Has improved performance for mission-critical workloads and enabled seamless non-disruptive upgrades
The availability is 99.99%, which is the main factor any customer would need because their data should be available whenever they want to access it. This is one main critical thing. It is very easy to upgrade since Pure Storage FlashArray handles it well. Everything is non-disruptive now; previously, there were forklift shifts, but now that is not the case. Pure Storage FlashArray says no to forklift upgrades. Usually hardware requires downtime, but Pure Storage FlashArray has improved their footprint so that they are not asking for downtime; everything is just a non-disruptive activity, which is why customers are more inclined towards Pure Storage FlashArray. Customers want more of the models in their environment due to the performance they are giving, and everything is in one Pure1 Array console where we can view all the models on one page or just an orchestration tool. You don't miss anything; you have replication, notifications about replication, and details about which host groups replication is happening in and if that replication is successful or failed. On a daily basis, our purpose is to create volumes for infrastructure; our daily activities include creating volumes and mapping them to the host, doing any migrations from a VM, clearing the data stores, and carving the volumes to those VMs. One key factor is the data compression with a ratio of 5:1, focusing on space efficiency, inline deduplication, and the compression Pure Storage FlashArray works on; that is a major factor we can suggest to any customer. Analytical capabilities are crucial. Daily, we check the throughput and consumption, and Pure Storage FlashArray provides predictions for one year regarding usage. This prediction helps plan updates well ahead. For support, we just raise a case, and they follow up and get it done. There is also AI readiness, but with the model R2, we don't have much of that AI readiness. For others, we do have AI readiness that predicts capacity based on daily or monthly trends, enabling us to analyze how much space we need or if we need to expand the disk shelf. From an operational point of view, a good feature is that if you accidentally delete a volume, it will be retained in the destroyed state for the next twenty-four hours, which is not the same with any other vendor. I have worked in this storage domain for the past fifteen years, and this option is remarkable, benefiting any L1 or L2 engineer. Additionally, from a compliance perspective, Pure Storage FlashArray has REST APIs enabled. I have not explored automation much, but from a security standpoint, it is strong with encryption data. If you want to automate, you can easily integrate with all clouds and explore Pure Cloud for scheduling workloads, including volume creation. Customers find benefit in Pure Storage FlashArray's single management pane of glass due to the dual controller and active-active setup. If one of the controllers goes down, all workloads automatically shift to the other controller, ensuring their data is safe and accessible at all times. This is a highlighted feature that any customer desires because their data should always be accessible. For SAN workloads, we use Pure Storage FlashArray because for SAN FC fiber channel, we don't use it; we use NetApp for NAS activities. We have clearly split this, so SAN is for mission-critical applications, while network-attached storage handles file systems. This architecture helps us maximize the benefit from Pure Storage FlashArray due to the significant workloads from this giant retail client. From a footprint and energy consumption perspective, you can see energy consumption from the Pure1 storage portal on a daily basis, and it is very compact. The three models we use consume only three units, which is quite low. From a footprint and data center perspective, it doesn't occupy much space. As everything moves to cloud, there are requirements to avoid excess spending on data centers, and Pure Storage FlashArray is efficient in energy consumption and is environmentally friendly.

Migration has become seamless and cost tracking is simplified for hybrid file workloads
I think if Azure Files could integrate migration using Storage Mover, that would be an improvement. I don't think they have an option currently. Storage Mover only has an option to migrate blob storage or cold storage from one subscription to another subscription or from one tenant to another tenant. You only have options to migrate blob storage. For Azure Files, that is an SMB transfer, so you need to use AZCopy for that. If there is a migration where you want to migrate your blob storage from one subscription to another or from one tenant to another, you have the Storage Mover option where you can easily migrate blob storage. However, Storage Mover does not support Azure Files.

OpEx storage model has simplified SLAs, capacity planning, and cyber‑resilient recovery
The most valuable features in Pure Storage Evergreen One are the SLAs, which are tied to the kind of services that we are going to run. These SLAs govern the consumption and the reporting as well. I find it more attractive when we are tied to a specific SLA, and the VRA is providing the services within that agreed SLA, then there is no requirement for a complete capacity assessment. The entire capacity review, assessment, and recommendations come as part of Pure Storage Evergreen One solution. Pure Storage Evergreen One has a list of services which will provide the services, including cyber resilience. First, they have complete capacity management which is done by them and which will also provide us a heads up on how we are consuming the services and where these services can be improved. Second, it will also provide us some of the key attributes, such as we can take the snapshots and LUN snapshots, which will provide a cyber-resilient copy where data can be secured in case of a cyber attack. We have an option to basically recover the earliest. Third, because of this feature and because of Pure Storage Evergreen One, I am talking about the Evergreen aspect. Because of Evergreen, we also have an option to upgrade the controllers based on the SLAs. If the agreed SLAs are not meeting the requirement, we have a provision to upgrade the controllers and so on. This is giving a good feature for us to evaluate and provide a valuable proposition to the customer who wants to use Pure Storage as a Pure OpEx model.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is easy to deploy and it's all-flash, so it's very fast."
"The most valuable features are extremely low latency, high IOPS with VMware, inline deduplication and compression."
"After the implementation, the time to run the process was reduced to minutes and it did not require any manual intervention from our DBAs."
"Pure Storage technology allowed us to automate tasks, reducing something which started as a 12-hour turnaround down to about 15 minutes."
"It reduces space and the polar consumption. It also accelerates the application."
"We currently have four Pure Storage FlashArray boxes, and all the storage boxes are on an Evergreen subscription model where we receive the latest hardware and features without any cost in a completely non-intrusive task."
"The most valuable features are extremely low latency, high IOPS with VMware, inline deduplication and compression."
"It has a small footprint, as the current system is only four units per rack, it's got good speed for the price as it uses eMLC, an advanced type of SSD, and it's very scalable, and we're not paying for capacity as we get free controllers every three years."
"If we need to migrate data, Azure Files allows a seamless data migration."
"The speed of the product is quite a bit better in performance than the previous environment we were running on, and it seems to have a better feature set."
"The speed of the product is quite a bit better in performance than the previous peer environment we were running on, and it seems to have a better feature set."
"The Evergreen program is excellent, and the pricing is quite reasonable. My friends who work there are doing very well and consistently achieving strong results. Like any company, they experience occasional downturns but perform impressively overall."
"Pure Storage has the highest Net Promoter Score in the market."
"We have snapshots. We put snapshots on disks, and we can save information. In the case of ransomware, everything is in the snapshot. We have a snapshot lock on it, so it's safe."
"The most valuable features in Pure Storage Evergreen One are the SLAs, which are tied to the kind of services that we are going to run, and these SLAs govern the consumption and the reporting as well."

Cons

"With the introduction of Albireo technology and 81x data de-duplication reduction, Pure Storage better start looking at more effective de-duplication techniques."
"We did have one hiccup with the integration of vCenter. When we were installing Pure Storage, we were using vCenter 6.7, which defaults to the HTML5 Web Client. The current plugin for Pure Storage doesn't show up in that client at all. You have to go and use the legacy FlexFlash client to see the Pure Storage plugin in vCenter."
"In Pure Storage FlashArray, the area with room for improvement is local MFA login."
"They have a product, FlashBlade, which is their object storage integration, and that's something that we haven't integrated with yet. This might be an area for additional focus as it would play into scalability, because the very nature of object storage is that it's infinitely scalable."
"Automation could be simplified."
"Regarding documentation, it would be helpful if we could have access to the root passwords for administrative tasks."
"Reports of performance and LUN utilization could be improved."
"The problem is that we can only make a few groups, around five or six groups. I like groups and we need a lot of them. We had to put all the information in only a few groups and cannot make a more detailed separation of them."
"I think if Azure Files could integrate migration using Storage Mover, that would be an improvement."
"I'm not sure if any improvements are needed."
"I would love to explore more options on what Pure Storage Evergreen One can offer in general, mostly from the cybersecurity perspective and air gap."
"It would be nice to have support in Swedish."
"To me, I think it's a little expensive. Then again, you get what you pay for."
"Many customers report that the starting price is quite high. However, the overall total cost of ownership can be reduced over time due to features like the Evergreen architecture, which allows savings through less management and environmental benefits."
"The only potential drawback is that Pure Storage might be overkill if you don't need microsecond response times."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pure Storage FlashArray's pricing is very competitive."
"Its price is almost double than any other flash storage solution."
"It's expensive, but you get what you pay for."
"Our licensing is on a yearly basis. So, every year, we renew. We could do a three-year contract, but right now, we only do a one-year."
"We have a seen a reduction in TCO. It is definitely a cost-effective solution for us. We have seen ROI."
"We evaluated Oracle and Hitachi, but Pure Storage had the better pricing."
"The price of the solution can be a bit expensive. There is an additional fee for support."
"There is an annual or perpetual license required for this solution."
