Streamlines governance and security management but requires effort in managing hidden costs
I believe AWS Control Tower could be improved. I compare it with Huawei Cloud's enterprise project, which is a similar concept but different implementation. In Huawei Cloud, you partition in one single account, but in AWS, you have to separate many accounts. You end up with maybe 20 or 30 accounts if you try to separate. It has limitations; you pay a fixed amount for 15 accounts, but if you exceed that, you have to pay more. It could be useful for implementing a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCOE) for multiple organizations, but for one organization, I would advise against it; it is too much overhead and adds hidden costs. There are limitations on the Landing Zone feature as well. If we implement AWS Control Tower, we need to implement Landing Zone and the security policy, guardrails, and Account Factory; it is not one single product. Using another cloud's enterprise project, you can just create the project and manage it already. It requires some learning curve to get hands-on. For pricing and licensing of AWS Control Tower, it has hidden costs. The Control Tower itself does not cost much, but the child accounts created from AWS Control Tower add costs for checking all configurations, logging, and metrics.

Helps design blueprints in a cloud environment but the support is a major problem
One of the major problems is that support is not so good. I used to have a support expert in Spain but they left two years ago. BMC doesn't invest a lot in network automation but network automation is a major point in CLM. There aren't any experts here in Europe, maybe they have in America, I don't know. The main problem is the support in Europe. We had a lot of problems with the people who got put on our cases. The agents that we were assigned to were not so capable. They wanted to replicate the problem. If you have an incident, it takes a lot of time to troubleshoot the problem. The incident support is not so good. The technicians don't know the platform well. BMC doesn't want to invest in CLM. Two years ago we had a lot of problems. Maybe BMC realized that CLM is an end of life product.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There are two features in Control Tower which are the most valuable. One is the guardrails because it has preventive and detective guardrails."
"I would rate the solution a 10 out of 10."
"The most intriguing feature is the automatic generation of user accounts. Leveraging Active Directory and global company settings, AWS Cloud Tower enables the creation of AWS user accounts based on job descriptions in Active Directory. This establishes a direct correlation between the user's name, job definition, and the corresponding rules applied to each account."
"It offers automated recommendations for security and policies, creating a landing zone and providing a list of policies."
"Security is the most valuable feature of Control Tower."
"AWS Control Tower helps to save a lot of work and manage multiple accounts."
"AWS Control Tower helps companies save costs."
"Control Tower offers many valuable features for managing all account security."
"Assesses change impact or completes an audit using multiple dashboard views."
"You can tie together your public and private cloud infrastructure into a "single pane of glass"."
"It's helped us with our automation."
"CLM has a multi-cloud portal because they have the resources to implement in various environments in various ports."
"By allowing end users to request their own services, the request process for systems is much quicker and more accurate."
"Integrates role-based access control with pre-configured policies for CIS, DISA, HIPAA, PCI, SOX, NIST, and SCAP documentation and remediation."
"CLM has a multi-cloud portal because they have the resources to implement in various environments in various ports."
"Automates Java EE Application Deployment from an SCM system."

Cons

"The process of closing an AWS account using Control Tower needs improvements to simplify it, especially when managing multiple accounts."
"There aren't any additional features that I feel are missing. However, it's worth noting that Control Tower seems to function as a layer utilizing standard AWS products in the background. Occasionally, the interface may appear less streamlined, with changes in layout based on the underlying products being used. While this doesn't impact functionality, having a more standardized user interface, irrespective of the background products, could enhance the user experience."
"While using the solution recently, it broke a certain activity. So, AWS Control Tower needs to consider making the solution better."
"There should be more automation security tools in the Control Tower."
"It would be beneficial if AWS offered the capability to seamlessly deploy your infrastructure to another region to ensure continuous availability and redundancy."
"AWS should provide more resources, examples, and tutorials."
"It could be improved by having a more intuitive graphical interface. It could also include other coding languages like PowerShell and Python, as it would be beneficial for DevOps recommendations."
"The sole drawback is its restriction to enable only one Control Tower."
"It was complex as it does not include a good, extensive feasibility and compatibility guide."
"Needs integrations with other providers to provide a custom public cloud environment."
"One of the major problems is that support is not so good."
"The installation and configuration can be tricky due to it being built on Remedy."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AWS Control Tower is not really that expensive."
"The pay-as-you-go model ensures you're only charged for what you use, which offers great flexibility for different types of companies."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is a low price and ten is a high price, I rate the pricing an eight."
"The pricing is efficient, not overly expensive but also not very cheap."
"The product's affordability depends on the value it brings to specific organizations."
"The pricing structure is closely intertwined with the specifics of your environment and the billing strategy you employ."
"It operates on a pay-as-you-go model, meaning we are charged only for the services we actively use within it."
"It is expensive but it is an investment in my opinion."
