Optimized restaurant analytics has driven faster insights and streamlined daily reporting
Amazon Redshift offers massive parallel processing capability, allowing it to handle millions of records, along with integration with other AWS features such as S3 and QuickSight. The column-level storage supports high performance and easy data retrieval compared to other tools. The integration with S3 has helped my team immensely since S3 is our starting source, and the direct integration with Amazon Redshift simplifies the transformation and loading process. Columnar storage has benefited our performance significantly, allowing us to extract specific rows from tables with years of data much faster than other tools with row-level storage. Amazon Redshift has positively impacted our organization by significantly improving query performance and speed. Features such as easy integration with S3 allow us to process millions of records efficiently, ultimately saving us nearly one hour per day for our project.

Advanced features enhance business intelligence, but complex management calls for improved user guidance
While my experience with IBM Db2 Warehouse is somewhat limited, when compared to other databases such as Oracle, there are areas for improvement. They need to enhance the database to make it more user-friendly and easier to master. They should implement a more comprehensive graphical user interface with additional features. For instance, when users encounter problems, the system should provide better guidelines and troubleshooting directions, except for hardware-related issues. They need to implement tools that would help users perform basic troubleshooting rather than solely relying on support. Other databases have features where users can investigate specific issues using error codes. From my experience, many minor issues could be resolved before escalating to support.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Redshift has been the data warehouse in at least three of my previous companies."
"Redshift COPY command, because much of my work involved helping customers migrate large amounts of data into Redshift."
"The solution is scalable. It handles different loads very well."
"The most valuable feature of Amazon Redshift is its ability to handle really large sets of data."
"With Amazon Redshift, we gained a lot in terms of timing, as well as project completion."
"The seamless connection and good scalability on the cloud are valuable features of Amazon Redshift."
"We like that the solution is a scalable, column-store database."
"I like the cost-benefit ratio, meaning that it is as easy to use as it is powerful and well-performing."
"The solution works with big data, so it's pretty scalable."
"The most valuable features of IBM Db2 Warehouse include its availability, easy integration, ability to deal with a large size of data, excellent performance with no delays, powerful security mechanisms, and effective support."
"It can scale effectively as long as resources are available."
"It can be mounted on the cloud, which is a huge plus. If the client, for example, starts small with on-premise deployment and then it rapidly needs to grow, we can transfer this to the cloud easily."
"If you have good people designing how the data is stored, it's a marvelous tool."
"The analytics engine is not bad at forecasting predictions."
"The initial setup was really easy; it's Docker compliant, you just pull the image from the IBM repository and that's it, and the deployment must have taken less than an hour, making it really fast to have it completely working."
"The solution is stable."

Cons

"The OLAP slide and dice features need to be improved."
"Amazon Redshift does not work alone and requires integration with other AWS tools like S3 and Glue for a complete ecosystem."
"The initial deployment was complex."
"There is a need for improvement in these aspects, mainly in the scope of data types and some complex functionalities which we can perform in RDBMS."
"I rate their support seven out of ten. It's costly when you enable support. The price is high for technical support."
"It takes a lot of time to ingest and update the data."
"When working with third-party services requires additional integrations and configurations, which can sometimes add more cost."
"Redshift's GUI could be more user-friendly. It's easier to perform queries and all that stuff in Azure Synapse Analytics."
"There were some initial challenges with IBM Db2 Warehouse about eight months ago when I worked in this environment. When I coordinated with IBM support, they mentioned that the memory was insufficient for our needs. Our business environment required significantly more memory than the previous cluster could provide. Consequently, we have worked closely with on-site IBM technical personnel to address this issue."
"In terms of improvement, IBM Db2 Warehouse should be more scalable."
"The biggest problems we have is when the backup solution is failing or slow and we run out of log space, which has happened probably a couple of times in the last four years."
"IBM Db2 Warehouse needs to improve its interface."
"On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the technical support as a five. It is fairly bad."
"The areas of the solution that is needing the most improvement are separating compute from storage, elasticity, which means scaling up and then retracting."
"The biggest challenge anyone could have with Db2 Warehouse is their references or online resources and documentation. They are very, very, very limited on the web."
"There should be more material available for training and training should be free."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is cheap considering what it provides; I rate it five out of five for affordability."
"For Amazon Redshift, we pay around INR 60,000 annually. The cost factor also depends on the number of existing customers."
"It's around $200 US dollars. There are some data transfer costs but it's minimal, around $20."
"The cost will depend on how you set up your warehouse and what kind of data you store."
"Redshift is very cost effective for a cloud based solution if you need to scale it a lot. For smaller data sizes, I would think about using other products."
"The product is quite expensive."
"Amazon Redshift is an expensive solution. Larger organizations can afford this solution, but smaller businesses would struggle to afford it."
"In comparison to the price of similar solutions, Redshift's cost is the lowest."
"In a traditional on-prem database, in a data warehouse, the solution is probably on the expensive side."
