We used Cisco Piston OpenStack for network services virtualization. With one click, we managed to deploy routers, switches, and the server with its service change tied to them. With one click, everything was automated.
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Cisco has a very wide network-based competency. They are one of the best solutions for network function virtualization. They know what they are doing when they partner with OpenStack on this.
What needs improvement?
Cisco Piston OpenStack needs to be more closely integrated between different solutions to work seamlessly for the client and the deployment team.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Cisco Piston OpenStack for three to four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Cisco Piston OpenStack a six to seven out of ten for stability because it has too many moving parts.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is very scalable. I rate Cisco Piston OpenStack a nine out of ten for scalability.
How are customer service and support?
Cisco Piston OpenStack's technical support is good. They have support teams across different time zones. Even if you have an issue at midnight, you feel comfortable and confident that their support team is around to support you.
How was the initial setup?
Cisco Piston OpenStack's initial setup is more complex than VMware, but it's still manageable overall.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the solution through a third-party consultant. Since the solution's deployment process has many moving parts, you have to plan for the integration to work better. Otherwise, there will be too many moving parts.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We pay a yearly licensing fee for the solution.
What other advice do I have?
I am using the Newton version of Cisco Piston OpenStack.
Users should have a very competent in-house team or a third-party team ready to support them because Cisco Piston OpenStack is not an easy solution. It's more complex than VMware.
Overall, I rate Cisco Piston OpenStack a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
