a simple application there, such as a basic Nginx application. We deployed two Amazon Lightsail instances, similar to how AWS has EC2 instances. Using user data, we deployed two things there and used the load balancer to test how the load distributes from one instance to another. We also added the networking part, deploying one instance in one Availability Zone and another in a different Availability Zone. If any disturbance happens with the first instance, we have a backup with the second instance.

The effectiveness of Amazon Lightsail's integration with other AWS services in my work has been significant; we integrated the AWS VPC with Lightsail for networking. Additionally, we have used S3 with Amazon Lightsail, where I stored our state file for management using Terraform. We configured S3 for storing that state file.

The most valuable features and capabilities of Amazon Lightsail are its simplicity; it is ideal for small web hosting without the need for complex configurations. If someone is new to cloud computing and doesn't want to configure too many things, then they can go with Amazon Lightsail. It serves as a simple compute service for deploying small web hosting or personal projects that don't require complex configurations. Everything is in one place, including networking, load balancing, and small configurations.

Amazon Lightsail has positively impacted my organization by simplifying the process; we focused on simple applications for our client requirements. However, I haven't explored much beyond that. I have worked on a simple proof of concept as required by our client, and that is the extent of my experience with it so far.

Based on my limited exploration of Amazon Lightsail so far, I would like to see improvements in the console, particularly in user behavior and some cost-related aspects. However, they currently provide very good pricing compared to other services, charging per hour.

I have been working with Amazon Lightsail for six months on one of my projects.

In my opinion, Amazon Lightsail is stable; we have implemented a multi-AZ deployment, which has allowed us to avoid issues thus far.

Before using Amazon Lightsail, we were utilizing Elastic Beanstalk for similar use cases. After receiving a requirement, we transitioned to using Amazon Lightsail from Elastic Beanstalk.

My experience during the initial setup of Amazon Lightsail was straightforward; we followed the documentation, and I found it to be a simple process without much complexity.

I participated actively in the entire initial setup and deployment of Amazon Lightsail, managing everything from scratch to deployment.

My experience with the built-in networking capabilities in Amazon Lightsail is that it provides static IP-related information, which supports stable configurations. If we go with a static IP, then we can add private networking. We also add firewall rules to control incoming and outgoing traffic. There is also a concept of DNS management, so we can manage that as well. CDN is available for content delivery, allowing us to control our incoming traffic. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate Amazon Lightsail an 8.

I had training in my college in 2022 with AWS, and I am also currently training at Jamia University.

I have experience in three technologies: Azure, GCP, and AWS.

In terms of features, Amazon Lightsail can auto-manage the server with capabilities such as Auto Scaling and Placement Groups. They can auto-manage, and the billing cost is reduced because they have limited technology, which helps to optimize our cost billing for AWS.

The benefit of using Amazon Lightsail over the AWS console management is that it is a small platform that is easy to understand, as it has only the instance, DNS, Route 53, snapshots, backups, and load balancing network. Amazon Lightsail has five technologies, and because it's easy to use and everyone can understand it, anyone can manage the server or add anything to that server, making it easy to understand.

The initial setup is easy to do.

Amazon Lightsail needs more security in the networking because hackers can attack in application layers three and four. The networking layer is basically the hacker's target to break the network, so Amazon needs to add more security to Amazon Lightsail's networking, as its networking is too light and can be easily broken by a hacker, who can then enter the server.

The Amazon customer support team is very helpful. As a student, when I was starting the AWS course in 2024, I requested study material and credit to my ID from AWS. After I uploaded my student ID, Amazon helped me to study and provided me with the study material. AWS is very helpful for students and company employees for further study and for collecting badges and certifications for their careers.

The initial setup is easy to do.

I created the server and have noticed how to make the server more secure and ensure there are no loopholes for that server.

I use a snapshot for the backup of our instance. When we create the image, the backup also creates the image, the IAM image.

Amazon services do not have too many bugs; it is easy to use, and Amazon also updates their services every month or every 15 days. If you request that they fix a bug in any service, you can request it from the customer, and then they can fix the service. Amazon doesn't have any type of bugs because they are number one in the world for AWS services.

I have referred people to use Amazon.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate Amazon Lightsail a 10.

I have completed that course from an online course on Simplilearn, and partially I'm working from three months with Amazon Lightsail.

My experience with Amazon Lightsail is good; it is user-friendly and useful for small and medium-type businesses because it is affordable. Compared to EC2, Amazon Lightsail is better.

Amazon Lightsail is a virtual instance that is a service of Amazon AWS, designed to store data securely and provide applications through the cloud at an affordable cost to the SME sector.

I projected on Amazon Lightsail after completing the course. I worked with Amazon Lightsail, ECS, Lambda, and more, gaining experience with these services.

I use Amazon Lightsail for small apps, large scale projects, and enterprises. It is affordable and easy to use for small and medium-sized businesses, and it is very easy to deploy in any servers such as VPS and database.

It is a live project with Amazon Lightsail where we have to create, maintain, manage the service, and deploy the service to SME sectors.

With Amazon Lightsail, I find it easy to do the deployment. It helps me in application deployment processes and development since the service is already made by the developer, and we just need to do the deployment.

The best features in Amazon Lightsail include predictable pricing; its plans bundle compute, storage, and bandwidth into simple monthly rates. Furthermore, it offers a free tier for new users and three months free of select OS if they are using any OS such as Windows and Linux, providing free service for new users.

I find the load balancing and CDN features in Amazon Lightsail important for applications as they are useful. These features are cost-effective; if we compare them to EC2, Amazon Lightsail's service is very cost-effective and easy to deploy.

The load balancer in Amazon Lightsail improves the service, and it is essentially one kind of instance. Load balancing in Amazon Lightsail is effective.

Amazon Lightsail's support for various operating systems and software stacks is valuable.

Regarding improvements, I would like to see enhancements in Amazon Lightsail.

As per the developer, there may be improvements possible depending on user requirements, such as upscaling.

I would also like to see instance modifications possible in Amazon Lightsail as per the user's requirement. If a customer is not satisfied, they may require a higher-level service or instance, with other services also available depending on cost-effectiveness and budget.

I have used Amazon Lightsail within the last 12 months.

The initial setup of Amazon Lightsail was very easy; I faced no challenges. I can set it up myself without needing help from third parties.

The disadvantage I see is data storage; if any data crash occurs in the cloud server, that will lead to significant losses for the customer. This is the only disadvantage; other than that, AWS operates 24 hours without issues such as signal drops.

The initial setup of Amazon Lightsail was very easy; I faced no challenges. I can set it up myself without needing help from third parties.

Apart from Amazon Lightsail, I also have experience working with Azure.

Regarding the main differences from my perspective, Amazon Lightsail is easy to use and very cost-effective compared to other services such as Azure and Google.

For users who want to start working with Amazon Lightsail, I would suggest they dive in.

There is no reason not to use Amazon Lightsail.

I would definitely recommend Amazon Lightsail to others who require this service.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate Amazon Lightsail a 10.

The use case mainly was to deploy a database that there was no option for the platform as a service. It is a database based on a graph, the name is Neo4j. So in AWS, I didn't find the RDS of this database. So I had to create a virtual machine in Lightsail and deploy the Neo4j database on it. 

I did it for the test and production environment, and then it allowed me to create firewall rules and a lot of management networks, but they are pretty simplified. It's not like EC2 where you can have all of those virtual interfaces and virtual networks. It's more like an instance that is standalone. But at least for these small purposes, it attended very well. 

Lightsail has simplified the process of setting up and managing a virtual private server a lot. 

Because I'm able to do it in a few clicks and have the data machine deployed. Like ten clicks is very different, very simplified, then EC2, in that you have to configure a lot of virtual networks, disk management, and a lot of other points regarding the virtual machine environment. 

And in Lightsail, they simplified to do it in as few clicks as possible. So, around ten clicks, you have a virtual machine deployed.

I also leverage it for basic monitoring capabilities. I've set up some basic alerts, for example, to email me if the operating system shuts down, to be aware. But that's the extent of my monitoring features.

There were templates for Ubuntu, for instance, that I used. I used it if I remember, going to 20.04, I guess. It was ready, and I just used the template and it worked well. There is a template for Windows Server, but I didn't test them. 

Also, the configurations over the firewall in the console work very good for the purpose that we need to isolate it from the internet but allow the connection from specific IP addresses in specific ports. 

So the filtering in the Lightsail Firewall works good. And I am able to isolate the virtual machine well from the internet in order to avoid DDoS attacks and stuff like that.

To improve, I feel the disk management is too basic. I can't easily partition the disk for the operating system. I have to follow the main configuration that is already set up in the template. 

To partition the disk, I would need to deploy the operating system first and then make changes, but it's not an ideal method. I would recommend improving the disk management.

I have been using it for the last one and a half years, I deployed some virtual machines in Linux, and it was pretty easy to use.

It is very stable, I would rate the stability a ten out of ten. I had no issue regarding stability at any time.

I haven't scaled yet, but I'm aware that there is the option to change the size of your virtual machine to a larger one. 

Scaling would require you to shut down the operating system, and then you can change the size with just a few clicks. After restarting, the machine is scaled to a higher level of sizing.

However, the scalability is not too good. I would rate it a seven out of ten because there are not too many options for sizing. So if we need to scale, we will have to move to a much bigger size than we are, and perhaps that will become more expensive than if we had more sizing options for our virtual machine.

As long as it's just for a database, there are not too many users, maybe only those two, me and the application manager.

Lightsail also offers options for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), so it could be used to connect people from an organization to work in VDI sessions. 

As far as I remember, Lightsail doesn't provide support. There wasn't any at the time I deployed. If there is now, I have never used the support.

I'm not a hard user in cloud, but I've used Lambda, API Gateway, AppRunner, and also Lightsail for deploying virtual machines, all in AWS. 

In Azure, mainly RDS databases like SQL Server, and the common virtual machine is for infrastructure as a service. 

For the platform as a service, we are just starting to have evaluations, and most of them were in AWS and involved AppRunner.

AppRunner from AWS is the service that I can use to run, for instance, an HTTP website. It will point the website in GitHub, for instance, to AppRunner, and it will deploy the website. It has embedded the runtime and all the libraries that are needed to deploy the website.

For web hosting, I have used AppRunner because I was trying to go in a serverless application, and AppRunner, at least for the application, was able to do everything in a serverless way. I only use it for the database because I had no option to select that database in an RDS instance. So I had to create the virtual machine and deploy the Neo4j database on them. But for application and web hosting purposes, I didn't use Lightsail.

The initial setup is very simple and straightforward.

Overall, I would rate my experience with the initial setup a nine out of ten, with ten being easy to set up. 

At this moment, we are still mainly on-premises. We have a proprietary data center, but we are gradually moving to the cloud to implement new and modern applications in the cloud. This is a long-term journey because we are in the industrial sector, which does not require scalability or elasticity.

So, it's common that we can support everything from our premises. However, to leverage some benefits from the cloud, for instance, this website that I'm probably sharing in AppRunner, is mainly for customers, not for internal purposes. When talking about external people accessing our website, it is much better to have it in the cloud than on our own premises.

I had help from a consultancy partner who was working with me on the project, but it was mainly dedicated to the database configuration itself because it's a very specific database. My experience with that was not too much, so it helped me to configure the Neo4j database.

It was a two-person team. It was me and one more person. And he was a database administrator. But he was also the architect of the solution itself, the application. So he was aware of how to configure this database to meet the demands of the application.

The deployment was two days, not more than that.

The deployment process was using the templates from Lightsail. And after that, I went to the Neo4j Installer and did the configuration for this database. It was very easy. To deploy was two days because one day to configure everything regarding the operating system and another day to configure the database.

One person is enough for the maintenance with Lightsail. That's enough because Lightsail itself is not a big deal in terms of management. It can provide everything you need in a few clicks and make everything easy.

The prices are better than EC2 machines, for instance, because they are simplified management, but it works well, and I am able to run everything that I need on it.

The flat-rate pricing model of Lightsail allows you to select the size of the virtual machine, and although there aren't too many options, at the time I chose there were about five sizes available. I selected a middle-size option, which costs around $20 a month. This is a very good price, especially for the US East region. 

For my budget, this was a suitable option because, in comparison, EC2 from AWS would have been much more expensive. 

Although EC2 offers a lot of additional benefits in terms of configuration, if I don't require those extra configurations and features for our environment, and I just need to deploy it with some protection from the internet, Lightsail works well.

I opted for Lightsail in comparison to EC2. 

It's mainly the management console. In Lightsail, it's very simplified. I have a lot of options to configure our virtual machine infrastructure as a service in EC2. 

Lightsail is more suitable if you have a fast need to have a virtual machine online for any simple purpose, making it a good starting point for users not familiar with configuring a virtual machine environment. 

Lightsail offers a good starting point for people. 

The price is the main attractive point. It is, in my opinion, much better than EC2 for virtual machines. So I, for sure, would recommend it.

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten. It's a very good solution.

We are a company based in Ireland, and we are AWS partners. We have built some solutions for AWS, and we have developed a WordPress plugin that we use to migrate websites from any hosting site to AWS. We specifically create Lightsail instances using that plugin. When the website is migrated, it is migrated to a Lightsail instance.

Using AWS SDK and integrating it with Laravel has simplified our process. We create Lightsail instances, S3 buckets, and other resources easily. The straightforward configuration of Lightsail allows us to guide our customers effectively.

The instances optimized for WordPress are very lightweight and straightforward in configuration. This ease of use benefits our users, especially those who need guidance. Lightsail makes it simpler compared to EC2, which requires more in-depth knowledge.

Backward compatibility and the flexibility to choose software versions while installing would be improvements. Currently, only the latest versions are available, which is good for security, however, having the ability to choose could be beneficial.

We face issues with scalability and stability, especially during brute-force attacks on WordPress sites. The instances might go down, so we sometimes move clients to EC2 for better stability.

Managing traffic and resource requirements can be challenging. During heavy traffic or brute force attacks, the instances might become unstable.

Our support team is quite good. We usually get a good response time. Being AWS partners may contribute to this quick and effective support.

From the cloud perspective, Lightsail is cheaper.

I would recommend Lightsail for lightweight websites, such as portfolios or small company service sites. For more demanding websites, Lightsail might not be sufficient due to scalability limitations.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

I use Amazon Lightsail when a client or company requests hosting for a WordPress website. It is suitable for LightSuite deployments and offers easy deployment of applications quickly.

I find Lightsail particularly valuable for hosting WordPress as it is easier to set up than a bare metal server, which requires extensive configuration and package installations. It automates the processes, making it quicker and more cost-effective.

The main area for improvement in Lightsail is the difficulty in scaling down resources. While it is easy to scale up, scaling down is not straightforward and involves additional complexities.

I have been using Lightsail for three years now.

Lightsail is very stable. I have used it for over a year with no issues, except those caused by my own configurations.

Scaling up with Lightsail is straightforward, but scaling down is challenging. It's something that AWS should improve for better usability.

I have not had the need to contact AWS support for Lightsail issues. I usually find answers to my questions online without needing to open a support ticket.

I have used Microsoft Azure on different projects primarily due to client requirements for better integration with Microsoft 365 for team collaboration.

The initial setup process for Lightsail was simple and straightforward, without any significant challenges.

Lightsail offers time savings because it simplifies deployment. It is also cost-effective as I can manage upfront monthly costs easily without unexpected charges.

Lightsail is available at an affordable cost starting from five dollars per month. This cost may increase with additional features like a static IP.

I have experience with Microsoft Azure.

I recommend Lightsail to developers looking for easy deployments, especially for WordPress. It saves time and money because of its simplified setup process. I rate Lightsail seven out of ten.

I am providing freelancer services and consultancy to multiple clients. I create environments and setups, including development and production lines, primarily using Amazon Lightsail for startup business scenarios. 

It is affordable, and we utilize services according to customer requirements, deploying solutions like websites and databases on a budget-friendly scale.

We opt for Lightsail since it's budget-friendly, starting at five dollars. Initial setups required by customers are inexpensive compared to other AWS instances. 

Implementations are completed with a few clicks, allowing efficient transitions to other development stages, and setup is easy whether for online support or basic business requirements.

It would be beneficial if Lightsail allowed easier upgrade and change processes, similar to EC2 instances, without needing to fully back up and reinstall configurations. Allowing users more flexibility with configurations would improve the service.

I've been using Amazon Lightsail for five years, starting in 2019.

The stability of AWS Lightsail is exceptional in comparison to other cloud providers like Microsoft. AWS offers a more reliable environment, although occasional downtimes can occur, but overall, I would rate it ten out of ten for its stability.

Amazon Lightsail's scalability is limited as it provides fixed services. If the initial requirements change, users cannot easily upgrade. This can be a drawback as users need to back up data and migrate to a new instance. This limitation makes it less flexible compared to EC2, which can be upgraded seamlessly.

AWS's technical support requires payment, sometimes finding answers in community forums and documentation suffices. Engaging AWS support for more challenging issues can be costly, thus often not pursued for freelance consultancy work unless necessary.

The initial setup of Amazon Lightsail is simple and quick, generally taking about three clicks to complete. It is intuitive for those familiar with AWS environments, making it straightforward even for users without extensive technical expertise.

Lightsail is cost-effective and offers predictable pricing. The affordability of starting at five dollars makes it an attractive option for startups and medium-sized companies, aligning with budget considerations while offering essential cloud services.

Overall, I rate Amazon Lightsail nine out of ten. It's a good solution, providing essential web services efficiently, especially for small to medium enterprises and startups. However, the upgrade process could be improved to offer better scaling options similar to other AWS services like EC2.

There is certainly room for improvement in Amazon Lightsail since it competes with services like Cloudways. While it offers a scaled-down version of what Amazon Web Services provides, such as EC2 and RDS, it still needs to be enhanced further. 

Another area of improvement is support. Currently, there is limited support available while installing or configuring it, and resources are primarily available through community-contributed articles. Therefore, there's a need for better support and documentation to make it even more helpful and user-friendly.

I just used it for testing some applications migrating from our existing cloud service provider, which is cloud-based. The websites were pretty much heavy. So we decided to try it out on Lightsail.

So, I used Amazon Lightsail for a few months.

It was pretty much stable. I would rate the stability a nine out of ten.

In terms of scalability, there are certain procedures that you need to follow, so it's not as easy as some other cloud-based solutions. It's not as hard either, but it requires a bit more effort than, say, Cloudways. 

I would rate scalability at seven out of ten compared to other cloud-based services, which score a ten in terms of scalability.

In my organization, three persons were using it, but I was the main lead. But it didn't prove to be that successful, so I didn't definitely continue using it.

It didn't prove to be that much helpful just to switch around from DigitalOcean to Amazon Lightsail. Because of this, what we were considering is the cost as well as the speed of the server, especially since the website is running under the server.

Moreover, there's an overhead cost in terms of setting up and running the server, which is higher when comparing DigitalOcean to Lightsail. It's not a direct comparison, but since with DigitalOcean, I'm using Cloudways as a majority between the two services, it's way easier to set up and manage. However, in the case of Lightsail, it's not that straightforward, although as our cloud developers, it was not that difficult either. Nevertheless, the performance didn't improve as much as we expected. So, we decided not to switch everything over to Lightsail.

The initial setup is pretty easy. I was able to pull it off in a few minutes.

It's very cheap. For the services it provides, it's even cheaper than DigitalOcean, I would say. It comes along with a free tier option for three months, so that's wonderful for any small business to even test their infrastructure.

First of all, I would definitely request everyone to be a little bit familiar with the terminologies that AWS is using because they are quite different from what other platforms use. So having a little bit of knowledge about load balancers and such would be helpful.

Moreover, one has to have good knowledge of Linux shell scripting because Amazon Lightsail doesn't provide any kind of user-friendly interface to upload files. There are a lot of restrictions while uploading files, so it can be a bit difficult. That's one thing to keep in mind.

Overall, I would rate this solution an eight out of ten. It still has some areas to improve, but overall, it's an eight.

Lightsail is easier to set up and prepare the environment for production and similar tasks. 

EC2 instances are pre-configured and upgraded, so you can simply select and instantly pay for an EC2 instance to set up WordPress, Node.js, or a server container using Docker. 

You can configure the server settings and network settings easily.

The solution could be smoother than it is.

I have been using Amazon Lightsail for two to three months.

Amazon Lightsail guarantees 99.9% uptime.

Twenty employees use this solution.

The initial setup is straightforward and takes five minutes to complete. Two cloud engineer can handle the deployment.

I rate the initial setup a ten out of ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

The tool works pretty well. The instance is working well, and the price is good. We can achieve scalability like AWS at a lower cost. We can accommodate more clients at a lower cost.

The product has a good price.

The user interface is good. I never encountered any problems or issues using the application.

I strongly recommend the solution.
