CEO and Founder at BAssure Solutions
Essential management tool; pricing can be tricky for smaller companies
Pros and Cons
- "The features I found most valuable are how the APIs are published, the whole process of finalizing the API, and then controlling it."
- "I'd like this solution to improve on releasing new features; I'd like it to be more frequent."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case for Apigee is as an API management tool. Our client has a fast platform and they want to go to the next level when it comes to customization. As they are looking to go beyond minimalistic customization, they need multiple versions of servers and several APIs. This was a challenge we solved with Apigee.
What is most valuable?
The features I found most valuable are how the APIs are published, the whole process of finalizing the API, and then controlling it.
What needs improvement?
I'd like this solution to improve on releasing new features; I'd like it to be more frequent.
In my opinion, I think that they should start thinking about improving the solution so that they can compete with open source. You get the support in the paid version, but open source features are being introduced much faster than Apigee's. New open source features come out every week.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the Apigee solution for about eight months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
My impression is that the stability of this solution is good. It's easy to use and stable. The releases take a long time. They do proper testing and introductions. But, when it comes to open source, they keep giving you more features.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the technical support of this solution an eight, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
My impression is that the initial setup is seamless. The deployment was done pretty quickly. Our model of deployment is the cloud, more specifically, AWS.
I think that the deployment and maintenance are done by a team of DevOps of six people.
What was our ROI?
Apigee as a management tool is essential and critical. There is no question when it comes to ROI because this is a mandatory spend from either a policy perspective or an invoicing perspective. When it comes to smaller companies, the pricing might be a bit of a concern.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The smaller companies have a more innovative pricing model, which is why I recommend Apigee when it comes to price. We have a monthly license. I usually work on onboarding the solution for a client for about six months and then I hand it over to them.
What other advice do I have?
We currently have only one customer with Apigee.
I would rate this solution as a whole an eight, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best.
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Manager, Delivery at Yael
Reliable, great for API management, and able to expand
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup isn't too complex."
- "Google isn't enthusiastic about supporting older versions. Google is now trying to move all of its clients to X within the cloud."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for API management. We use the solution with open banking, and we are managing our customer's cloud, on-premises, and Apigee environments.
What is most valuable?
The solution is great in general. There are many categories of APIs that need to be maintained. It helps maintain and add rules to manage open banking.
The solution is stable.
The initial setup isn't too complex.
It can expand well. Google seems to be moving into the cloud more than on-premises and the cloud makes scaling easier.
What needs improvement?
Apigee deals with APIs. However, most of our clients need more tailoring done to the solution.
Google isn't enthusiastic about supporting older versions. Google is now trying to move all of its clients to X within the cloud. However, some still want on-premises.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for about four years. I've used it for a while.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. However, it depends on the release, the customer, and the sophistication of the infrastructure.
We have had some issues with bugs in the product itself.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable.
We have three banking clients on the solution.
The amount of users depends on the customer. Some use it internally. Others expose the API to clients. Some have more than a billion APIs. Some have less.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is not the best. It does depend on the size of the customer. Larger customers tend to get more attention.
How was the initial setup?
The ease of setup depends on the level of sophistication of the clients. It can be rather simple; however, the more complex the infrastructure, the more difficult the setup can be.
We do both cloud and on-premises deployments. The length of deployment depends on the customer. It depends on the kind of network or the organization. It can take a few months up to a year.
We have a strong knowledge of the flow and the templates. For us, it's pretty straightforward.
There is a team of six people that can assist with deployment and consulting with clients.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are different models that customers can choose from. They have a subscription model.
What other advice do I have?
I'm a consultant.
We are using a few different versions of the solution.
I'd recommend the solution to others.
It'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Sales Manager at CNTXT
User-friendly with ability to convert from language to language; good security features
Pros and Cons
- "The ability to convert from language to language using a single tool."
- "Apigee lacks market presence."
What is our primary use case?
We are resellers of Apigee and also use it internally. The most common use case is monetization for the APIs. I'm the sales manager and we are resellers of Apigee.
What is most valuable?
The ability to convert from language to language using the same tool without needing different developer teams to deploy is a valuable feature. It doesn't require a lot of skill to run Apigee and the security features are good. This is a powerful tool for API management.
What needs improvement?
The only disadvantage with Apigee is that they lack market presence. I think they may have limited resources. IBM's strategy is stronger on the marketing level.
I believe they're working on adding some integration features that are currently lacking.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable even in very complicated environments.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable and it's great for enterprise companies.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is good. Google team has many teams can support it. And there is a lot of partners ecosystem who understand and implement and support strategy as well.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I previously worked with IBM Connect but I prefer Apigee. It provides all the features and requirements for AI management.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward and can be done by anyone.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The licensing cost is very reasonable and it gives you unlimited transactions.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend testing this solution for a month or so. It's easy to implement and easy to use. I rate the solution nine out of 10 - the one point reduction is because of the marketing strategy.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

AVP - Senior Enterprise Solutions Architect at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Top of the recommended reviews, highly experienced reviewer, with excellent technical support on known issues
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is monetization."
- "If customers are trying to do long-term planning, and want to apply monetization on their APIs, then Apigee will be the best in this situation."
- "I would like to see SOAP services and socket-based connectivity developed."
- "I would like to see SOAP services and socket-based connectivity developed."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is for security but also the mediation that goes with it.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is monetization.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see SOAP services and socket-based connectivity developed. Apigee is known for exposing the REST API but not the SOAP API. Our clients are requesting these two features and we do have a workaround we use, but an upgrade in these two areas would be great. I would like to see more integration for example Enterprise Service Bus and this will help Apigee gain more popularity.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Apigee for the past six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Apigee is a stable product. We have had existing customers for the past four or five years now.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is alright but I have mixed criticism. Sometimes you get answers very quickly and on time, but in some scenarios when there is a product issue it takes time. If there is anything that is not implemented and they need some time to implement it, then it takes them months. If the error is something that is a known issue they reply back quickly.
How was the initial setup?
Apigee is more straightforward and flexible, with implementation and designing. Other products currently on the market are more complex overall to sustain. The time it took us to set up was around two to three months.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
There is one main reason we went with Apigee and that is the importance of the Gartner and Forester ratings. Apigee is on top of all the Gartner and Forrester ratings. The other reason is because of the smooth operational perspective.
What other advice do I have?
If customers are trying to do long-term planning, and want to apply monetization on their APIs, then Apigee will be the best in this situation. I would rate Apigee a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Microsoft Azure

- "I have heard there maybe be some security issues that need to be addressed. If this is the situation I would encourage taking a look at the security matters."
What is our primary use case?
We want to sell API products and if you want to market the API product that you are building, then definitely you can go for the Apigee or any API product, but if you are in Google Cloud, definitely you can go for Apigee because only Apigee offers current cloud.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the API gateway.
What needs improvement?

We have seen a return on investment.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the solution a seven out of ten. The solution is good, but the account simplification process can be improved. I advise users considering this solution to go for it because it has many API management features, including the health log error-finding tool and developing a new proxy.
