Have saved significant operational costs and streamlined alert-driven analytics with customizable dashboards
I definitely see some disadvantages in Apache Superset, particularly in the tagging feature which is not up to the mark, creating a little bit of mess for the administrators. We work with a Role-Based Access Control feature in the product. I assess this feature as good; they have permissions which are in more plain English, but there is a little bit of convenience missed out because if I have to create a super user apart from admin, I need to add all the permissions manually.

Unified log analytics has transformed security monitoring and cuts breach detection to minutes
Splunk Cloud Platform has areas for improvement, including the fact that it is obviously an enterprise tool and can be expensive, which is the biggest complaint I have noted. Costs can rise due to high data ingestion and long retention periods, along with a complex licensing structure that makes pricing difficult to predict as usage grows, especially since more systems send logs. There are also performance concerns at scale where users have reported slower searches and expensive long-term storage needs, particularly in multi-terabyte environments. Additionally, operational complexity exists as enterprises still need to do data onboarding, create dashboards, handle retention policies, access control, and performance tuning. These are the three key areas of improvement I have identified.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's very easy, reliable, and trustable because it's an Apache open-source product."
"When you click on any chart, you can apply the filter without any effort."
"The most valuable feature of Apache Superset is the easy way to configure dashboards as reports or analyses and it's easy to use and intuitive. Users do not need a lot of training to use the solution."
"I see savings from using Apache Superset in both time and money, particularly with the cost reduced by roughly 99% compared to Tableau where we previously paid almost 50k annually."
"The benefits I have seen from using Apache Superset for the business team are that they have been able to look at the numbers easily, log into the portal, and look at different dashboards, which are at different granularities."
"Being able to quickly build standard dashboards around relational data in Apache Superset provides tremendous visibility for everyone on the team."
"The solution supports a rich set of charts and enables users to create their own dashboards."
"The no-code interface is the most valuable as it allows us to operate without constant support from the data engineering team, fostering a self-service environment."
"Splunk Cloud Platform's search modes are a powerful feature."
"Splunk has sped up our response and reduced the time we spend manually monitoring any logs for ticketing tools or servers. It saves us around two hours daily."
"Operationally, Splunk Cloud Platform has provided wide observability where we had almost none before, significantly improving our security posture and our ability to defend the organization."
"Their promise to users is scalability and availability."
"Splunk Cloud Platform is highly scalable, and it is one of the best SIEM tools across the world because it is valuable not only for monitoring but also for security analysis, dashboards, and other features compared to other tools."
"Splunk Cloud Platform's search capabilities are quite effective in uncovering operational insights."
"Index manager is most valuable because we do not have to bother about internal storage. It is all managed by the Splunk team."
"Splunk Cloud Platform's ingest and visualization features have helped improve our data reporting, truly the best available in terms of customizability."

Cons

"Apache Superset could be improved by enhancing its interactivity and engagement capabilities."
"One potential area for improvement in Apache Superset is that it must be installed in a dedicated Docker image, which could be a limitation since the goal is to embed Apache Superset in a product offering."
"When comparing Apache Superset with Elasticsearch and Solar Search, it lacks some features that come with Elasticsearch, such as Kibana."
"The platform's reporting feature needs enhancement."
"I definitely see some disadvantages in Apache Superset, particularly in the tagging feature which is not up to the mark, creating a little bit of mess for the administrators."
"With Apache Superset, we had some problems with the permissions when we had too many users."
"Automation in terms of APIs for creating roles, and giving privileges to the user can be improved."
"Dark mode would be the main thing I would like; it does not really work because the chart text cannot be white in a dark mode setup, so it is not feasible."
"In Splunk Cloud Platform particularly, there is nothing specific that I would like to see improved or enhanced, but the cost is currently very high."
"It needs to mature; it's just getting established in the industry on a wider scale."
"Splunk Cloud Platform's user interface is quite simple and needs to be updated; it feels as if I am using a platform from two thousand fifteen."
"It would be nice to see more comparisons between Splunk and other log management tools. There are some legacy tools that people are often coming off. It will ease the transition if you are coming off a Windows LogViewer or any other logging tool. Splunk could offer more advice on how to transition into it or onboard it."
"Extracting meaningful insights beyond essential log data proves challenging due to the product's reliance on manual processes."
"I think the tool has some scalability issues, especially when used in larger organizations."
"Splunk currently manages the components, which restricts our ability to access them directly."
"First-time users may struggle with the user interface. When I first used Splunk, I entered my username and password. After that, we get a dashboard on the left side with apps. At the top, you can click the gear icon to view the settings. Within those settings, there's a distributed console option with several settings. It's a bit overwhelming for a beginner. The user knows what they want and can search for it in the search bar. If I see several apps, my first instinct is to scroll down to find the app, or perhaps you will find that search and report. That bugged me when I was learning."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Apache Superset is open-source and free."
"Apache Superset has a three-year licensing model."
"Apache Superset is an open-source solution."
"The price of Apache Superset is less than some of its competitors."
"There are additional features that you would need to purchase depending on your use case."
"We were on ingest. We were on-prem, and when we switched to the cloud, we went to an SVC model, and that has been a huge help. We are now able to ingest more data than before."
"I am familiar with the pricing and licensing model a little bit. I am not sure about the particulars of the actual price that we have, but I do like the idea of going towards a more CPU-based approach rather than the ingest approach because it allows us the ability to ingest more data if we need it."
"It was a good model."
"We were involved in the renewal process, and our organization does reviews of all our partnerships that we have every two to three years to ensure they are meeting our needs, there isn't a better solution out there, and we won't save money by going somewhere else."
"The Splunk Cloud Platform is expensive."
"Splunk Cloud Platform fell within our budget so we pulled the trigger and implemented it."
"I do not personally deal with that side, but from discussions, I know that it is one of the more expensive tools. I do not have anything to compare it with."
