Saves time during workload migration, facilitates sizing of virtual servers, and the support team is helpful
The right-sizing feature is the most captivating one for us. It helped in taking the emotions out of what people think they need, basing it off of real data, and providing them what they actually need. It's not really a special feature, but the support that we received from that team really helped us in our success. There were definitely some customizations that needed to take place to make it successful. This is the most aware of our products, in terms of understanding all of the components from the top down. It is integrated with all of the different modules, all the way down to the core infrastructure. All of it is tied together and there are not many tools that can do that.

Easy to use and provides in-depth information in one place
I would like to see the forecasting models improved with AWS Cost Management. There is too much of a gap between what AWS forecasts and the actual bills we are charged. It is a machine learning system and relies on more data being collected over time. However, so far, we have not seen that.

Easy to use solution and the setup is straightforward, but the stability needs to be improved
I am also using Amazon and when I compare it, it requires a bit more stability. Amazon Cloud Services are a bit more stabilizing, at least with basic computing. Amazon by default is SSD only. When you create an instance in Google, by default it allocates to the disk and there are some performance issues. When you compare it with Amazon, the performance is a bit slow. In the next release, I would like to see the issue with the stability resolved. I have not faced any issues with freezing or hanging when using Amazon.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The tool provides the ability to look at the consumption utilization over a period of time and determine if we need to change that resource allocation based on the actual workload consumption, as opposed to how IT has configured it. Therefore, we have come to realize that a lot of our workloads are overprovisioned, and we are spending more money in the public cloud than we need to."
"The most valuable features are the cluster utilization reports and the resource capacity planning. We can simulate how much capacity we can add to the current resources. The individual DM reports and VM-facing recommendations report are also helpful."
"The system automatically sizes and moves resources based on the needs of the applications."
"I like Turbonomic's built-in reporting. It provides a ton of information out of the box, so I don't have to build panels for the monthly summaries and other reports I need to present to management. We get better performance and bottleneck reporting from this than we do from our older EMC software."
"My favorite part of the solution is the automation scheduling. Being able to choose when actions happen, and how they happen..."
"I only deal with the infrastructure side, so I really couldn't speak to more than load balancing as the most valuable feature for me. It provides specific actions that prevent resource starvation. It always keeps things in perfect balance."
"We have seen a 30% performance improvement overall."
"The feature for optimizing VMs is the most valuable because a number of the agencies have workloads or VMs that are not really being used. Turbonomic enables us to say, 'If you combine these, or if you decide to go with a reserve instance, you will save this much.'"
"The initial setup wasn't complex at all."
"The product provides the ability to set cost limits and budgets for a set of resources on the network."
"I like the recommendation we get from AWS Cost Management to use a particular image or VM type."
"AWS Cost Management is good for providing in-depth information in one place."
"The tool's cost management feature provides a comprehensive view of AWS costs, allowing us to plan and make cost-effective decisions. With AWS Cost Explorer, we can perform cost planning, generate recommendations, and provide clients with suggestions for resizing. This feature includes data filtering and protection, offering users insights into spending patterns through AWS spending patterns and planning tools. The product is easy to learn."
"With the cost management tool, clients can optimize fine tuning their consumption."
"The stability and scalability are good."
"The budgeting tool of AWS Cost Management is the most valuable feature."
"What I like most about this solution is that it's easy."
"It is a stable product."
"We use Google Cloud Billing to pay for or renew the license of our Google Workspace products."

Cons

"The automation area could be improved, and the generic reports are poor. We want more details in the analysis report from the application layer. The reports from the infrastructure layer are satisfactory, but Turbonomic won't provide much information if we dig down further than the application layer."
"After running this solution in production for a year, we may want a more granular approach to how we utilize the product because we are planning to use some of its metrics to feed into our financial system."
"The way it handles updates needs to be improved."
"Before IBM bought it, the support was fantastic. After IBM bought it, the support became very disappointing."
"They have a long road map when we ask for certain things that will make the product better. It takes time, but that's understandable because there are other things that are higher on the priority list."
"In Azure, it's not what you're using. You purchase the whole 8 TB disk and you pay for it. It doesn't matter how much you're using. So something that I've asked for from Turbonomic is recommendations based on disk utilization. In the example of the 8 TB disk where only 200 GBs are being used, based on the history, there should be a recommendation like, "You can safely use a 500 GB disk." That would create a lot of savings."
"Turbonomic doesn't do storage placement how I would prefer. We use multiple shared storage volumes on VMware, so I don't have one big disk. I have lots of disks that I can place VMs on, and that consumes IOPS from the disk subsystem. We were getting recommendations to provision a new volume."
"The planning and costing areas could be a little bit more detailed. When you have more than 2,000 machines, the reports don't work properly. They need to fix it so that the reports work when you use that many virtual machines."
"We need finer-grained control over the roles and policies for users, specifying their permissions as to what they can look at."
"This program is not very scalable."
"Data transfer between S3 buckets within AWS incurs costs, especially when moving data from one bucket to another or downloading data."
"I would like to see the forecasting models improved with AWS Cost Management."
"There could be an option to build custom dashboards for the platform."
"The solution needs to have its own dashboard for seeing details on it. It should be customizable as well so I have the ability to pull up the information I need to see and have it in one place for my reference. I should just be able to click and see everything I need in one step."
"AWS could improve the compatibility with other products."
"The solution needs to improve the communication mechanism available to the stakeholders."
"Google Cloud Billing should have a more user-friendly interface."
"At times you will find that the computer engines are freezing or it's about to freeze without any notification or information and it's unable to diagnose where it is hung."
"When I want to analyze the information, it would be better, since Google knows what I have used, to only show those items for analysis purposes."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When we have expanded our licensing, it has always been easy to make an ROI-based decision. So, it's reasonably priced. We would like to have it cheaper, but we get more benefit from it than we pay for it. At the end of the day, that's all you can hope for."
"What I can advise is to trial the product, taking advantage of the Turbonomic pre-sales implemention support and kickstart training."
"It is an endpoint type license, which is fine. It is not overly expensive."
"The product is fairly priced right now. Given its capabilities, it is excellently priced. We think that the product will become self-funding because we will be able to maximize our resources, which will help us from a capacity perspective. That should save us money in the long run."
"I'm not involved in any of the billing, but my understanding is that is fairly expensive."
"You should understand the cost of your physical servers and how much time and money you are spending year over year on expanding your virtual farm."
"Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
"Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
"We have signed a long-term contract with AWS. There are different service levels that will determine the level of support you have."
"The tool's pricing depends on our services."
"We get AWS Cost Management for free because we use AWS services."
"AWS Cost Management is free to use."
"The product is affordable."
"The licensing fees are monthly and cost approximately $100.00."
