Useful automation capabilities, scales well, and simple implementation
We are currently exploring automation options for various areas, and Avantra should consider implementing automation for change request management, an area they have not yet ventured into. While Avantra is currently excelling in monitoring and system refreshes, there is scope for improvement in automating change request management. In addition to primarily focusing on SAP, Avantra currently performs kernel patches which are core SAP patches. However, exploring more into OS patching could be another potential area for Avantra to expand its automation capabilities. Looking ahead to future releases, I would like to see more advanced automation features. As a long-term goal, I am considering the possibility of automating SAP system upgrades. While this would not be an easy feat, advancements in technology may make it feasible in the future. Overall, a key feature I hope to see in future releases is increased automation capabilities.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"You can customize alerts based on need."
"It's very easy to manage and use."
"It prevented two major failures in our SAP production systems."
"The most valuable feature of Avantra is automation. The reduction of manual work and having them automated is one of the top reasons why I would use it."
"I definitely recommend this solution, it provides good value for money."
"Deployment was amazingly short and simple; I do not think I have seen any SAP-related product installs ready to work so fast, and out-of-box it included most of the functions and settings that we needed."
"It's just very user-friendly, and it's very easy to monitor the servers using Avantra."
"The solution has a very good business event manager tool."
"I like everything about this tool. I recommend this solution to anyone looking for a standalone solution with high availability meaning that can be used depending on the customers requirements."
"I haven't seen a use case scenario with a customer that we couldn't actually solve the problem for, so it's really good."
"This is the best product so far I have ever experienced."
"It provides common administration, and a Single Sign-On Platform with RBAC, which eases the cross launch between multiple tools"
"The BMC TrueSight platform wins probably 80 percent of the time if you look feature by feature."
"Signature baselines, which have allowed us to fine tune many of our events and significantly reduce the number of events generated."
"The very fact that we've been on it for ten years is a testament, as we continue to make the investment and pay the renewal because the return has been fantastic."

Cons

"The dashboard needs to improve; it's not so clear right now and we need it to be more usable so we can have all of our reports in one easy-to-access place."
"The dashboard needs to improve."
"The machine-learning is lacking and should be improved."
"I think they can improve their UI, while very intuitive, I would like to see graphic updates."
"A downside of Avantra is that it comes with predefined values."

"The solution is based on endpoints and knowledge models which can get costly. Pricing is a little bit high so I rate it a six out of ten."
"The dashboards could be better. The graphs are extremely limited."
"I think the solution is overly complex and requires a lot of resources."
"I think the ease of deployment needs to be looked at. It would be great if the deployment was faster and easier."
"I would like them to improve the deep-dive details, tracing, and data agents in this product."
"The dashboard and performance graphs should include a way to automatically schedule and export reports."
"On Windows we went to application HA and, quite honestly, it was terrible."
"In a large company of our size, we need multiple people in our company trained. So, I have to take the training classes. Then, I have to go and train the rest of my organization. I would prefer to say to the other people on my team, "Go to this link and..." Or, "Here's a list of training sessions that you can go to which are online and that are free." I think it would help the adoption of their product in the marketplace, personally."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"We're end-of-lifeing it now. Overall, the licensing costs of BMC are a challenge for us in that they're hard costs, whereas open-source monitoring has soft costs, where it's harder to line-item."
"Annual licensing amount depends on the customers requirements. Support is an additional fee and there are options for three and five year support."
"The cost depends on the usage."
"Consider scalability very carefully: how much you want to monitor and what components are very important. Then, depending on these two things, filter out unwanted metrics or attributes. If you do a good job at filtering the data, then your licensing costs will be manageable."
"There is a big upfront cost when you buy the license, then there is annual maintenance. We look at, if I bought a license and paid for maintenance for five years, then average it out, what would be my monthly cost. We have had some of the competing tools come in around four dollars. This is coming in as a premium, which is why I don't have it deployed as I would like it. Therefore, we're in negotiations right now. If I can get it down to the four dollar range, I will triple my deployment in a year and a half."
"BMC TrueSight Operations Management is not on the cheaper side, but its pricing is on a case by case basis. Its licensing model is simple and based on the number of devices."
"Pricing is all volume-driven. I think we were paying between $80 and $85 per license. That's per unit, for a perpetual license. You pay it one time and then, every year, you pay 20 percent of that for annual maintenance and support. But now that we've grown, we've purchased tens of thousands of licenses and the cost per license has gone down to something like less than $30..."
"Use conservative figures. In terms of hardware, monitored servers and also effort. The product is not cheap. But as with other products, you get what you pay for."
